• Talk about the future as well as the past. In times where Malik is talking about his lost friendships, the reader (I know I am, anyway) is practically begging (spoiler alert!) for him to say that he plans to reach out to him or write to him before he passes. If he later did this in a letter or something, this would be very emotional and satisfying. Or even if Malik thinks half-heartedly, maybe I'll find the time to reach out, to tell them that I've missed them all these years and I'm sorry we didn't stay close.
  • Have more times where Malik reminds himself that he's writing to his daughter. For example, when talking about friendships, he says that he hopes she makes so many friends and then if he gives her some sort of advice? It reminds the audience that there's many stories in this one and that the purpose of his writing is for her to have something to hold onto.

Review -
The moment I read the blurb, I was dreading reading this book, purely for the fact that I try to avoid plots and stories that I think, or know, will make me cry. Stories like this strike very close to home for me, so it's very difficult to keep strong reading it - I'm the kind of person that starts crying, comes up with a million reasons to keep crying, and probably won't stop until I'm hysterical and have no more tears left to cry. This story is absolutely heart-wrenching and heartbreaking, in a good sort of way. It puts a lot in perspective and reminds the reader of any past experiences they may have had, and it shares insights and understanding into how difficult life can really be.
This story is one of those stories that isn't just a story, because it becomes an experience. It's something that many readers will hopefully look back on in empathy and understanding. When reaching situations similar to these in the future, heaven forbid and touchwood, the reader may look at this story as helpful and something that's given them key information in coping in the best way possible.
Stories like these are so, so important. Not just if you want to have a good read or a good cry, but also to look at the relationships and experiences and the thankfulness. You might not be guaranteed to cry when reading this book, and it's okay if you don't or don't want to, but this book is so personal whilst at the same time something that could be considered a light read. IT's something that you could read on a train to work or after a breakup or maybe even something you'd read to your kids (depending on a lot of factors with your kids, though, of course).
The language itself is easy to read and flows, it is clear and direct and offers emotional imagery and support at the same time. I couldn't find too many typos and the plot itself is superb.

- Absolutely, very highly. It is a story that I will return to, hopefully with a box of tissues!
