The elevator bell dings as the doors open and y/n steps out into the lobby. She immediately spots Peter leaning against a pillar as he watches the news. The boy hears the bell and looks up, his girlfriend coming into view. They go up to each other and Peter greets, "hey" as they meet halfway.
"Hey," the girl returns before they share a short kiss. She takes note of his gel-free hair and smiles. I guess he listened to me, she thinks. She knows that if she hadn't said anything, his hair would be heavily gelled back right now.
"So where do you wanna go?" Peter asks.
Y/n shrugs. "I don't know. It doesn't matter."
"Awesome. We'll just go wherever our legs take us, I guess," the boy replies.
"That's perfect," y/n laughs.
Peter laughs as well. "Let's go," he says, grasping his girlfriend's hand. They begin walking through the lobby in silence. Peter wears a nervous smile on his face, thinking about what he's about to do. They pass by a seating area, not noticing Brad sitting there with his laptop in front of him. Brad looks up, sees the couple walk by, and rolls his eyes.
The couple walks out of the hotel and ends up on a bridge. "I'm glad we're doing this," Peter expresses.
"Yeah, me too. This is a much better way to spend our last night here instead of being stuck in the hotel," y/n answers.
"Yeah... We can finally see the city a little bit," Peter agrees.
Y/n inhales a breath and smiles as she takes in her surroundings. This is really peaceful. "This bridge is beautiful. It's a nice place for a photoshoot. Damn it, I should've brought my camera," she comments, scoffing and shaking her head. Peter chuckles at this.
"It's okay. At least now you can just enjoy it and it'll live in your memories forever," he tells her. The girl nods in agreement.
"Hmm, yeah, that's true, I guess," she states. Silence falls upon them as they continue walking, swinging their connected hands back and forth.
"Uh," Peter utters, making his girlfriend look at him. "There's this thing that I've been wanting to talk to you about for... a while," he anxiously mentions.
Y/n slows down to a stop and stands in front of him. "Okay, what is it?"
Peter anxiously clenches his fists. Now that he's in the moment, he's absolutely terrified but he powers through. There's no going back now. "It's our last night in Europe and I had this plan that I wanted to– tell you..." he trails off before squeezing his eyes shut and shaking his head. His nerves are eating him up. Y/n takes note of this, wondering why he's so nervous. Peter reaches into his jeans pocket as he stammers, "I'm just gonna- I'm just gonna tell you." He takes a small circular case out of his pocket. "Uh... Y/n, I-"
"MJ??" y/n randomly blurts. Peter glances at her, baffled.
"What?" he asks before noticing that she's gazing at something behind him. He turns around, seeing MJ running up to them. Really, now? He thinks, kind of annoyed yet relieved at the same time that she interrupted the moment.
"What are you doing here? Is something wrong?" y/n asks her friend as she catches up to them.
"I know," MJ simply states. Y/n and Peter give her a puzzled look.
"Know what?" the girl questions.
"That you're Amethyst," MJ claims. Y/n freezes and MJ's eyes shift to the boy. "And you're Spider-Man." Now it's Peter's turn to be shocked.
"What?" the pair synchronously reacts.
Y/n tries to laugh it off. "I'm not- I'm not Amethyst. And he definitely is not Spider-Man," she chuckles.
Peter starts laughing as well. "Yeah, definitely not," he agrees before his smile drops and he turns to his girlfriend. "What do you mean by 'definitely?"
"I mean, I've been friends with you guys for like a while now, I've paid attention. It's kind of obvious," MJ claims, chuckling as if it's the most obvious thing in the world. The couple shakes their heads, trying to act normal.
"I'm not Spider-Man."
"I'm not Amethyst."
They lie in unison. "What would make you think that?" y/n questions.
"Y/n, Washington?" MJ points out, looking between the two.
"I was in that elevator. I almost died," y/n counters.
"Yeah, exactly. You were there and it just mysteriously stopped falling out of nowhere? And then Spider-Man shows up and saves you?? Meanwhile, you were nowhere to be seen," MJ addresses them both. "And you guys would like disappear out of nowhere for no reason all the time."
"No, that wa- I was sick, remember? I had my- the tummy?" Peter defends himself.
"Yeah, he was. And like you said, Spider-Man had to save me. If I was Amethyst, I could've just flown out of there," y/n chimes in.
"Amethyst didn't fly at the time," MJ shuts her down. Damn, I forgot about that, y/n thinks. "You survived a plane crash and were adopted by Tony Stark, then he announces a new Avenger?? And you disappeared at the same time as her AND came back around the same time," MJ adds. She's really making the couple nervous now.
"You know Susan Yang thinks you used to be an escort and that you were in a psych ward after your adoptive dad-" MJ cuts herself off, not wanting to say the word. Y/n lowers her gaze at the mention of Tony. Maybe I should've been in a psych ward, she thinks. MJ looks at Peter and claims, "she thinks you're a male escort."
"What? Of course I'm not a male escort!" the boy exclaims.
"Yeah and neither was I," y/n jumps in.
"Well, then you're Amethyst and Spider-Man."
"No, we're not them at all," Peter argues while y/n nods in support of his statement.
