CHAPTER 8

Nakatanaw si Secretary Santos sa labas ng bintana ng conference room. Bahagyang nakabukas ang kurtina sa ilang bahagi. Mula sa palapag na iyon ay tanaw niya ang makulimlim na lungsod. Habang humihigop ng kape ay hawak niya sa isang kamay ang diyaryong may headline tungkol sa mga madalas na paglindol.

Ayon sa PHIVOLCS, maaaring hinog na nga ang West Valley Fault kaya naman ay madalas na ang pag-uga ng lupa, ang huli ay ang magnitude 5.5 na lindol na ang sentro ay sa Marikina.

Ilang sandali pa ay may binulong ang sekretarya ng kalihim sa kanya. Pumasok na ang mga Amerikanong nakapormal na suot at binati ang Secretary of National Defense ng bansa. Nakipagkamay ang kalihim sa mga ito.

"What an unfortunate time it is for you to visit. We usually have good, sunny weather in April, but it has been raining on and off for weeks now," nakangiting saad ng kalihim sa Pinoy na accent nito.

Inabot ng kalahating oras ang small talk sa pagitan ng kalihim at ng mga CIA agents hanggang sa dumako ang usapan sa totoong paksa ng pagkikitang iyon. Tinulak ng isa sa mga bisita ang dalawang folders. Nang buksan ito ng kalihim ay naglalaman ito ng mga larawan ng delubyo sa Makati mahigit isang taon na ang nakakalipas. Ang isang folder ay naglalaman ng mga impormasyon tungkol sa malawakang power outage sa Metro Manila noong February 10, 2015.

"As you may have heard earlier, we have been conducting covert operations to investigate on what we first thought were terrorist activities," saad ni Andrea Moss, ang Director of the National Clandestine Service ng CIA. "But the data we've gathered points us in a rather interesting direction. We're probably dealing with a different type of global threat, Mr. Secretary."

"What do you mean?" Sandaling sumulyap si Secretary Santos kay Andrea Moss at binalik ang titig sa mga litratong hawak.

"Agent Todd here" -- nilapat ni Director Moss ang palad sa balikat ng kasamang Amerikano -- "captured those photos while taking shelter inside a building when two freak tornadoes ravaged one of your major cities."

"Nothing seems peculiar here," saad ng kalihim na mas sinuri pa ang mga larawan gamit ang kanyang salamin. "These look like victims."

"Look at the other pictures. The blinding light. That dark sphere right there." Tinuro ni Andrea ang isang larawan kung saan ang may namuong itim na bilog sa taas ng isang babae.

"These could be due to camera glitches." Kunot-noong sinusuri ng kalihim ang mga litratong pinakita niya rin sa mga heneral sa kasama sa pagtitipong iyon.

"The pictures were sent to the lab for examination. Turns out they're not tampered with. Phone" -- inangat nito ang telepono -- "takes pictures just fine. Besides, I saw what happened myself," saad ni Todd. "So did hundreds of witnesses."

"Secretary Santos," saad ni Andrea Moss, "we have a reason to believe that these people hold some sort of technology or special devices that are dangerous."

"What are you trying to say?" nakasimangot na tanong ng kalihim.

"It's for the best interests of our countries."

"Are you saying that we seize these people and turn them over to you?" May bahid ng inis ang tono ng boses ng kalihim.

"If you don't do it, we will. Right now, we already know where the two subjects are. One is already under our care. The other is still out there, but we've located him." Ngumiti ang babaeng director.

"Why meet with us if you've made a decision already?" Binagsak ng kalihim ang mga dokumento sa mesa.

"We thought it was a gesture of courtesy to let you know," mahinahong tugon ni Director Moss.

"Sir, these people we're talking about could put your people in danger. We have to make sure that whatever biotech they have is safe. If not, then we'll have to take it out of them." Tumayo si Agent Todd Watkins at kinuha ang nagkalat na mga dokumento sa mesa.

"But you're not even sure what those pictures tell," protesta ng kalihim.

"That's why we need to study them," tugon ni Director Moss. "Don't worry. The operations are as covert as they can get. No one will know, except us here of course."

"This is ridiculous!" bulalas ng kalihim.

"I know, Mr. Secretary," saad ni Andrea. "We have to go."

Naiwan ang kalihim na tulala sa mga narinig habang pinagmasdan ang pag-alis ng mga Amerikano.

"Sir," saad ng isa sa mga heneral na tumayo, "what do we do?"

"Mahirap ang sitwasyong ito," saad ng kalihim na diniin ang mga palad sa mesa. "We have no choice but to let them do what they want to do. Mahirap kalaban ang Amerika."

Nagtinginan ang mga heneral habang ang kalihim ay tahimik na nakatulala at nag-iisip.
