Laila groaned as she slowly sat up, this time not bothering to look around for what had woken her. She groggily made her way to the bathroom, doing her best to drown out Jace’s blaring music as she showered and brushed her teeth. She threw her hair in a high ponytail and hastily applied makeup before going back to her room and pulling her closet door open. She pulled on a short white pair of shorts and a fitted black tee that read ‘drama queen’ in white letters. It stopped just below her bellybutton, exposing just enough stomach to be noticeable but at the same time not enough to be skankish. She pulled on black and white striped socks that reached knees, followed by black converse. She grimaced at the screaming music coming from next door before snatching up her bag and walking downstairs.

“Bye mom!” She shouted. Her mom didn’t have work on Wednesdays, hence why she wasn’t already up and making coffee.

“Bye Laily.” Was the groggy response that came, causing Laila to quietly laugh to herself.

She grabbed an apple and a bottle of water from the kitchen before heading out the door. She stood near the curb, staring at nothing in particular as she waited for Caleb. He probably wouldn’t be there for another five minutes, seeing as she was actually early for once. She bit into her apple and dropped her bag on the cement at her feet. She jumped as a door slammed and footsteps approached her. She turned, grimacing when she saw who it was.

“What do you want?” She asked, eyeing Jace suspiciously as he came to a stop beside her.

“Nothing. Just waiting for my ride.” His tone was monotonous just like every other time he spoke to her.

“Why aren’t you driving?” She demanded, hoping to god his ride wasn’t who she thought it was.

“I don’t have a license.” Was the simple response. She stared at him, confused.

“And since when do you follow laws?”

“I don’t. But its kinda hard when you have no keys.” He shot a glare over his shoulder at Rose’s house, causing Laila to giggle.

“You got your car taken away,” She teased, finding humor in the foul look he gave  her. “Are you grounded?”

“No.” He snapped. He shifted his backpack on the one shoulder it was slung over. “Are you?” He shot back.

“That makes no sense. I didn’t do anything.” She pointed out. He ignored her, causing her to sigh in annoyance. “Lemme guess, you’re riding with Caleb.” Again, he ignored her. “How did you even ask him? Are you guys even friends?”

“I like him better than you or that annoying girl you’re always with.”

“Her names Amanda.” Laila corrected, not even bothering to take offense. She expected nothing more than blatant insults from him at this point.

“I don’t care. Can you tell her to stop staring at me? It’s getting weird.”

Laila couldn’t help but laugh. “So you’ve noticed?”

He shot her an incredulous look, causing her to laugh even harder. “Shut the fuck up, its not funny. And yes, I’ve noticed.” He snapped, glaring at her as she continued to laugh. “I’m not blind.” He grumbled. He finally gave up on trying to shut her up and waited until her laughter died down.

“Okay, yeah I’ll tell her.” She paused to collect herself. “Wait, how did you even ask Caleb if you can ride with us?”

“I didn’t.”

“So you’re just gonna hop in the car?” She asked, her voice filled with sarcasm. He gave her a bland look, back to ignoring her. She rolled her eyes and took another bite of her apple. They waited in silence until Caleb’s car came around the corner. She picked up her bag and slung it over her shoulder. Caleb’s eyes were wide as he pulled up beside them, and she couldn’t help but grin.
