Chapter 14: Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge

Start from the beginning

I kinda expected that this would be it, but nope. . . as we both settled comfortably in the heap of pillows and blankets, Vic pulled out a bottle of sparkling wine and a bag of chips, along with his iPad that had a previously downloaded movie on it. It was Wayne's World, which was apparently his favorite.

"I knew I forgot something." Vic then murmured as he looked around. "I totally didn't bring glasses for the wine."

I chuckled a little and took the bottle from his hands. "Oh please, we were all taught to drink from the bottle when we were babies." I simply pointed out, twisting off the cap before putting the neck to my lips and taking a swig of the wine.

Vic laughed and shook his head in amusement. "Very classy."

We casually sat around and watched the movie as our surroundings became dark. I never expected this as a date, but I can't say that I didn't like it. It was quite enjoyable. Sure, you could also just stay at home and sit on the couch to watch a movie, but this was actually really nice.

By the end of the movie Vic had subtly managed to wrap his arm around my shoulder. I wasn't complaining though, so I took the gesture as a hint to get comfortable by resting my head on his chest.

"So, tell me about yourself." He then suggested. "I wanna know more about the life of Maxine Dawson."

I snorted lightly. "I thought I told you not to call me that." I warned him as I poked him in the side. He just laughed and tightened his arm around me. "Besides, that is a very personal question, sir."

"Oh come on—" Vic pleaded. "You always make jokes about your past, but I can tell there's more to it. I'm not stupid, you know? I see the hurt."

I rolled my eyes and sighed a little, propping myself up on my elbow to look him in the eye. This wasn't really the type of conversation I wanted to have at a date. "Are you a therapist on the side or something?" I asked him blankly. "Because if you are, I am inclined to tell you that I do not have health insurance and my only way of paying you is by acts of sexual nature."

Vic grinned a little and shook his head. "You know that I didn't mean it like that." He said as his eyes gently roamed around mine. He reached his hand up to my face, removing a lock of hair from my eyes and tucking it behind my ear before leaning in to press his lips to mine.

I sighed a little but kissed him back anyway. I couldn't be mad at him for wanting to know more about me. I mean- he already had to find out about Kyle in kind of an awkward way. I definitely wasn't hiding anything else though, if that's what he thought.

Vic slowly pulled away from the kiss and pulled me towards him again, covering the both of us with one of the many blankets. "Alright, I'll start." He then said.

"My mama's name is Vivian, my papa's name is Victor and I was named after him. As you already know, I have a younger brother called Mike. He's basically a rapper and gets high all the time. Our family is pretty close, though, and we had a pretty average childhood. We were brought up catholic, but neither my brother nor I held onto that. I was always the school nerd and he was the troublemaker, but occasionally he'd drag me into said trouble. It was fun though.

When I was 18 I finished high school and got my driver's license. I met up with this lady behind a Walmart and that was when I bought this baby. She said she needed the money to put her son through college, so as gullible as I was, I gave her more than she asked for in the first place. And after that, I went into college to study graphic design."

I snorted softly. "Did said 'lady' have bleach blonde hair and basically look like a run down hooker?" I asked Vic curiously.

He frowned for a moment and then nodded. "Yeah, I suppose she did."

"Well congratulations, you met my mother." I then told him while finally laughing. "Though I can assure you, she does not have a son and that money did not go to college. Heck, I didn't even get to finish high school. That money went straight to heroin."

Vic chuckled a little. "Wow- that's uh- yeah that's definitely something."

"Yeah, well anyway. . ." I then began telling as our laughter died down. "That was my mother, and her name is Janet. She's a hooker, an addict and basically crazy. I have no clue who my father is, but hey who knows, maybe I was named after him too. I lived most of my life in trailers, motel rooms and the back of this truck until, when I was 10; my mom suddenly claimed it was stolen. Which we both now know is not true. I dropped out of high school, did some shitty things, became a teen mom, lost custody because the kid's father made it look like I was an uncontrollable drug addict, and now I'm trying to get my life back together."

Vic stayed quiet, almost as if he was expecting more. But roughly, that had been the majority of my life. There wasn't all too much more to it than that. So I moved away a little and looked up at him. "If you want to end this now, I totally get it." I said to him with a bit of a concerned frown on my face.

His eyes flicked up to mine and he immediately shook his head. "No- not at all. I was just thinking, that's all. It sounds like you had a pretty tough life."

I couldn't help but to smile a little. I was completely prepared for Vic to just end it right then and there. But he didn't, and that actually made me really happy.

We did however decide to leave right after that conversation, though. But only because it was getting late and starting to get a little chilly. Even the blankets didn't help anymore.

Vic drove down the hill when the truck suddenly began sputtering and suddenly it died down completely. "You've got be fucking kidding me." Vic murmured as he gripped onto the steering wheel a little tighter. "Fourteen years I've had you, not once did you break down. . . and now you decide to do it?"

Smoke began to erupt from the front of the truck and I couldn't help but to laugh a little. "Betsy must've smelled my blood and thought it was my mother. Three cheers for sweet revenge- we can walk back to your place now." I mused as I climbed out of the truck.

"Oh hell no." Vic stated firmly as he got out as well and grabbed his phone. "I am so calling a cab." He then held his phone in the air and circled a few times. "If I had any service to call one, that is."

I rolled my eyes, laughing a little, feeling glad that I never had to rely on a phone at all. I used to have one of those flippy things, but then it broke and I never got a new one.

"Let's just walk, Fuentes. It can't be all that far."

Vic stuffed his phone back into his pocket and locked up the car before we both left. I could tell he was a little annoyed, so I just grabbed his hand and laced my fingers with his. Luckily, that made him smile and it was exactly the reaction I had hoped for.

"Despite what just happened, did you enjoy the date?" He then asked after a moment of silence.

"Oh yeah, totally. This goes straight to the top of my list of best first dates."

Vic narrowed his eyes at me but smiled anyway. "I'm not sure if that's sarcasm or if you're being serious with me." He murmured in amusement. "The first time I took Lindsay out on a date I took her to a five star restaurant, bought her flowers, ordered the most expensive wine they had and I was flat broke for the rest of the month."

"Well in that case. . ." I started, earning an immediate worried look from Vic. "This was literally the best first date ever."

His face relaxed again and turned into a satisfied smile as we made our way out of the forest. "Good, because I honestly am serious about us."
