He pulled out his phone. Peter wouldn't see the messages until break, but he could at least try to make him feel included.

Hey Peter!

The bus stinks I'd definitely rather be with you

Still can't believe they did this to you.

oh he's about to announce the location....

drum roll...

wait what its stark industries.

well I guess that explains why he made such a fuss about your internship ;-;

Ned was the last one off the bus, gazing up at the building with awe. He knew Peter had started living here last year, but he'd only visited twice and its sheer size took him by surprise every time.

They went through security and a tour guide took them into the elevator. The first hour was a tour of the lower floors, and then they did a workshop in one of the labs. It was nothing new, and Ned texted Peter whenever he could without getting caught. He thought he occasionally heard some noises from the vents but it was probably his imagination.

"Oh," said the guide as she checked their schedule after lunch. "Looks like there have been some changes. I've been given permission to take you all up to the top floors where the Avengers work, live and train."

A ripple of excitement ran through the group. Was this because of Peter? Why else would the heroes want to meet a random high school tour group? Did they know he wasn't here?

They followed the guide up to the penthouse, which Ned had visited before. As they exited the elevator, Ned heard a clang and turned back to see a man fitting the vent cover back into place. It took a moment to recognise him as Hawkeye, in which the class disappeared around a corner.

"You're one of Pete's buddies, aren't you?" Clint asked.

Ned nodded, starstruck. He'd never been alone with an Avenger before. (Peter didn't count.)

"We're doing a surprise party for him, but I didn't see him when I was following you guys earlier. It's unlikely that I overlooked him but I thought I'd check anyway: is Peter here?"

"No, sir," Ned squeaked out. "He wasn't allowed to come on the trip because everyone thinks he's faking his internship."

Clint winced, and raised a hand to his earpiece. "Guys, abort! Peter isn't here- too late."

From down the hall there was a yelled "Happy Birthday!" Followed by the screams of Ned's classmates.

Ned and Clint both ran towards the common area and emerged into chaos. The teenagers were cowering from the confetti cannons; balloons and confetti rained down, there was a pile of presents in the middle of the room, bunting and streamers were plastered over the walls and the Avengers were arranged around the room wearing party hats and expectant smiles and scanning the confused and scared group for a Peter who wasn't there.

Ned snapped a picture.

"Guys, he isn't here!" Clint strode into the room.

"What do you mean?" Tony pulled off his party hat and looked between the faces as if expecting Peter to appear out of nowhere. "He has to be here."

"I thought you arranged this trip just so he would be here!" Steve crossed his arms.

"I did!"

"Maybe he got ill?" Bucky suggested.
