No-no-no, no-no-no, no
Hey
No-no-no, no-no-no, no

You and Virgil were dating. You thought you were happily in love, but after a while, feelings change. Neither of you said anything about it though.

We're driving in a black car
And it's blacked out and we're spinnin'

You two were currently on your way to dinner. You had been pleasantly surprised by Virgil suggesting you two go out for your one and a half year anniversary.

We're listening to "Fast Car"
And you're driving fast and you're singin'

Usually Virgil detested going out... What changed?

Don't wanna tell you what I'm feelin'
Don't want this night to hit a ceiling

You knew that something had changed between you two. You didn't feel the spark that you used to.

I'm wearing dirty white shoes
A white t-shirt and your jacket

So even though you sat in the passenger seat of the black car, wearing one of Virgil's jackets, on your way to dinner with him, something wasn't right.

I'm laughing, but I'm lying
When you're smiling, I'm the saddest

You knew that eventually, you were going to have to... Break up. It just wasn't working. And that made you sad whenever you saw his smile, because maybe it'd be the last time.

I hide my face so you don't see it
I think out loud, hope you don't hear it

And maybe you'd be the reason why it was the last time.

It's going on 18 months now
And it's fucked up, but I'm falling

The truth was, you suspected even Virgil knew that you weren't meant to be, but neither of you had the guts to break it off.

I feel it every day now
But I'm stallin', but I'm stallin'

'Maybe if I keep it going long enough, maybe if I keep pretending, maybe it'll all work out.'

I'm here, but I'm in pieces

You knew that sooner or later, you'd break up. And that hurt.

And I don't know how to fix this
And I don't know how to fix this, no

Looking back on the memory of going out for the last time with Virgil, you realized you should have been expecting it. The signs were everywhere. That didn't stop it from hurting when he said those four words.

If I'm just somebody that you're gonna leave
And you don't feel something when you look at me

"(Y/n), we're breaking up."

You're holdin' my heart, mmm, whatcha say?
Just let me down slowly, I'll be okay

And even though you broke up, Virgil still held a special place in your heart, even if you knew it would never work out.

If you're just some habit that I gotta break
I can clear my system in 90 days

And...yeah, it still hurt to see him in public, it still hurt to hear his voice, but maybe it was for the better.

You're holdin' my heart, mmm, whatcha say?
Just let me down slowly

You and he had talked more over dinner, agreeing that it was best, even if it would sting for a while.

I get up, turn the lights out
And it's four o'clock in the morning

Virgil had stayed up all night the night before that fateful evening, weighing the pros and cons of his relationship.

I close my eyes, I can't sleep
A hotel room in New York, and

He knew his chance at sleep was futile, yet he tried.

I feel the space that's in between us
Convince myself that this is real love

Virgil knew you had been drifting away from him, and he had been you. But he fought against the cold, hard facts to try to stay together.

'Cause you made this shit so easy
And I told you my secrets

He had told you what he worried about at night, what kept him up, and you helped him fall asleep every night.

So I don't know why I'm tongue tied
At the wrong time when I need this

Virgil found himself unable to say those fateful words at the restaurant, even if he knew it was for the better.

I'm here, but I'm in pieces

As he gazed at your beautiful (E/c) eyes, Virgil already hurt, knowing he'd have to leave such a wonderful person.

And I don't know how to fix this
And I don't know how to fix this, no

You two had drifted too far apart, no amount of cuddling and kissing could fix the hole that had began to open.

If I'm just somebody that you're gonna leave
And you don't feel something when you look at me

Maybe it was better off that you were friends.

You're holdin' my heart, mmm, whatcha say?
Just let me down slowly, I'll be okay

Even though he'd never admit it, for the first while of the relationship he had been so happy. So even after the breakup, you'd always hold a piece of his heart.

If you're just some habit that I gotta break
I can clear my system in 90 days

Thankfully, it wasn't too hard on the emo. It wasn't that he didn't love you, but still getting to see you as a friend made it hurt a whole lot less.

You're holdin' my heart, mmm, whatcha say?
Just let me down slowly

But I'm not saying it still didn't hurt a lot.

I-I-I, I-I-I, I-I-I
Ooh, no
We're drivin' in your fast car, your fast car
We're drivin' in your fast car, your fast car

The ride home wasn't uncomfortably silent.

We're drivin' in your fast car, your fast car
We're drivin' all night
We're drivin' in your fast car, your fast car, yeah
We're drivin' in your fast car, your fast car, yeah

Even though you were no longer together, you made the night count.

We're drivin' in your fast car, your fast car, yeah
We're drivin' all night

Because it was the last night you two were together.

If I'm just somebody that you're gonna leave
And you don't feel something when you look at me

At least it ended on a high note...?

You're holdin' my heart, mmm, whatcha say?
(Oh, you're holdin' my heart)
Just let me down slowly, I'll be okay

At least you both agreed it was for the better...?

If you're just some habit that I gotta break (Gotta break)
I can clear my system in 90 days

At least it didn't hurt as much because you were still friends...?

You're holdin' my heart, mmm, whatcha say?
(Oh, you're holdin' my heart)
Just let me down slowly

Who am I kidding? It still hurt like hell, and neither of you truly got over the other.
