Chapter 7: Visiting The Fence.

Start from the beginning

He leans down to my ear, his lip brushing against my skin, then whispers, "But I can feel myself falling in love with you, baby girl." My breathing hitches in my throat.

"I love having that effect on you." He whispers, his hot breath tingling only bare neck, making me shiver. Baby girl? Why is he calling me that? That sounds like something that you Call a girl that you're just hooking up with. I don't hook up with people. That's an Olivia thing.

He then pulls away, smirking.

Then I see a lady with her long, blonde hair in a braid, and tattoos on her neck. She walks up to us. "Hey Colsen." She says. "Zoey! I thought you transferred to Amity." Colsen says, in shock.

"I did. Two years ago. But I came back. I want you." She says. "Zoey, we broke up two years ago! Can't you go get with some high Amity boy?" He says, exasperatedly.

"Fine. I thought you would want to come to Amity with me, but you're with this trash here." She says, gesturing to me. I bite my lip, then jump in before he can say anything.

"We're just friends, thank you very much." I say to her. "At least my neck isn't covered in trashy tattoos." I say, putting a hand on my hip dismissively.

Even after that, Colsen doesn't say anything to ignore the trash comment. I guess I am trash. All I've ever though of myself as was trash.

She scoffs, and walks off. I didn't realize until now that I'm crying. When Colsen notices, He hugs me tight. I push him away. "Just, just, I need to be alone." I say, then run past him to the train tracks.

"Why?" I ask myself, "Why me?" I look up at the dark, rocky ceilings and frown.

I hate myself.

I continue to walk, until I reach the train tracks. When I get there, I notice that he isn't here yet.

I bite my lip as Zeke begins to give a speech about the gaurds, and all they do for the city. "If you rank lower than sixth place, you will have to be a guard." He tells us. "If you rank 7th or 8th place, you will get a city sector choice. If you rank 9th or 10th, you will automatically be assigned to the fence."

When the train horn sounds, I begin to jog, and then I jump into the train after Angela, who pulls out an inhaler as soon as she gets onto the train.

I stand on the edge of the train, leaning my head out, looking to see where we are. I see the fence up ahead, and Zeke shouts, "Time to Jump!" With that, he leaps out of the train, and I follow close behind.

I walk along the side of the seemingly endless chain link fence, along with the other initiates.

I remember coming here when I was little. I was seven or eight, and I was very scared of the Dauntless Guards who guard the fence.

They are heavily padded in bullet-proof gear, and carry huge weapons. Scary for a seven year old girl who's already seen some of the scariest people in the whole city, right? I know.

An Amity truck soon appears out of the distance near the fence. a guard walks up to the driver. "What's the entrance code?" The guard asks.

"427549." The driver says, and the guard enters the code into an electronic lock pad, and the gate doors fly open with an eerie creaking sound.

"You may pass." The guard says. "Thank you." The Amity man driving the truck says, and drives away. "That is one of the most crucial things we do here at the fence," the guard says, smiling.

The truck pulls through, and when it turns to head down the dirt road to the Amity Headquarters, I see a couple of people on the back of the truck holding banjos and tambourines.

Sometimes I think that it would've been nice to join them, but then again, I'm too depressed for them. They're always so happy. It almost makes me sick.

Then another guard speaks up. He has blonde, buzz cut hair, and orange reflective sunglasses. "I'm Dylan. This is all you need to know about the fence, so if you want, you may walk around; see what it's like." Dylan says. Dylan, think, What a nice name.

With that, we all begin to walk around the fence. Ariana, Abby, and I walk over by the Amity headquarters, where the orchard is. Then I see a face I never expected to see.

It's Meredith!

The woman who performed my aptitude test. When she turns around and sees me, she smiles. "Hey Maddie!" She says, dropping the bag of peaches in hand, and running over to me. She hugs me. I barely know her, but she's already closer to me than most of my friends, just because she knows one of the darkest things about me.

"Hey." I say, smiling. I pull back from the hug.

"Well, I'd better get back to my peaches. It was good seeing you, though!" She says, smiling.

"Good to see you, too!" I say, and my friends and I walk away, just as Uriah shouts, "GO TO THE TRAIN!"

With that, we sprint to the train, just as soon as the last person gets on. In a flash, I'm on the train, standing by the door. I watch the fence get smaller and smaller, and I sigh, because it reminds me of myself.
