Chapter 10-I Can Catch Any Wave, But Not His Heart

NAGISA'S POV

It's been so long since I hung out without my guy disguise. I've been in Japan for a month now, laying low and going out with my disguise because I keep bumping into students from the academy. To hang out with Poppy as myself was awesome.

What makes things better was that she brought my surfboard with her. It wasn't exactly a hot weather, and neither was it considered cold so we were both clueless to what exactly to wear. We both owed it to Mrs Hillocks, who forced us into wetsuits for our safety.

"I can't wait to surf! There's so much tingly feelings I can't take it anymore!" Poppy squeals in her seat. Mr and Mrs Hillocks both shake their head as they drop us off at the nearby beach.

"Chill, Poppy. We're already here." I say as I remove my headphones. Poppy's so excited she couldn't even unbuckle her seatbelt. Laughing, I help her out of the car seat and shove her out of the car.

Once we had our valuables stored into the locker, we hit the surf. But before that, I saw the SA having a picnic by the beach. I don't know much about them but they didn't seem like beach people.

"It's them-" I clamped Poppy's mouth shut once she saw them as well.

"They don't know." I hissed in her ear as she nodded. "Let's just go surf."

After a couple of stretching exercises, we were ready to surf. Poppy was so itchy to go, she ran forward and tripped over her own foot, falling face first into the water. I ran forward to help her, chuckling as well.

"Not funny." she says, really pissed about the situation. A few seconds later she tackled me into the sandy floor and we started splashing each other with seawater. We were laughing our hearts out, and the feeling was amazing.

Poppy still lived up to the Hillocks reputation of being excellent on the waves. She executed all her signature moves perfectly, while I, on the other hand, just tried my very best. I wasn't as good as she was, since I haven't really found the time for practicing, especially after recovering from the mango allergy.

"Woah, that was awesome!" Poppy yelled at the top of her lungs as she rested on her surfboard. I too, was panting and I nodded happily at her. "If only David could see this."

"David?" I raised an eyebrow and Poppy clapped her mouth shut. I stared at her until she slowly uncovered her mouth.

"Ya'know, David Sean Jacobs? National surfing champion that kicked Adam and Theodore one spot down each. He's hot." Poppy said, her blue-grey eyes sparkling. Then I started smiling like a fool and she splashed water at me.

"So he beat Adam and Theodore to the surfing championships?!" I gasped. Adam Smith, my friend and Theodore Hillocks, Poppy's older brother. They both have killer surfing moves and to think David, the Hawaiian-born Russian, newbie to the competitive surfing world had not only made an impact on surfing, but also made an impact on Poppy's wild teenage heart.

"You like him, don't you?" I smacked Poppy's arm and she flushed red.

"Yes, unfortunately." she sighed. "I can catch any wave, but not his heart."

So inspirational yet so true. For a moment, I felt like I could relate to her until I realised what I was thinking and blushed too.

"Oh my god!" Poppy screamed as she got up and fell into the water. I dragged her out as she choked on the seawater.

"You like someone too!" she shrieked like a little girl and it took me a while before I calmed her down. Chill Nagisa, the only way is to get her to talk about David.

Apparently, David had sat right beside a nervous Poppy during the annual national surfing championships and they talked. Mesmerized by him, all Poppy could do was to stay calm and smile back. According to Poppy, she made a record breaking score with a new signature move that got executed. What nearly torn Poppy's heart to shreds was that the male surfers were having a briefing during her win.

"Poppy, slow down. I can't catch what you're saying!" I yelled back as Poppy kept blabbering about that one guy. It got faster and faster as it progressed and I got lost in all the excitement. And we were still at the ocean, the shore quite a distance away.

"There's a wave to catch there!" I piped up, stopping Poppy from getting absorbed into her train of thoughts. Poppy exclaimed and she started paddling towards the open ocean...

Hours later, we cleaned ourselves up and got ready to go home. Surprisingly, the SA was keeping up their picnic stuff. Talk about perfect timing.

And apparently Poppy had to walk up close. Ryuu instantly recognized Poppy's familiar red hair and my first instinct was to grab Poppy's shades and hide my face.

"What are you doing?" she asked, shocked from my sudden movement.

"He doesn't know. He thinks I'm some random girl down the street that isn't Japanese and whose name is Lily." I whispered and she immediately nodded and went with the plan. Poppy's such a great friend, even though I can feel her screaming about what's happening between the two of us later on.

Ryuu spoke something to the SA and he walked towards us. I could feel my body stiffen while Poppy just kept her cool.

And for once Ryuu actually seemed like a normal human who doesn't love animals more than I think he does. He was checking us out. And I just had to look sunburnt at that time and my embarrassed face would certainly cause some kind of bigger misunderstanding.

"Now that you're done checking us out, do you mind? We seriously need to go." Poppy sassily spoke up. Ryuu cocked his head to the side and stared at her, puzzled and unable to catch her words properly. Obviously his English wasn't good, so time for me to join the conversation.

"What my friend was trying to say is, we need to go and we have no idea why you're here."

His face darkened as I spoke and I couldn't help but feel guilty. "Oh, okay. But Lily, can I meet you at that swing again? Maybe this evening at about 5?" Before I opened my mouth to reply, he walked back to his friends, a happy face masking all the emotions he was truly hiding from the world.

"What did he just say?" Poppy was thrilled, even though she couldn't understand a single word in the conversation, apart from "Lily". Her Japanese was only basic, and Ryuu was speaking a little to quickly for her to catch on.

I had to explain to Poppy what I told Ryuu. Gosh, language barriers are things that affect business in an ever growing world like this. Even if English is the so-called international language, there would always be a language barrier somewhere.

She squealed in absolute excitement in my apartment. "Oh my gosh, Nagisa! I'm taking back what I said! You may not be able to catch all the waves but this heart is the most realistic goal ever!"

I shook my head. "I have a feeling he already has someone else. Someone I can never compete with. This is a heart that's not for my taking."

Poppy fell silent too, at a slight loss of words. Unfortunately, "silence" was never Poppy's middle name so she shrieked all of a sudden.

"Or, you can make him fall for you! He might be interested in you! Why would he even meet you if he has zero interest! I see sparks flying everywhere!"

I sighed at her enthusiasm. At four-fifty, Poppy and I left the apartment. Poppy had to go meet her parents and me, meeting Ryuu. Poppy winked and mouthed "Call me" once we part ways.

I walked towards the swing and I couldn't help but notice Ryuu sitting there, a sloth by his side.
