Yea, I say (moreover thought), abruptly. It's just-that, My mind was honestly blank, I think my blood pressure is low.
"Did you eat your breakfast?" And by eating my breakfast, what she meant is drink the berry smoothie she made for me this morning. Smoothies and juices are all that I've been restricted to eat. Dr. Whale wasn't the one that instructed that, he actually said I could eat stuff like oatmeal and other soft foods, but Mom is just too paranoid. I have been craving for a burger since I got out the hospital.
No, I mumble. I look away before I could see the annoyance in her eyes. I forgot.
"And you wonder why you get the shakes, Melody," Mom nags.
I'll go get it from the fridge then, I whine, sounding like a normal teenager for once. I place my hands on the coffee table and haul myself up from the floor. My muscle felt like rusted metal hinges and my legs fell asleep, but I act like nothing is wrong with me. After all, I have gotten used to the mild pains in my body but I also didn't want Mom to keep nagging me and treating me like a frail child.
Sadly, I'm pretty sure she could notice by the time I was stomping on the wood floors. She didn't say anything though.
Soon as I got to the kitchen, I open the fridge and grab the cup my mom had set front and center. Grabbing a straw from the utensil drawer, I slip it into the cup and start drinking the thick smoothie. The drink was sweet but I still crave for a burger, or at least something to chew on. I got a hole cut into my neck. It's not like I needed to have my jaw wired shut.
Well what did you expect when you dove in front of that animal?
I roll my eyes.
My favorite guest has arrived to the show.
Ever since I woke up, the Voice has been lurking around more than usual, and I know why. It's all because my magic is weaker. I can't hold it off as much as I would like. As a result, the Voice likes to pop in whenever it wants to, but the plus side for me is that it can't get hold of my magic either. All it can do is taunt and poke fun at me. I suppose we both are weak at something.
It's a blessing and a curse.
Honestly, you should've just let that woman die, the Voice states.
That woman is my mother, I spat, and I wasn't going to let Sabor kill her.
It'd save us from a lot of trouble.
I'm not like you, I state, I would never let my mom get hurt, not by the hands of that creature. I was there and I did something. End of story.
What about that other beast you called a mom? What did you do for her? It asks. I could sense a smirk in its voice, if it actually had a body of its own.
If I could growl, I would. If I could pull this voice from my mind and slap it across the face, I would.
Don't you ever bring her up! My hand clenches around the plastic cup. You know, you're responsible for that too. I never wanted any of that to happen.
But it's not like I cared about that animal. We're better than them.
They were my family too, and if I could, I would've traded places with her. I slam the cup on the island countertop without thinking.
Still... they didn't care about you anymore. Why do you think they kicked you out? They used you and they dumped you.
I bite the inside of my cheek, giving me something else to focus on rather than turning myself into a burning inferno. I don't blame them for what happened and what they chose to do with me. It's all my fault. I wasn't strong enough to stop you.
