Chapter 131: Assigned

You and Clem walk up the staircase of the admin building, while AJ runs up the stairs. AJ stops in the middle and turns around to look at you and Clem.

AJ: He's gonna let us stay, right?

You and Clem make it to the middle of the staircase. Clem sighs.

Clem: I guess we're gonna find out.

You: Let's find his office.

AJ: I know where it is. I'll show you.

AJ turns around and runs up the stairs. He makes it to the top and yells back to you and Clem.

AJ: Up here! C'mon, guys. This way.

AJ runs off.

You: Hey! AJ--wait up! You say, reaching the top of the stairs with Clem.

You and Clem walk up to two doors, one of them being partially opened. You see AJ looking at something from inside. He looks at you.

AJ: Tenn's here.

You open the door completely to see Tenn, who's playing with his toys on the floor. Tenn looks at you and Clem and smiles.

Tenn: Hey, guys.

AJ sits down with his legs crossed. You both walk in.

Tenn: Thanks for the pencils. I missed having colors.

You and Clem crouch down next to AJ.

You: Sure thing.

AJ holds up one of Tenn's toys.

AJ: Who are these guys?

Tenn: They're firefighters.

AJ picks up another toy.

Tenn: That one's a policeman. She's gonna save the day.

AJ: But what are they?

Tenn: They...these were the people who protected us.

You smile because your father was a cop.

AJ looks at you.

AJ: Where are they? I've never seen one before.

You: My dad was cop.

Tenn: Your dad must've been awesome.

You: He was. I'm sure at least a few of his partners are still alive--maybe you'll get to meet one.

AJ: That would be cool.

Tenn: Super cool. Now give it to me and...

Tenn tries to grab his toy back, but AJ pulls away.

AJ: No. He's mine now.

Tenn: Hey, give it back...

AJ: No.

You and Clem stand up.

Tenn: You don't even know what they are!

Clem: Okay, okay. She says, grabbing the toy. That's enough, you two.

AJ stands up.

AJ: It's not yours anymore.

Tenn sticks his tongue out at AJ.

AJ looks at Clem.

AJ: Clem, please?

Clem returns the toy to Tenn.

AJ: It's mine.

Clem puts her hands on her hips.

Clem: No. It's not.
