[Chapter 22] Another Chance?

She sighs, "I did the same as you, Emma. I was trying to give her, her best chance. There was something out there trying to ruin our happiness, so I gave her up to protect her. But, I suppose I failed her."

~Regina's Flashback~

After easing her car into a complete stop, Regina Mills put the vehicle on park. She pushes open the door, and once exiting the car, slams the door shut. The only thing in her view was the blinding blue and red lights shining in her eyes. The paramedics and officers were scouring the crime scene.

It was late at night. Almost all of the residents of Storybrooke were suppose to be asleep. The mayor along with them, but Regina was abruptly awakened when the phones blared throughout her large home. After answering the phone, she was informed that there was an accident along the road leading to the edge of town. A John... or Jane, one couldn't remember, Doe was hit by an oncoming vehicle. The mayor wasn't given any more detail. It was just urgent that she'd come to examine the scene. Being the mayor and all, Regina could maybe identity the unknown victim.

She ducks under the yellow police tape and walks closer to the crime scene. Fortunately, since it was so late at night, there wasn't a crowd surrounding the crime scene. The only people out and about were the police, the paramedics, and the mayor herself. Regina was hoping this situation would be over soon; she would really want to get back to bed. It was times like these she regretted being the mayor.

"What is the meaning of this?" she yell out.

Hidden behind the vehicle, probably the one that hit the victim, Dr. Whale pops his head up. "Ms. Mills, glad you came."

"Like I had a choice."

With that, Dr. Whales stood from his position and makes his way towards Regina. He pulls off the rubber gloves from his hands and stuffs them in his pocket. "True. But, at least you could help us try and identify the body."

"You said the victim was in critical condition. The last thing we need is another John Doe in the hospital."

"Actually, our John Doe is a Jane."

"What?"

"And, Jane didn't make it."

"What the hell happened?!" she snaps.

"Well, it seemed like it was a hit and run. An unknown caller reported the accident."

"So, you caught the criminal?"

"Unfortunately, no. The vehicle was empty when officers came to the scene. Probably, another person drunk off their ass decided to take a joy ride and hit an innocent girl."

"That's just great."

"If you don't mind, Ms. Mayor, would you care to try to identify the body? Hopefully, we can give this girl a proper burial."

She sighs. "Let's get this over with."

"Right this way then."

Dr. Whales was the first to walk towards the body, with Regina right behind him. Nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary. This was just going to be a simple task for the mayor. Identify the body and she'll be on her way. Oh, but life can be so cruel. Destruction and heartache can come at any corner of the world, striking those unexpectedly. Little did Regina Mills know that in a few close seconds her life was going to change forever. For better or for worst, one could not tell.
