lights on - shawn mendes

Damn, you look so good with your clothes on
And I'm not trying to come off too strong
But you know that I can't help it'Cause girl you're beautiful

And I can't deny I want your body
But I'm a gentleman so I'll be
The one who takes it slowly
'Cause girl you're so beautiful

~

Shawn would be picking Crystal up in 2 hours. Yet, for some reason the two were very anxious. Shawn wasn't taking Crystal on a fancy restaurant because he thought that whenever someone asked her out to date they would obviously bring Crystal Paige in a luxurious restaurant. He wanted to be different. But, of course, he couldn't help but overthink that he would screw up his own plan. He was pacing around his condo, nipping on his nails as he went over his checklist for the 20th time.

Crystal's bedroom had clothes strewn in every spot, you could barely see the floor.

"Ms. Paige has got a crush." Vivian singsonged from Crystal's bed. Vivian was her PA but has also became one of her closest friends since they spent a lot of time together. She would only call Crystal Miss Paige when she wanted to be annoying.

"What? I didn't say anything about liking him." Crystal furrowed her eyebrows at Vivian.

"Oh. You didn't have to say anything, darling." Crystal raised her brows in question. "Well, its just that whenever a guy asks you out on a date you were never this anxious on what to wear."

"I just want to look nice, V. He's a special friend to me."

"Mmm, and you've never said that about any of the guys who asked you out. Usually you would say: 'He seems nice, thought I'd give him a chance.' And when I asked you how it wen't you'd just tell me that he was so typical." said Vivian.

"Okay, maybe because they all took me to fancy restaurants I don't care about."

"And, where is Shawn taking you?"

"I don't know. He told me not to dress too dressy, though. So I'm guessing were not going to a fancy restaurant." Crystal shrugged examining a shirt.

"Well then there you go. Just pick out something you always wear."

"I can't do that!" She argued tossing the shirt somewhere.

"Why not?

"Because I always wear it."

"Okay, now that makes total sense." Vivian said sarcastically. Crystal groaned at her friend still telling herself that Shawn just wanted to get to know her better as a friend. "Special friend, huh? So tell me do friends kiss now a days?"

"Vivian Brooke Mitchell!"

Shawn was on the phone with Camila, bombarding her with questions if what he had planned was alright. "Mila, is this okay? I sent you a photo of how I set it up. Did you look at it? How does it look? Is this even okay for a first date? Am I coming off too strong?"

"Shawn, shut up. She'll love it." Camila sassed over the phone.

"Really?" He said suddenly with a soft voice, imaging how Crystal would react.

"Yes, now hang up and get ready. You are disturbing my binge-watching, Mendes." Camila joked. "Ooh! And tell her I hope we can hang out soon!"

"Will do. Thanks, Mila. Love you." And they hung up.

Two hours passed and Crystal was ready. She finally opted for a black long-sleeved turtle neck, blue jeans, and thigh-high black boots. She made it look a little more fancy by accenting it with a gold necklace and a couple rings. She went to go outside to meet Shawn who texted that he had arrived. Expecting him to be waiting in his car, Crystal was surprised to see Shawn in the living room chatting with her co-stars that also stayed in the building.

"Hey, you." Crystal walked in the room and greeted Shawn with a kiss on the cheek as did he. He too was not dressed in anything too special. Just his usual skinny jeans and a nice red button up that Crystal thought looked very good on him.

"Hey. Ready?" Shawn asked, his arm loosely wrapped around Crystal's waist.

"Yeah. You've met everybody, huh?"

"Yeah. Thought I'd come in to introduce myself." He smiled widely.

They bid their good-byes Shawn making a joke to Dave, their director, that she'll have Crystal back before 10. Vivian whispered to Crystal that Shawn looked "yummy" before she took off eager to get away from Vivian.

In the car ride to who-knows-where, Shawn made sure to blast his music and roll down all the windows including the sun roof of his car. He even made a playlist for this night with songs that he knew Crystal would be singing as loud as she can and some songs that he thought she'd like, some bonus songs that reminded him of her (he didn't tell her that though). He loved seeing Crystal carefree, singing at the top of her lungs, with that bright smile of her's, and not caring that the wind would tangle her hair.

Crystal didn't ask questions on where they were going, she liked the spontaneity. She still had no idea what Shawn had planned even as the car stopped in the middle of no where. "So is this the part where we make out in the middle of no where and you kill me then throw my body off the cliff?"

"I don't think I can kill Crystal Paige and get away with it. But the make out part, we can make that work." Shawn smirked and Crystal realized what she just said. Luckily, she didn't have to respond because Shawn got off, circled around the car to open her door.

"I watch too many movies, don't I?" said Crystal trying to save herself from embarrassment.

"Babe, you make those movies." Shawn laughed and Crystal simply accepted that she will not be winning this conversation.

Shawn led her to the back of his Jeep where the city lights looked majestic from the cliff where they are. Crystal's eyes widened at the beautiful sight. "Im not in the movies am I?" She had to ask. When this happened in the movies that she filmed, most of the times she had to stare at a green wall and pretend that it was the most beautiful thing she has seen.

