-Brooklyn-
I sprinted down the hall turning corners to reach the big silver doors leading to the elevator.
My eyes burned and I felt like crying but I knew I wasn't gonna.
I pressed the up button repeatedly waiting for the all too familiar ding that revealed that it was on the floor.
However that sound never came.
I sighed in defeat sprinting to the stairs and up 8 flights to get to the children's ward.
When I reached it I swung the door open.
"Miss!" I heard in the distance but I ignored it. "Miss! You need to stop running!" Tuning her out I ran to the waiting room and straight into Cam's arms.
At his touch I began to sob.
His arms wrapped around me and swung us back and forth.
He stuffed his face in my neck.
I pulled away looking into his eyes.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Sh-she was driving home and she got these stomach pains. She assumed it was cramps so she g-got home but she collapsed."
"W-what?" I asked.
"Her f-father found her and called 9-1-1. I went downstairs to get some fresh air when I saw them wheel her in."
I sighed.
"They're running tests now."
Her father came up behind us.
"Her mother is driving in from Tulsa. She was there for business."
We nodded.
"No offense but Brooklyn shouldn't you be with your mother?" Her father asked.
I searched my head for a valuable excuse but unfortunately came out with nothing.
I opened my mouth waiting for words to come out.
He held his hand up and motioned to the stairs.
"Go." He demanded. "She'll be fine."
I looked at Cam and he looked at her dad.
"You too son." He said. "I'll wait for her mother and I'll call you the minute we get some news I promise."
He looked hurt.
Like he was holding back tears.
I nodded.
He probably wanted to be alone to let his emotions out and sort through them and he couldn't do that with two teenagers standing there.
We walked away and towards the stairs.
Cam grabbed my hand as we ascended up the stairs in sync.
"I'm scared." I admitted upon reaching the top.
"About what?"
"Like facing them, facing everyone."
"I'll be right here Brooke." He assured me.
I opened the door and step by step down the hall that lead to my mothers room, the one I had left moments ago.
I entered the room and looked around.
I took a deep breath as Cam's arm wrapped around me.
We began to walk to the back of the semi private room where my mothers bed was placed.
She was sleeping soundly machines hooked up to her everywhere.
I felt myself tear up but I quickly shoved it down.
I hated seeing her like this.
"The doctors said to let her sleep as much as she can." Leo  explained.
"She should be tired from surgery and all the medicine they put in her."
I nodded barely listening.
My mother was here in a medically induced coma basically and my best friend was somewhere in pain and my boyfriend is gone.
I looked around me and noticed Cam standing there.
His arms were crossed as he stared down at me.
"Something interesting?" I smirked.
He blushed lightly as he continued to look at me.
He shook his head no.
"In that case I'm gonna go get some fresh air." I said.
I began to walk away but stopped when I didn't feel the familiar warmth of Cam's body behind me.
I raised my eyebrow at him.
"Uh-Yeah-Me too."
I giggled at his awkwardness as he followed me out the door.
"Is your car here?" I asked.
He nodded intwining his hand in mine and leading the way.
He seemed to know that I wanted to go somewhere where I couldn't be disturbed by doctors or nurses or sympathetic family members.
He unlocked his car as we approached it and I opened the back seat door climbing in.
He started the engine before joining me in the back.
I slid closer to him and he wrapped his arms around me bringing me in for a warm embrace.
I let tears fall down my cheeks as small sobs escaped my slightly parted lips.
He rubbed my back up and down in a soothing way his soothing voice caressing my heart in a way no one else's could.
"I'm sorry." I whispered as I calmed down.
"Don't be." He whispered.
"Brooke-" He paused taking a deep breath.
"What?" I asked lifting my head up and looking at him.
"Never mind." He shook his head.
"Cam you can tell me anything." I whispered. I brought my hand to his cheek and caressed it with my thumb.
"You know that."
He shook his head no again.
"Cam..."
"It's nothing!" He exclaimed.
"But Cam!" I exclaimed back.
He took a deep breath mumbling four words I never thought I would hear come out of his mouth.
"I love you, okay?"
I sat back taking a deep breath.
"See Brooke!" He exclaimed.
"What?" I asked biting my lip.
