"I'm so sorry David." Her voice cracked.
"How is this possible?"
"Way before I had you I was madly in love with a man by the name of Derek. He was perfect to me or so I thought. One day we got into an argument and he left. He didn't show up until the next morning. He confessed to me that he had cheated with a woman he met at the bar. I was heartbroken at that very moment. "
"Where is this going?"
"Let me finish." She scowled.
"Go ahead."
"I made him leave. I couldn't stand being around him anymore. A week later there was a knock at the door and his bestfriend had shown up. He wanted to grab clothes for Derek. I had a few drinks in my system and one thing led to another. I had sex with his bestfriend who was James."
"You nasty as hell." My face scrunched up with disgust.
She hit my arm. "So, when men do it to women what are they?"
"Nasty too shit." I said in a duh tone. "Come on with the story."
"Weeks later I was pregnant with you and I was the happiest I've been feeling in weeks. The only thing I wasn't sure if you were Derek's or James so I told them both. There was no point in hiding it. Derek wouldn't even look at me the same anymore and I couldn't blame him but the feeling were mutual at the time. Once I gave birth to you I found out you were..." She stopped.
"Why did you stop?"
"Because I don't want you to hate me."
"It's a little too late for that." I blurted out on accident.
She shook her head. "I found out that you are Dereks."She waited for me to say something but I couldn't.
"Derek didn't want anything to do with me but he wanted to co-parent and I was okay with that. James and I decided to give the relationship thing a try and things were good but James would always be busy. He would come home late night and some nights not at all. It was a couple months after your 3rd birthdays when Derek showed up at my door on a late night and I think you know what happened. Next thing you know I'm pregnant again. James already knew I stepped out of the relationship because we weren't having sex. Once he found the baby was Derek's he was livid. He beat me so bad I went into labor early." She paused again. I looked over slowly seeing her wipe her tears away.
"I'm sorry you had to go through that."
"She was a strong one. Derek was now mad at me because I didn't come to him. He threatened to go to the police if I didn't give up my rights for you and Ella. Mind you James was already threatening me to give her up or I'll be dead. I got to keep her for a few months but one night James stormed grabbing Ella from and took her away. He told that he had dropped her off with Derek and I couldn't see her anymore. Everything was strange to me because Derek hadn't said anything about you. I would meet up with him secretly every Friday to see Ella and he would see you. He told that James beat his ass and wasn't giving you up. He reminded you all the time that he loved you until the visits were cut short."