"Well, what about tonight?" MJ shrugs. "You guys snuck off and fought that thing, I saw you."
"You couldn't have seen us because we're not them! We wish we were that cool," y/n retaliates, making MJ give her an unconvinced face.
"And also, on the news, it was the Night Monkey," Peter adds.
MJ shoots him a weird look. "The Night Monkey?"
"Yeah. That's what it said on the news, and the news never lies," the boy claims. Y/n tries her best to avoid grimacing. Even she heard how fake he sounded.
MJ starts to take off her backpack. "Night Monkey, okay," she scoffs.
"What are you doing?" y/n asks as she and Peter watch her.
MJ unzips her backpack and reaches inside it. "Well, do the Night Monkey and Spider-Man use the same webs?" she questions, pulling out a contraption wrapped in webs. Oh, my gosh, she really was there, y/n thinks.
"I mean, maybe," Peter casually answers, shrugging. "Maybe he's a Spider Monkey, who knows?"
"Well, he is a copycat so he could've made his webs look similar," y/n tries to help him. Peter nods in agreement while MJ just narrows her eyes suspectingly at them. She fixates her eyes on the other girl and suddenly sighs.
"Do you not trust me with this?" she asks, frustration and sadness lacing her tone. She's never had much luck when it comes to getting close to people, so she was over the moon when she met y/n. She finally found someone she can trust, a best friend... She thought that trust went both ways... Y/n is taken aback by this. She remains speechless, not knowing how to respond. Of course she trusts MJ but she never told her her secret to protect her. Ned is already involved in this and the poor boy is always stressing over their safety... Plus, this means that he could be in harm's way one day because of them. She doesn't want to put MJ through that too.
"MJ, of course I trust you... I-"
The device suddenly radiates blue light, making MJ drop it and jump back. The couple jumps back too, Peter sticking his arm out in front of y/n protectively to keep her back. Lightning and a giant moving grey cloud appear above them. Y/n's eyes widen as she notices it has a face. It roars as it swings its arm down. It abruptly disappears and the blue light shuts off on the device. "The hell was that?" Peter asks in shock as he looks around. He turns to his girlfriend with a questioning look.
"It wasn't me," she verifies, shaking her head.
"I don't know," MJ utters, scanning her surroundings. The sparking contraption catches the interest of all three of them and they cautiously step toward it. Peter picks it up and examines it.
Y/n walks closer to him and peers at the small contraption. "What is it? Like a projector or something?" she questions.
"Yeah but it's... really advanced," Peter answers as he turns it around in his hands, analyzing it. The two girls exchange an uncertain glance.
"It- it looked so real. It-" MJ comments, still processing what she just witnessed.
Y/n and Peter turn to each other, both thinking the same thing. "Yeah, really real..." the boy trails off. It looks awfully familiar.
"Wait, so that means that-" y/n starts.
"The Elementals are fake?" Peter finishes for her. MJ gazes at them with a scared expression. "That doesn't make any sense because we were there, right?" he chatters, looking at his girlfriend and MJ. "There was fire and destruction, and- and... Who would do something like that?" he questions, glancing at y/n.
Unexpectedly, dark blue smoke swarms them, making the couple flinch. They spin around to see the same grey cloud with a face projecting from the device. They watch as it swings its arm around when Mysterio suddenly pops up, blasting it with his green lasers. Y/n feels her heart drop to her stomach as she comes to a realization. Oh, my God... it makes so much sense now, she thinks as she reflects on how he would knock her down every time she was close to killing the Elementals. He didn't want her defeating them because it would ruin the illusion.
"Mysterio," MJ whispers behind her. Peter and y/n's eyes widen in horror as they remember that he's in possession of the EDITH glasses. They sharply snap their heads to each other, nonverbally agreeing that they're having the same thought. They quickly spin around to face MJ.
"I am Amethyst... he's Spider-Man."
"I am Spider-Man... she is Amethyst."
They both blurt in sync, pointing at each other. MJ stares at them in utter shock. "And I've really messed up," Peter states.
"Yeah, he did," y/n confirms, nodding. "And I let him mess up so this is partly my fault," she admits. I knew Peter should've kept the glasses, I should've fought him on it, damn it.
"Wait, you're b- you're being serious right now?" MJ asks, flickering her eyes between the two.
"Mhm," they hum, sounding strained.
"You guys aren't joking with me? Like you're 100% serious? Because it's not funny," she nervously babbles.
"No, we're not joking," y/n answers.
"Because I was- I was only like 67% sure. Uh-"
"MJ-" y/n tries to speak.
"So why- why are you guys here?"
"MJ."
"Wh- why are you on this school trip-"
Y/n instantly interrupts her nervous yakking and raises her voice, "MJ, I know you have a lot of questions right now and I promise I will tell you everything, but right now we really need to get out of here, okay?"
"Okay. Okay," MJ responds more calmly now. A proud grin suddenly creeps onto her face. "Can't believe I figured it out," she claims excitedly as she sprints after her friends toward the hotel.
"This vacation just keeps getting better and better," y/n sarcastically remarks as she runs.