"I didn't want to tell you! And this is exactly why!"
"I didn't say anything!" I defended.
"Exactly Brooke and I didn't want to tell you but you're so damn persistent!" He yelled.
I put my head down fiddling with my hands.
He sighed heavily looking down.
"I'm sorry Cam." I whispered.
"It's not your fault." He croaked.
I bit my lip as tears fell freely down my cheeks.
"No no!" He said wrapping his arms around me again. "Don't cry!"
"I'm not crying." I whimpered. "My eyes are just sweating a lot." He chuckled.
"There's my Brooke." He said quietly.
"Cam." I whimpered.
"Yeah?" He whispered.
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For not loving you."
He took a deep breath.
"It's okay." He said. "I'm the one who let you slip away."
We sat in silence for a few more minutes before my phone rang.
I picked it up pressing it to my ear.
"Hello?"
"Brooklyn-" It was Chloe's father.
"We've received some information on Chloe."
"I'll be right up." I replied.
I put my phone in my pocket and began to open the door.
"Where are you going?" Cam asked turning to face me.
"I'll be right back I'm going to see how
Chloe's doing."
I brought him in for a big hug.
"I'll always be here for you." I whispered.
"I know." He whispered.
I pulled away and opened the door.
"I'll let you know what happens." I said.
He nodded getting out and getting back in the drivers seat.
I walked back into the hospital.
Everyone else seemed to fade away as step after step I walked back into that dreary place.
The only sound I could hear was the sound of my boots hitting the floor with every step I took.
I approached the elevator and they dinged opening on a distraught boy.
He ran his hand through his hair and looked into my eyes for one second.
His eyes were tear filled as he said something and continued walking out of the elevator shoving his way past me.
I grabbed my arm glaring at him as he walked past me.
I stepped in the elevator pressing the button and riding the floor up to where Chloe was.
I walked up to the Nurse's Station placed in the middle of the floor.
"Chloe Newman."
The lady looked to be in her mid fifties. Maybe sixty.
She had grey roots that faded away into her auburn hair that ended just above her shoulders.
She had circle glasses resting on her nose as she sorted through papers placed in front of her.
She pushed them down using her fingertips and looked up from them her
blue eyes meeting my hazel ones.
"And you are?"
"Brooklyn." I responded simply.
She looked through her files.
"Are you family?"
"No-" I immediately regretted as I had said it. Of course they were only letting family members in and I had just ruined any chances I had of getting in that room.
"Sorry." She smiled sympathetically.
"You don't understand." I said. "I need to get in there."
"Sorry hun the answer's no."
I groaned turning on my heels and resolving to try and find the room myself.
I started at the end of the hallway.
I peeked in the room trying to not be noticed.
A little boy with no hair lay in a bed.
A woman who I'm assuming was his mother was holding his hand.
Tears ran down her cheeks.
I walked away instantly feeling sorry for the mother and son whom I didn't even know.
I walked on to the next room peeking in and finding a little girl laying in a bed.
A teenage boy about our age was sitting at her bedside.
Her small hand was placed in his large ones.
He ran a hand through his hair and glanced backwards right at me.
I quickly looked away.
"Hey!" He yelled.
He walked up to the door and I got nervous.
My heart pace increased as I walked away.
"Hey!" He repeated.
He grabbed my arm spinning around to face him.
"Listen I'm sorry I wasn't trying to spy on you I was just looking for-" I began rambling but he cut me off.
"I ran into you earlier didn't i?"
I looked down taking a moment to think.
That's where I knew him from.
"Listen I'm sorry I was just-"
"It was fine. You were fine." I assured him. "You were going through a tough time I get it."
"It's just-" He ran a hand through his hair and sighed.
"Why am I telling you this your a complete stranger.." He began to talk himself down.
"N-no it's fine!" I exclaimed.
"We're all here for a reason." I explained.
He took a deep breath looking down.
"My sister-" He began. "She's in that room." He pointed to the room he had previously been in.
I nodded in an understanding way.
"I know it's not ideal but do you want to come in?" He asked.
"I-"
His face looked like that of a puppy.
Like he'd been stuck in the room for ages and was dying for someone, anyone, to come in.
"Sure..."
