The holiday passed in a blur of buying bags, stationary and other equipment, and before she knew it, MJ was going to school. She'd walked in - it wasn't that far - and gone to the principal's office to receive her locker key, a timetable and a map. Now she was standing awkwardly outside her English class, wondering whether or not she was supposed to go in. She was about to go in when a large Asian looking boy came towards her with a grin so cheerful that it made her feel uncomfortable. He offered her a hand.

"Hi, I'm Ned. You must be the new girl. Lesson's start in 5, but we can go in early," he said, holding open the door for her.

"Uhh, I'm Michelle, but I prefer MJ."

"That's cool. Do you want to sit beside me? I don't mind if you don't, only my best friend Peter is always late and he won't mind."

"Uh, sure, why not." MJ decided there and then that she liked Ned. His enthusiasm meant that she didn't need to talk too much.

The two of them chatted and got to know each other a bit whilst other students began to file in. Eventually the teacher arrived and started the lesson.

"Leeds, Ned?"

"Present."

"Parker, Peter?" There was a long silence, and the teacher sighed. "Late, as usual." MJ liked the sound of this kid too.

"Jones, Michelle? Ah, our new student. Welcome to Midtown, Michelle!"

"Um, I prefer MJ."

"Of course. Say hi to MJ, everyone!"

There was a weak chorus of, "Hi, MJ," from around the room, and the teacher started the lesson. About 5 minutes in, MJ's life changed forever.

That is to say, Peter Parker burst into the room, panting slightly. The teacher just ignored him and carried on. It was clearly a regular occurrence, but MJ didn't care. The boy scanned the room, looking for an empty seat, and he met MJ's stare. Her eyes locked onto his brown ones, and both pairs widened in recognition. The boy's mouth hung slightly open, and she tried to capture his expression for her People In Distress sketchbook.

Peter Parker was Spiderman.

After the initial moment of shock, she raised an eyebrow at him, and he shook his head subtly. MJ looked back down at her work as if nothing had happened. It seemed like no-one had noticed their silent conversation. Apart from Ned, who seemed to be having a silent conversation of his own with Peter, in which Peter seemed to be denying everything. Then the teacher gave a pointed cough, looking at Peter still in the doorway, He blushed beet red and hurried to the spare desk.

MJ had most of her classes with Ned, so she mainly tagged along with him, her mind still reeling. Spiderman was her age. Spiderman went to her school. She knew who Spiderman was! She wondered if Ned knew his friend's secret identity.

At lunch, MJ sat at the same table as Ned and Peter. Ned was the first to break the somewhat awkward silence.

"So... Do you two know each other?"

"No," said MJ, at the same time as Peter said "Yes."

Ned just raised his eyebrows.

"Kind of," MJ clarified.

"It's complicated," Peter agreed. They ate in silence for a bit longer, before a guy in their year with designer clothes and way too much hair gel interrupted them.

"Hey, MK was it? I don't think you know how lunch tables work. You do realise that these two nerds aren't worth your time. I mean, Peter's just an orphan with no money-" MJ looked at him in surprise - "and Ned is... well, look at him. I'm Flash, by the way," the boy said, holding out a hand. MJ ignored it and carried on eating.

"Hey, Trash was it? You do realise that I know exactly how lunch tables work, and the last place I'd sit, is with someone like you. Now if you don't mind, I was eating."

Flash stumbled back like he'd been slapped. His expression was priceless - he looked like a wounded puppy. Ned and Peter looked at MJ with identical expressions of surprise, awe, and -dare I say it? - respect. The rest of the day went by without any problems, and Peter caught her up as the last class ended to ask if he could have a word with her. As they walked out of school together, Ned in tow, they passed Flash, who started talking loudly about how "My best friend Spiderman and I are going to my parent's mansion in Florida at the weekend." MJ had to bite her lip to stop herself from smirking at the irony. Ned gave her a questioning glance - maybe he did know?

Once they were out of earshot of the public, Peter stopped in an alleyway, slid down the wall, and proceeded to bash his head against it. When he finally looked up, both Ned and MJ were giving him looks laden with questions.

He addressed Ned first. "Yes, she knows. Yes, he knows. Yes, I know, it's complicated."

"That's not an answer, loser."

"Well, it started like this..."

Their friendship grew to become one of the strongest in Queen's, and Flash never bothered Peter or Ned again whilst MJ was around.
