Chapter 47

Jennifer

"Really is this necessary", I said to Adam in a whisper tone.

"Do you want Lara to end up sixteen and pregnant? Because I don't so I'm going to make things as awkward as possible. And I know a thing or two about awkward I grew up with Michael", Adam staring hard at Lara and Bryan. Nothing quite screams I never thought about you until now like not knowing a person's name. Lara apologized and Bryan gladly helped her with her math. He had to be nervous or at the very least uneasy with Adam staring daggers at him. The boy glanced back at us with his head askew on his grubby neck. His eyes are taking  in the house without moving and I knew behind those hazel iris's there were calculations going on. Beneath the coating of the ever-present red dust are freckles. Cleaned up nicely this kid would be every mother's pride back home. He's muscular from work rather than overpriced group sports and highly intelligent I didn't doubt.

You would think after our little quick fuck he would have been happier. Nope. As soon as Bryan walked into the house Adam was pissy.

I quickly kissed Adam and stood up shutting the freach white doors. "Hey!"

"Don't hey me. Let them study without you staring daggers into the poor boy", I said picking up Fitz and going to sit next to Adam. Fitz started to coo up at me like he was trying to agree with me. "Even the baby is telling you to lay off"..

Adam gave me a dry look as I smiled sweetly at him," think about it this way you'll have to do the same thing with Maria and Alma".

"Maybe even a third", he said dreading the thought.

My phone started to go off it was Elliott. I looked to Adam and stood up and said," I have to take this. Something might be going on at the hospital", I said readjusted Fitz in my arm.

"Go for it, Doc", I turned and headed for the door making sure I shut it back as I made my way to my office towards the back of the house. I couldn't help but notice Lara was still miserable trying to figure out her assignment. But at least she was getting it done.

Fitz's little mouth was like a river of drool and any time I walk with him he made sure he had a fist full of my hair.

Did he think I was going to drop him?

"I got you", I said kissing the ball spot on his head. He cooed as if saying yeah right.

Halfway to my office and decided to change my mind and head to the master bedroom. I designed the master bedroom to Adam's disappointment. I normally let him and Jolene take care of design our house. But, I wanted this house to remind me of my home with my parents. Somewhere safe and cozy. I mixed together an Old-World-inspired traditional vibe, a contemporary sensibility, and a dose of masculine flavor, ended up with this stunning bedroom. Dark walls, lots of wood, and a neutral palette are the main focus with a sitting area just in front of the four pillar bed. I had the ceiling vaulted with a dome Chandelier hanging in the center of the room. I also put in a stone fireplace that was bigger than our California king size bed. Adam had a 60 inch television hung on the wall right above the dresser that I needed to put pictures of the kids on. M There was also a nearby stone balcony I overlooked the lush garden, that Alma like to sit on and watch the sun go down.

I laid Fitz down on the bed and he immediately kicked up his feet trying to chew on them. I couldn't help but smile and take out my phone to record him. "You're so funny".

"He gets it honestly on his father's side", Edgar said appearing next to Fitz wearing a red ribbon tied around his neck. Just ignore him. He'll go away. "Haven't we tried that before. I'm still here. I'm always here".

I stopped recording Fitz,"What?"

"You know as much as much as Adam hated Rodger, substance abuse is still something that runs in his family", Edgar said licking his paw.

"What are you trying to say, don't beat around the bush like a little bitch", I said annoyed he was even here. I thought I was doing better, I was bonding with the kids. Things were good for the most part.

"Who knows what he'll grow up to be. His odds don't look very good. A mother who psychotic, the father who couldn't get past High School---"

"But runs a billion dollar Empire. Not bad for a high school diploma", I said standing up for Adam ... Against myself? "And I'm not crazy, I'm a doctor, a mother and a wife---"

"A doctor who just suggested infecting a population with a super strain of Ebola. Someone didn't take their Hippocratic Oath seriously. And my dear, if you were sane you wouldn't be seeing me", Edgar said coldly.

"Why are you here?" I asked.

Edgar stretched out then laid down primly wagging his tail back and forth in a hypnotic motion," I push you, to do the things you would never consider to do. And right now, you need to think of the betterment of your children".

I wasn't expecting that. He completely caught me off guard,"How?" I said with bewilderment.

"By being ready when Adams plan fails", Edgar hissed.

"It won't", I stated.

"I will. And when it does it'll be time to get dirty", he said.

"I lost my mind for a second I'm not going to kill innocent civilians to send a message", I said with my hands on my hip.

"Do you love him?" Again I wasn't expecting that from Edgar and see pointed his paw to Fitz.

It wasn't a single doubt in my heart that I did. This little baby was mine. And even though he had no idea what love was. I see it in his smile, his little Coos of delight even when he cries. "Yes", I said barely above a whisper as my voice broke.

"This ends with you on top. There is no other way. Right now, you need to be the monster Adam can't be. Or your children will pay the price", Edgar said as I focused on Fitz. " before your time on Earth is over you will find yourself doing despicable things in the name of their safety. Their happiness. You'll play the fool to make them happy. They'll be the best version of yourself and Adam. To do that, you must protect their future".

Vvvvvzzzzttt vvvzzzttt vvvzzzttt

Instinctively I checked my phone. It was Elliot again,"You know what needs to be done. The only question is do you have the balls to do it?"

I ignored the call.

"There was a time when the houses feared you more then Adam or Michael. There was a girl who brought the strongest cartel to their knees. There was a woman who shook the very foundation of this world. Is she still in you? What has a life of luxury soften you?"

I remain silent.

"Make the call", Edgar demanded.

"To who? You know Alejandro said no", I spoke up.

"No one tells you no", Edgar stood up and slowly started to walk away," they say I love of a mother is unconditional. Let's see if it's true", and with that said he disappeared.

I stared down at the phone in my hand. How much did I love my family? How far would I go to protect them?

I took a deep breath. I made up my mind, I had made up my mind the second I told Adam what I wanted to do. I went to my contact list and called Alejandro.

"Yeah?"

"I need something", I said staring down at Fitz with my other hand wrapped around my belly.

" I told you I'm out", he said.

"And I said I fucking need something. Don't you ever tell me you're out. I tell you when you're done. If I say jump you do so on command. If I say chop your balls off and serve them to me you had better ask how I like them cooked. I know every crime you ever committed on every continent. Don't fuck with me you know what I'm capable of. So you had better pick who you are more afraid of them.... or me", I stated.

He paused for a moment before saying," What's the job?"

Better.
