Confusing Enlightenment

"There's nowhere I belong," I mumbled.

"Nonsense!" declared Stark with a chuckle. "What's the name of your pack?"

Why was everyone asking me about some pack? First Drake and now Stark. "What's a pack?" I asked.

Stark gave me a strange look. "Who's your Alpha?"

"What's an Alpha?"

Stark glanced at Bo and then back at me. "A pack is a group of werewolves who live and fight together, and an Alpha is their leader. Did you know any of that?"

I shook my head. "My parents never told me anything about any pack or Alpha. They've kept me in the dark my whole life." The truth was bitter. It was a lot to process; learning that you've really known nothing about your species and the fact that your own parents were the ones who had kept the information from you.

"Where are your parents?" he asked. The image of my parents' bloody corpses hit me like ton of bricks, and I looked away quickly. I didn't want Stark or Bo to see the stray tear that had escaped from the corner of my eye. "I see," said Stark grimly. "Do you know how long you've been in captivity?" he asked, changing the subject.

"What's the date today?" I asked, and Stark rattled off the month and day. I took a deep breath before asking the real question. "I mean, what year is it?" Stark looked stunned, but he told me the year. I did the math quickly in my mind.

"About three years," I croaked, instantly paling. "I turned seventeen a couple weeks ago, I guess." Realizing that I had spent three years of my life being tortured was what brought my guard down. My head dropped into my hands, and tears flowed from my eyes. I kept my sobs to just a sniffling sound, and after a couple minutes, I wiped my eyes and looked back to Stark.

"What's going to happen to me?" I asked quietly. I had no home, no family. I had nothing to go back to.

"You'll stay here." The words weren't coming from Stark's mouth, and he turned around to glare at Bo, who was staring steadily at me.

"Are you sure?" I asked in disbelief. These strangers were offering me a place to stay when they didn't even know me.

"Yes," answered Stark. "Until we figure out what to do, since technically, you are a rogue." He must have seen the confusion on my face. "A rogue is a werewolf who belongs to no pack and answers to no Alpha."

"Oh."

Bo straightened and walked over to me. He went to touch my shoulder, and the moment his finger came in contact with my skin, I jumped. There was a surge of energy between us that was both painful and pleasant.

What was that? whispered my wolf, and she sounded excited. I stared at Bo, and returned my gaze unblinking. We both looked startled.

"Bo." Bo looked towards Stark, and I glanced down at the floor, my cheeks burning. "Go find Dot and have her help Tyler get something to eat and have her find some clothes for the poor girl as well. Then, I need you to come back here. I have something I need to discuss with you." Bo nodded, and I thought I saw worry flash through his dark eyes, and I followed him out the door.

"Thank you, Stark," I said quietly, and he smiled at me and then returned to what he was doing earlier on the computer. I followed Bo back to the living room, where he called out, "Dot!"

The girl who had called Bo into the room when she saw me boosted herself off of the couch, where she had been sandwiched between two guys. She strolled over to us, and addressed me with a warm grin. "Dad said to get Tyler something to eat and to find her some clean clothes."

Dad? As in, my dad's the Alpha? I hadn't known what an Alpha was for very long, like barely fifteen minutes, but that seemed to be a big deal.

"Alright, bro," she said with a smile. Then, Dot turned to me. "Tyler, huh? That's so cool, having a boy's name for a girl name." Before I could respond, Dot grabbed my hand and led me into a different room, and we left Bo behind.

I don't know why, maybe it was because he was the first one who had really talked to me, but I didn't want to be separate from Bo.... and neither did my wolf.

~~~Bo's POV~~~
"What the hell was that, Bo?" asked my dad. His voice wasn't as angry as it was confused. "You can't just go making decision about a rogue's living arrangements. I'm not dead, so you're not Alpha."
"She isn't really a rogue," I muttered. "She obviously has no idea what a pack or Alpha is."
"I know," sighed my dad, "but by definition, she is, and I don't know how the rest of the pack will react to a rogue living here."
"What are you going to do?" I snapped, suddenly angry. "Are you going to just dump her out into the world with no one if the pack doesn't like her?"
Fat chance, grumbled my wolf.
"She's been tortured by hunters for three fucking years!" I cried. The thought of what my mate had been put through made me so furious and violent. I had only just learned her name, but I was already protective. I swiveled around and punched one of the walls in the office, leaving gaping hole in the drywall.
"Bo, calm down," ordered my dad. My nails cut into my palms, and I took a few deep breaths. I mumbled an apology and collapsed into the chair Tyler had been sitting only a few moments ago. It still smelled like her. "I need you tell me what's going on with you. You refused to leave Tyler's bedside, and you only just met her."
I remained silent. It had taken a lot of convincing on Dot's part to get me to leave Tyler and go get breakfast this morning, and I had been about to go back up when I found her awake in the living room. It had been a relief to see her walking around, since I had been watching her sleep the last seventy-two hours.
"Bo." My dad's voice interrupted my thoughts, and I looked up at him. "Tell me."
I sighed. "She's my mate."
My dad leaned back in his chair. "I suspected as much. I saw the way she reacted when you touched. I don't think she knows who you are, though." I nodded sadly. I had noticed it, too. My dad folding his hands on top of his desk and it looked like he was thinking of how to say what he wanted to say.
"I think it would be best if you didn't tell her you're her mate," he said finally. He saw my shocked face and quickly added, "Let her get used to the idea of a pack and Alpha before you bombard her with you being her mate. It would only confuse and scare her."
"Alright," I said glumly. My dad was right; it would be better for Tyler if I waited to tell her. That didn't mean it was going to be easy.