I gave in willingly but wasn't planning to stay long.
I just couldn't say no to that face.
He ushered me forward and into the room.
I took in my surroundings upon entering.
The flowers intricately placed in a glass vase on her end table, the duffel bag sitting in the corner with a teenage boys clothes thrown carelessly on top it, the pungent smell of cologne that was oddly comforting.
But nothing could compare to the sickly little girl laying in the bed. Tubes came from every part of her body.
I looked away not being able to take in the horrid sight any longer.
"You can leave if you want."
"No, no I'm not gonna I promise I've just been through a lot today."
"Haven't we all,...." He muttered.
"I never even told you my name." I said.
I held out my hand. "Brooklyn."
"Tyler."
"Nice to meet you." We said in unison.
"So if you don't mind me asking,.." He trailed off.
"My mother is on the cancer floor. Kidney cancer has apparently officially taken over more than just her kidneys."
"Shouldn't you be with her?" He asked.
"I should but she's probably knocked out or getting tests done and I couldn't stand to be near my grandmother and father anymore."
"So then why are you on the children's floor?" He asked.
He walked over to the corner grabbing another chair and motioning for me to sit on it. I did as he wished and sat down across from his seat that sat inches away from the edge of the hospital bed.
"Apparently the universe really wants me here." I explained.
"And whys that?" He asked.
"Because my best friend is on this floor somewhere."
He looked down.
"I'm sorry."
I looked down taking a deep breath and then looking back at him.
"What about you?"
"This is my sister." He motioned to the little girl. She came here for stomach pains about a month ago and no one knows what it is."
"That's bull crap!" I exclaimed jumping out of my seat.
He chuckled lightly offering me a warm smile. "Tell me about it."
"Today they told me that whatever she has might not ever go away which I kind of figured because they couldn't figure out what it was in the first place but-" he paused for a moment. "-hearing it come out of the doctor's mouth assured my fear and that is one thing I didn't want."
I nodded placing my hand on his thigh.
We spent the next hour or so getting to know each other. I hadn't even realized how late it was getting.
"Heard anything about Chloe?" he asked.
I shook my head no.
"Come on."
"What where?" I asked.
"We're gonna get you into see Chloe no matter what it takes."
I smiled knowing I had just made a great friend.
I took his hand and he led me on a mission to see my best friend.
-Later-
Tyler led me to a closet down the hall.
Inside we found doctors overcoats and name tags.
I took a white overcoat as did he and we each took a name tag.
Mine said "Dr. Grossman."
His said "Dr. Ratchet."
I laughed as we looked over each other.
"You don't look like a doctor." He stated.
"Um thanks?" I questioned.
"No, no!" He exclaimed.
"Just put your hair up."
I did as he said the result being a messy bun.
"Perfect."
We walked out, our steps synchronized.
He grabbed a clip board looked it over.
"I found her." He whispered.
He nodded to the nurse at the desk as he led me to Chloe's room.
The glass doors slid open revealing several beds.
The one in the middle contained a short blonde girl.
Tubes were coming out of her everywhere.
If she wasn't my best friend I probably wouldn't have recognized her.
Tears brimmed my eyes as I walked closer to her bed.
"C-Chlo?" I croaked.
Her eyes fluttered open at the sound of her name.
She smiled weakly.
It looked like she hadn't slept in forever.
"How are you?"
"I think hell ran me over." She croaked.
I laughed slightly sitting at her side.
"Who's that?" She asked.
"Um..." I thought about the question. "That's Tyler he's a friend."
He nodded lifting his hand to wave.
"Hi." She croaked lifting her hand as well.
"Do you know what happened?" I asked.
"I th-think my appendix exploded."
"Is that bad?" I asked.
"It can be." She responded.
I stayed silent for a few more moments.
"I told you I felt it in my gut." She responded.
I laughed slightly playing with a strand of her hair.
"How'd you even get in here?" She asked.
"That's for me to know and you to find out." I tapped her nose with my finger and walked out of the room.
Tyler followed in my wake as we walked back to the closet and got changed.
"Nice talking to you." I said.
"Your leaving?" He asked.
"I'm sure you'll see me again." I responded.
I leaned forward and whispered something in his ear that only he could hear and walked away.