"Nope." Shawn said. Crystal heard him open his trunk and when she turned around (to check that he really wasn't about grab something to kill her) she saw that Shawn set up the back of his car to resemble a cozy looking fort. Fluffy blankets and pillows covered the trunk. There were even fairy lights around the car's ceiling. She also saw that there was a little space heater on one side that would make the blankets warm with the winter air.

This time, she literally had no words. Nobody made this much effort for her before. Seeing Crystal' reaction was nothing like Shawn had imagined earlier. He smiled proudly and tried to discreetly air punched behind Crystal.

"Shall we?" He grabbed Crystal's hand and pulled her to in the warm blankets.

Once all settled in the blankets, Crystal staring out in the view of Toronto City, Shawn took the opportunity to grab the wine from the middle seats and poured them in two glasses. "For the lady," He gave Crystal a glass.

"Shawn, this is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me." She finally said and awarded him with a sweet kiss on the cheek.

"More than glad to do it for you, Crystal Paige." He smiled shyly with blush tinging his cheeks.

"How'd you know?" Crystal asked her eyes glued to the view, once again.

Shawn wondered what she meant at first, but judging from the way she stared at the city lights he answered. "Well, you live in a penthouse in New York. You kept staring out the window in my condo. I figured you'd like it here."

"How did you find it?"

"Was just driving around." He answered shortly. Truth be told, he took his first love out here. It held both great and not-so-great memories with her but he thought that it was time to move on from those times. Because he was beginning to really like Crystal, he was willing to take her back to this place however many times she wanted if it meant seeing her face like that again. Even if this place was the exact same spot she broke his heart.

Shawn glanced at his watch and said. "Hey, look up."

They both looked up and out the sun roof as the starry sky became covered with meteor showers. Crystal was not able to say anything for the second time tonight, completely in awe. Starry sky, city lights, meteor showers. Everything she loved was here.

For the next few hours they just talked, ate some take-out pasta, drank some more wine. Shawn would ask Crystal every once in a while if she was warm enough or if she was still good since she had to work tomorrow. Two hours later, they had talked about the meaning of Shawn's songs and tattoos, what Crystal's childhood was like, things she liked, places they both wanted to go to, things they want to try, and their passions.

There was a comfortable silence of just staring at the city lights until Crystal spoke. "Isn't it funny how something so beautiful can be so broken?"

Shawn didn't know what to say to that. But he listened.

"The world is so messed up, Shawn. I just want to see it genuinely happy." Shawn can't help but think that she wasn't just talking about the city.

Still not knowing what to say to that Shawn's eyes left the city lights to look at Crystal to see her frowning and a couple tears fell from her eyes. "Hey, come here." He said in a low voice but when Crystal only whimpered he was the one to reach over and pull her in his chest. "Shhh, you'll be alright."

Crystal only seemed to cry even more when he said that as she held on to Shawn tightly. For awhile, Crystal cried quietly in Shawn's chest. Shawn hummed cradling Crystal and brushing her hair occasionally. When her cries had died down, she began to pull away to rest her head on her knees that were pulled into her chest. Shawn would still brush her hair out of her face as she stared at him with unreadable expression.

"Im sorry. I-I just nobody has ever cared for me like you did, Shawn. Thank you." Crystal hugged her knees and closed her eyes stopping herself from crying her heart out to the one guy that she's beginning to really like.

"Crys, you can tell me..." Shawn trailed out. He wanted her to talk to him in hopes that it would lift some weight off her chest but didn't want to force her if she wasn't ready.

For a few minutes Crystal was quiet, thinking with her eyes closed. For some reason, Shawn made it easy to get Crystal to talk about how she is truly feeling. He was the type of person that you know you can talk to about everything and they would listen. "Its just that-. I do everything I do for my family. I sacrificed my childhood for the career I have now, for them. I push every guy away, thinking that they would just distract me from work. Even though I literally have meltdowns of how I feel so alone. A-and its still not enough. Dad can't even tell me he loves me when he's sober. All I am to him is a trophy to all his friends.

"And you... You bring food to my work, you didn't even know I don't like the food they make. You make a playlist for me. You didn't take me to a fancy restaurant when everybody else thinks that's all I care about. You bring me flowers that aren't the typical red ones. You actually get off the car to talk to people that are important to me. You plan all this on the night of a meteor shower. You even ask me first before you kiss me. I mean, God are you even real?"

As Crystal was going on about the things Shawn did differently from everyone else, a silly smile plays on his mouth. "If it makes you feel better, up until I saw you in the Met, I didn't think you were real either." He began to doubt if it were a good time to tell a joke, but Crystal snorted hiding her smile and blushing cheeks by burying her face on her knees.

"Thanks for listening, Shawn. Means a lot to me." She said now with a smile on her face as she looked at Shawn.

"Means a lot to me that you're comfortable enough to talk to me." He smiled back, sneakily scooting closer to her. "Now, that's twice you've brought up making out with me, Crystal Paige. I mean if you really wanted to, you can just ask. Doesn't mean I'll say yes, though. Maybe I'm hard to get-" Crystal cut Shawn off by pulling him by the collar of his shirt and crashed her lips in his.

Shawn smiled in to the kiss, pulling away the slightest bit to say something but not far enough that when he spoke his lips would still brush against hers. "Can't say the same thing about you. You didn't ask me first."

"Would you just shut up and kiss me."
