"It was scrunched up and in the bin. Don't lie to us and tell us you haven't read it." Jay was sitting across the room from me.
I cross my arms against my chest. "It's probably a joke, the back door was open when I came in the house last night," I say looking at Jay.
"The back door was open? So you're telling me. You slept in this fucking house knowing there could be some random creep in here!?" Janyce stands up and frowns at me in disbelief.
I shrug, trying to brush it off. "Nothing happened. It was probably the other neighbour's pranking us or something" I say about to walk away, but I was pulled back.
"I got the same note on my car window last night, threatening you," Kaz sighs. "I'm just worried that you aren't safe,"
"WHY DO YOU CARE? SHOULDN'T YOU BE DOING YOUR GANG WORK? " I look over at Anthea and Janyce, who's the attention I've caught very well. " This whole friendship thing we all have is probably a joke to you three," I say walking closer in the living room. I turn to Jay. "...And I thought I could trust you," I point at him as he lowers his head.
Anthea and Janyce come up behind me.
"Gang? This is a joke right?" Janyce asks in confusion.
Freddie looks at her and then shakes his head. "No, it's not a joke."
"W-what gang?" Anthea questions for a name.
"The Black Kings," Jay responds to her, without looking at her.
Kaz grabs me arms and slight lifts it. "We may do horrible things but we still have hearts, Dee." He says. "We won't hurt you, girls."
I look up at him and soften up. "I know you guys won't hurt us, but I just wished you guys told us sooner."
"You wouldn't have let us come this close to you if we told you from the start," Jay exclaims as he shoots up from his chair.
I frown and think about how true what he said was. I would never have let the girls or myself near anything dangerous relate. It was the whole point of coming to Los Angeles.
" I'm probably a little more afraid of you boys but I know that they'll protect us if anything happens," Anthea goes up to Jay. "You will, right?" Anthea says lifting his chin, so he will look at her in the eye and tell the honest truth.
Jay hugs her. "Forever,"
I look back at Kaz, who was already looking down at me with a small frown. "Listen, I'm sorry yesterday. I wasn't myself yesterday. I didn't hit you too hard, did I?" I bring my fingers up to his chin and turn it to look at his cheek. I see a little red scratch on his cheekbone, making me feel guilty.
"Remember I'm made out of bricks." He gently grabs my wrist, removing the tension between us. "I'm sorry for being cold to you. It's kind of just who I am. You know?" he explains giving me an encouraging smile. "I always try to control it when I'm with you, but sometimes it just slips from my mind,"
My phone dings twice, telling me I got messages. My eyes widen as I read them out to everyone in the room.
UNKNOWN NUMBER
Everyone's going to protect you now? I guess everyone is just going to have to be in this game too.
Watch out, darling. I'm coming for you.
My eyebrows knit and I tense up. What does this person want from me?
"It's okay, we're here princess," Kaz comforts me while everyone in the room nods, agreeing with him. The text made my stomach tighten. "Dee, can I talk to you alone?" Kaz side-eyes everyone, who were now talking to each other.
I nod at him and grab his hand. We both walk out into the backyard, where it was easier to talk.
"What's up?" I ask sitting on the hammock as he closes the sliding door.
"I don't know if you want to talk about. It's about this morning," He looks up at the windows, making me realise what he was talking about.
My mental breakdown.
I quietly sigh, not knowing where to start. "I was upset and in pain. I've recently been getting these extreme reminders of the past and I go crazy sometimes."
"You were like talking to someone. Who?" He was asking questions which made me wonder how much he is looking out for me.
I look at him and his icy blue eyes are already staring back at me. "I was talking to my mum," I probably sound like a psychopath.
"I do it too. I talk to my mum when I feel like I really need her guidance." He places his large hand on top of my tiny ones.
I love the fact that he's trying to comfort me and I felt easy because his way of calming me was working.
Both our heads snap towards the sliding door when we hear it open. "Lovebirds! We're going out to eat tonight so get ready!" I hear Anthea scream. I tried so hard not to redden when she called us 'lovebirds'.
I stand up and begin to walk inside the house.
"Kaz?" He looks at me. "Thanks for that. I really appreciate it." I say before looking away.
The small spark in my pit told me he was stilling looking my way with a small smile on his face.
