Chapter 46

The pain came back and I started pacing around again. Apollo started barking thinking he was getting let out so I shut him in the conservatory.

“Shit.” I whined at the pain.

I looked at the clock. Aaron should be home soon. If the traffic had been okay. Jesus, he’s going to kill me when he gets back and I haven’t told him what’s going on.

I settled down in front of the TV again and flicked through the channels. On the sports one was an episode of Premier League Years from 2009/2010. As I switched it on the Stoke-Arsenal match flicked on. I sucked in a breath knowing what was coming. I frowned seeing Aaron there. In so much pain.

I eventually heard the car in the drive and I got up and switched the TV off. I went over to the door when he came in.

“Hey,” He said. “You okay?”

“I think it’s time to go to the hospital.”

“Shit. Are you sure? Are you having contractions? Why didn’t you ring me? When did they start?”

“Why don’t we talk about this on the way?”

He picked my bag up and walked straight to the car and I followed him.

I could tell he was properly tense as he backed out of the drive and I put a hand on his leg, “Chill. Please.”

“How are you being so calm?”

“Because everything’s going to be fine.”

“It’s early.”

“Not by much… That happens all the time Aaron.”

We had stopped at traffic lights and he looked over at me and I smiled. He smiled back at me and squeezed my hand.

I pressed my head against the window as another contraction started and I squeezed at my thigh. Aaron grabbed my hand. “How bad is it?”

“Bearable.” I said through gritted teeth. “Just don’t remind me that they’re going to get worse.”

*

“If you tell me to breathe one more time I’m going to fucking nut you.”

Aaron stepped away from my bed and the contraction started subsiding.

“Don’t worry,” The midwife started, “Women are often cruel to their husbands. It’s just the hormones and drugs.”

“Oh I always speak to him like that.” I said laughing.

The midwife looked between us and Aaron nodded. “Pretty much. And we’re not married.”

“Oh. You’re not? Sorry. I just-“

“Fuck.” I broke her off. The pain was back. Too soon. “I’m not getting married until I’m thirty.” I said trying to speak through the contraction hoping it would go away.

“I know you’re in pain and probably don’t realise what you just said but I’m going to remember that.” Aaron whispered into my ear.

My labour was short in comparison to a lot of women but it felt like it lasted forever. Towards the end I felt like giving up and I just wanted to scream but Aaron grabbed my hand and I looked at him. He had the look in his face that I’d seen before. When he didn’t want to see me in pain. I thought about the show I had watched the previous evening when he was lying with a broken leg on the football pitch.

I couldn’t even imagine how awful that must have been. I thought of Aaron and shut my eyes and bit my lip and then it was over.

It felt like silence had descended and the little baby was being put in my arms. I felt Aaron kiss me on the top of my head and I looked into the eyes of the little guy in front of me. He cocked his head and I smiled at him.

“Let’s get him cleaned up for you.” One of the nurses said.

I think me and Aaron stood in stunned silence mostly until the baby was bought back to us. I felt my heart swell again and I fought back the tears.

“Do you two have a name?”

I looked up at Aaron, “I wanted to name him after my Grandad but it doesn’t go with either of our names so I was thinking about naming him after his favourite dog.”

“Yeah? What’s that?”

“Rover.”

I saw Aaron’s face change and I battled to keep a straight face.

“Err….” I could see his brain working out how to say no diplomatically.

“I’m just messing with you. I can’t believe you fell for that! Oldest trick in the book. Seriously, I was thinking about Dylan. ”

“Dylan?” He smiled and nodded. “I like that. It’s Welsh you know”

I smiled at the midwife.

“Okay, Dylan Gautier-Ramsey.” She said.

I then looked up at Aaron and grinned. “We did it!”

He bent down and kissed me and in a flash I saw all five years of our relationship. Dancing in the club, our first date in Pizza Express, my first Arsenal shirt with him on, the fights, the sex, the hours we’d spent talking into the night.

And now we had a baby. Something which would bind us together forever. Something so far-removed from my expectations that night at Liddy’s party when I was just looking for an easy shag.

“Anais, oh my god!” Kevin screamed as he came into my room the next day. It was literally the most gay I’d heard him sound in six years. “My little girl’s all grown up.”

“Say hello to your Godfather, baby Dee.” Aaron said passing Dee over to Kevin.

Kevin looked up at me and then down at Dee and started crying.

“Don’t cry Kevin ‘cos then I’ll start,”

“I’m just so happy for you Anais.”

Kieran and Beth arrived shortly afterwards. Beth had always been a natural with babies and when she came in she scooped Dee up in her arms and cooed over him.

“We could have one of these in a few years.” She said to Kieran who gave her a look.

“Let’s just get the wedding over with first.”

I laughed because Kieran was like me in their relationship.

“How much does he weigh?” Beth asked.

“6 lbs.”

 “He has your eyes Anais.”

“Yeah but they’re gonna turn brown like Aaron’s”

I turned and gave evils to Aaron who stuck his tongue out at me.

They stayed until I fell asleep and then when I woke up Aaron’s parents were here and the room was filled with more flowers than before.

“Some of the guys from the team sent them,” Aaron explained.

“How’s your first grandchild?” I asked Marlene.

“Perfect.” I could see her fighting back tears too.

After a few more days in the hospital we were ready to go home.

I strapped Dylan in his car seat and shut the door.

“How the hell are we going to deal with a child?” I asked realising that we were now taking Dylan home and he’d be there forever now.

“We always deal with it.” He replied kissing me.

“Let’s do this thing.”
