Chapter 15

Aaron’s pov.

I checked my phone again. No picture. I frowned. Where was she? She must have been there! It was my first start.

Maybe she didn’t get tickets… There were loads of spare seats though. I sighed and tried to fall asleep. My muscles felt heavy as I lay in bed but my eyes wouldn’t shut. It wasn’t the first time this happened, after big matches the buzz doesn’t go and you can lay awake for hours filled with adrenaline. I didn’t think this was adrenaline though. It was Anais.

I woke up groggy the next morning. I clicked on my phone again. Anais in the Wales scarf smiled at me. My phone wallpaper. Still no message though.

Had she given up? She didn’t seem like the type to give up.

I wasted more time just thinking about her before putting my shoes on. I needed to see how she was. Since being back in London I had restrained myself but I couldn’t any longer.

When I got to her apartment her door was open… What the hell? “Anais?” I called.

No reply.

I pushed the door open. Oh shit. The place had been emptied and everything they had left was destroyed. My eyes were drawn to the broken plant pot and cactus I had given her at Christmas.

I picked up my phone. “Come on, Anais” I muttered as the phone kept ringing.

“Hello?” It was a guys voice… What the fuck? “Aaron! Aaron! Don’t hang up, it’s Kevin, I work with Anais.”

I let out a sigh of relief. “What’s…?” I didn’t have time to finish my question.

“Her Dad broke in and took all of her stuff just after she lost her job. She’s a mess so if you’re calling to get angry at her then leave it out. She doesn’t need this.”

“I wasn’t going to get angry at her.” Wasn’t I? What was I doing?

“Okay…”

“Can I talk to her?”

“Look,” He hesitated, and sounded unsure “I’ll give you my address… you can come round”

I drove round to Kevin’s and he opened the door. He nodded at me. “I’m going to the shops. Give you guys some privacy.”

“Thanks, mate.”

He left and I was standing in the doorway to the living room. Anais was sitting on a window seat, knees tucked underneath her chin showing off her legs in the short pajama shorts she had on. She was looking out of the window with a cigarette in here hand. She didn’t have any make up on but somehow it made her look even more beautiful.

I cleared my throat awkwardly “Since when do you smoke?”

She didn’t look over at me, “Since my life turned to shit.”

I went and sat opposite her on the ledge, crossing my legs so I was facing her. I took the cigarette out of her hand and stubbed it out in the plate next to her.

She looked at me finally, I was relieved to see there was no anger in her eyes.

“I don’t want you to kill yourself smoking.”

“You don’t?”

I shook my head.

“Well done for yesterday,” She whispered.

I looked up, “I didn’t get a picture.”

“Kevin said I was too drunk to drive. I had a ticket though. I watched it on the internet.”
