Chapter 43 : In Charge

The whole pack had gathered in the living room and the air felt thick with how tense everyone was.

''Our backs are against the wall. War is coming to us and we have some tough decisions to make... but all of you still have a choice...'' Yuki said, breaking the heavy silence. ''This pack is not linked by blood or by an alpha. If you so wished, you could get a plane ticket and flee the country. There would be no way to trace you back to me or this pack.'' The girl elaborated.

''What are you-'' Jimin started before Jin interrupted him with a hand on his shoulder.

''If you do decide to stay in this pack, we will have to prepare for war. This would mean giving up on the pack as it is today. For survival's sake, we would need to choose two alphas, which you must know, means giving two of us the power to dominate the minds of the others. Even then, all of our lives would be in jeopardy and we would probably be fighting a loosing battle. This is the choice you have to make today. Leave without looking back and live a long life, or stay and risk everything...'' Yuki said, a lump in her throat, knowing the impossible choice she had put before everyone in the room.

''I'm not going anywhere. I'll protect our family, no matter what.'' Hoseok said, his expression more serious than ever.

''You kids wouldn't last a day without me, I'll stay and keep everybody fed and healthy.'' Jin said, serious at first but ending his sentence with a corner smile.

''I haven't spend my life researching about our kind to turn away the moment my knowledge is finally about to come in handy.'' Namjoon said with a sly smile.

''I'm staying too. If someone wants to mess with you they'll have to get through me first!'' Jimin exclaimed also.

''We're stronger together. It won't be easy, but we can take them down. I'm not leaving.'' Jungkook said with resolve.

''I'm not about to run away like some coward. We'll make them regret ever messing with us!'' Tae added proudly.

A second of silence passed and slowly the pack's eyes turned to Yoongi, the only one who hadn't spoken yet.

''You all know I despise the idea of having an alpha in this pack... It would change everything between us all...'' Yoongi said, great concern in his eyes.

''Things are never going to be the same, no matter if we chose an alpha or not... but I will stay too, under one condition.'' He continued.

''What condition?'' Namjoon asked, puzzled.

''I want Yu to be our alpha.'' Yoongi said before turning towards a shocked Yu.

She had always thought he secretly hated her, or perhaps barely tolerated her. Yet, at this moment, he was willing to gift his life and free will to her.

''Does anybody have an objection to that?'' Hoseok asked.

Nobody spoke and a couple of the boys shook their heads no with a smile, the only person who didn't seem happy with the idea was Namjoon who wore a bothered expression for a moment.

''Then it's decided. Yuki will be our alpha.'' Namjoon concluded back to his usual demeanor.

The boys were busy researching the ritual to instate Yu as their alpha, but the girl couldn't help but feel reluctant at the idea. She knew that one way or another she might have ended up in this position, but she already feared the burden of being responsible to take decisions in the name of the pack...

Starting from now, a mistake on her part could spell death for the seven others.

Unfortunately for her, the new moon, the perfect moon phase at which to perform the ritual, was merely a couple of days away. This was happening way too fast for her, but time was of the essence so she could do nothing but help along with the preparations.

''Are you sure you don't know anything more about this ritual?'' Namjoon asked Yuki for the hundredth time.

''This never happens, usually the alpha gets killed and the winner takes over the pack. It's quite rare for new packs to emerge... I'm pretty sure the ritual is half tradition, half actual stuff you need to do, but I don't know which half is which...'' Yu admitted.

''This is no good... No matter how many times I re-read these damn books, I feel like I'm solving a puzzle with a bunch of missing pieces. No offence, you do know a bunch of stuff that wasn't written in these books, but the more you tell me, the more I feel we're missing somethings... All of this history has to be written down somewhere...'' Namjoon said, rubbing his forehead.

''Wolves aren't known to be thorough keepers of history, we're kinda known for being secretive and not letting anyone know our true nature... But werewolves aren't the only ones who know about werewolf history...'' Yuki explained.

''Please don't tell me there are witches and vampires too, a man can only do so much reading...'' Namjoon said, half jokingly.

''I don't know about witches and vampires, but werewolf hunters have been there for a couple of centuries already. They had to keep track of the discoveries they made about wolves somehow for their techniques to improve through time...'' Yu said.

Namjoon closed his book and put it down, looking at Yu with a look of revelation.

''Why didn't I think of this!? You're a genius! I'll start looking around to find if some of the hunters we got arrested live near. Their stuff is probably still at their house!'' Namjoon said grabbing his phone eagerly.

''No need. I know exactly where to find what we need. The guy who kidnapped me had a library full of old books at his place... there has got to be some juicy information in there. I should have taken some of those books with me when I left but I was... I was...'' Yu started saying.

''You had more pressing matters to think about than books... It's a good lead, but it's dangerous. You said this guy had contacts with some shady people, and probably some ill-intentioned wolves. Chances are this is exactly where this Jay guy would be expecting you to be...'' Namjoon said.

''Going undetected is one of my specialties. I can go there and back and return before the new moon, no sweat.'' Yu said.

Hoseok limped into the living room a dark expression on his face.

''If you want to be an alpha, you can't keep thinking like you're a lone wolf. You're not going anywhere alone, we're coming with.'' Hoseok said, sternly.

Hoseok's serious side was an unusual sight and it left Yu speechless, so she couldn't' muster anything but a nod.

''Perfect then! Let's pack up and leave on a little team mission!'' the man said immediately back to his usual sunny self as he left to go tell the rest of the boys to start getting ready.
