Arriving at the stadium, Jenna sits down a couple of rows away from the dugout. She takes off her sunglasses, sliding them in her purse and looking out onto the field. She lays her eyes on Shawn, warming up and throwing the ball around with the pitcher. They head into the dugout a few minutes later since they are batting first. Her eyes focus on Shawn, watching him lean against the railing, chewing on what she assumes is sunflower sees and mingling with other players.
"Hey Rhosen!" she bellows, waiting for him to turn around. "You suck!" she grins. Shwan whips around, winking at her and getting back to his conversation.
Throughout the course of the game, it is close. Shawn gets a few RBIs and some clutch throw outs at bases. Jenna makes it her mission to cheer at all times. A tall blonde catches her eye, looking over and seeing Stephanie clicking her heels in Jenna's direction.
"Hey," Jenna greets, sitting up in her chair.
"Hi," she returns the smile. "Do you want to come down closer to the dugout with me?"
"Uh yeah sure," Jenna agrees, getting up and following behind. Seeing the chipped paint on the top of the dugout box, she sees Shawn once again leaning against the railing. Taking a seat where Stephanie instructed, she watches the action unfold in the game. The inning ends, music begins to play, signaling the seventh inning stretch.
"Hey," she smiles, moving to the steps next to the dugout and leaning down a bit toward Shawn.
"You still doing okay?" he asks, leaning up and kissing her cheek.
"Yep. You're playing great. I'm sure they are glad to have you back."
"Yeah," he smiles. "Come here," he nods, holding out his hand to her.
"What?" she looks at him confused.
"Come here," he chuckles, repeating himself--helping her step over the barrier.
"What the hell?" Jenna mumbles, feeling his fingers link with hers.
"I was allowed to show you something for a second," Shawn says, walking out of the dugout and over to the home plate. Jenna is wearing a jersey with his name and number on it.
"Show me what? I've seen home plate before," she shakes her head but with a smile. When she pivots on her foot, she sees Shawn down on one knee, a box in hand. She catches her breath when she lays her eyes on the vintage engagement ring. "What are you doing?" she laughs a little.
Shawn begins to talk. "Jenna, I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life falling in love with you more and more every day. You make me laugh till my ribs hurt. I love seeing you with Cora, and I'm glad you came back in my life and you know it's all about the one who calms your storm. Will you continue to rock that jersey like you do and be my biggest fan for the rest of our lives?"
"Get up," she says softly, helping him up and hugging him tightly. She feels his arms around her and bringing her into an embrace. "You know I will you dork," she whispers into his ear, kissing his cheek.
"Can I put this on your finger?" he asks, showing her the breathtaking ring once more.
"It's beautiful Shawn," she sighs as he slides it on her finger effortlessly.
"She said yes!" the announcer shouts over the microphone.
"Oh my god," Jenna hides her face in his neck, hating to the center of attention. Shawn leads her back to the dugout and out of sight for at least the time being. After giving Shawn one final peck on the lips, she makes her way down the tunnel towards the locker room with a security guard, watching the rest of the game in there. The Blue Jays pulled away with a 6-2 win, Shawn having two homers, four thrown out bases and three RBIs.
While waiting for Shawn, Jenna looks down at her phone, her best friend back in BC calling in. "Hey," she answers.
"I just saw the game. Oh my gosh! Congratulations!"
"Thank you," Jenna smiles, running her thumb across the ring on her finger.
"Were you shocked?"
"That he did it at his game? Yes. That he did it? No."
"Well I mean are you happy? You don't sound too thrilled for a woman that just got engaged."
"Yes," Jenna chuckles. "I'm very happy. I would have been happy with him regardless."
"Well, now you guys get to live happily ever after. He's your high school sweetheart right?"
"Preschool, middle school, high school," Jenna smirks.
"When are you going to start popping out kids?"
"Don't," Jenna says quickly.
"You guys would make adorable babies."
"Yeah, we would. He has Cora. She's enough."
"You don't want a baby of your own? With his good genes?"
"I'm sure one day it will happen. Why do you want me to start popping out babies? Have some of your own."
"Because I know you want a big family."
"That's not true. I said I wanted a family and I'll have that with Shawn and Cora."
"Okay Jenna," her friend says.
"I'll call you later," Jenna hangs up and flips through her phone, waiting for Shawn. Her head snaps up a couple of minutes later and sees him walk out of the locker room, hair still wet in some jeans and a shirt. "Hey," she says, sliding her sunglasses on top of her head.
"Hey baby," he answers. "Ready to go?"
"Mhm," Jenna gets up, following him. "My girlfriend wants us to have kids as soon as possible."
"She does huh?"
"Mhm. Lots and lots of them."
"Like ten? Is that a good number?" Shawn smirks, climbing in the rental car.
"Oh god no," Jenna shakes her head.
Chuckling to himself, the two head back to the hotel. When they arrive back, Shawn has a message and a missed FaceTime call from Cora but the message telling him congratulations.
"Shawn?" he hears Jenna, kicking her shoes off and unbuttoning the buttons on the jersey.
"Hmm?"
"How many kids do you want?"
"I'd be fine with one more," he shrugs.
"You'd be fine, or you'd be happy?"
"I'd be happy," he smiles.
"What if," Jenna begins to say, stopping and taking a breath. "What if I can't?"
"What do you mean?"
"After everything, what if I can't give you children?"
"Baby people have kids after miscarriages."
"I know."
Shawn sighs, "I know you've been having a hard time since the miscarriage."
"It's okay but what if it's me and I can't have kids?"
"You can always go to the doctor and get that confirmed."
"I know, but part of me doesn't want to know."
"Well, we'll not use protection, and you can get off your birth control, and if it happens, it happens. If it doesn't, it doesn't."
"We never use protection, and I haven't been on birth control for months," she informs, looking down.
"We can always adopt," Shawn suggests.
"Okay," she says, getting even quieter.
"What are you thinking?"
"Nothing," she answers, laying down on the bed. "This ring is beautiful," she coos, holding up her hand and looking at it.
"I've had it for months."
"Isn't it your grandmother's?"
"It is," he nods.
"Your mom showed it to me when we were in high school."
"Well, now it's yours. And maybe one day we can pass it down to Cora or your daughter."
"Maybe."
"You hungry or anything?"
"Not really I had food at the park," she answers, looking at the clock and seeing it's eleven-thirty.
"Okay," he yawns, his phone ringing and informing him of an incoming FaceTime call. "Hey princess," he answers, Cora's portrait coming into view. "What are you doing?"
"Going to bed daddy. It's late."
"Yeah, you are up late. Dad leaves the area and you and grandma party huh?" he winks at his daughter.
"Mhm, we had pizza and ice cream."
"You're on a sugar high kid."
"Did you hear what your daddy did tonight?" Jenna chimes in.
Cora shakes her head.
"Jenna and I are getting married," Shawn says, Jenna showing the little girl the ring.
"Really?!" Cora squeals.
"Mhm, really princes. Are you okay with that?"
"So does this mean you're gonna be my mom?"
"I'm going to be your stepmom. I'd never try to replace your real mom sweetheart."
"No, you are my mom," Cora shrugs.
"Alright princess, we'll talk about it when I came back okay?" Jenna states.
"Okay," Cora cracks a missing tooth smile.
"Cora you need to go to sleep."
"Daddy, no. Gramma says I can stay up."
"Where is grandma?"
"In her room sleeping."
"I think you need to go to sleep," he winks.
"Daddy noooo, it's a late night. Gramma said."
"Okay, well we're going to get some sleep. Dad's tired."
"Daddy," Cora whines.
"What babe?"
"I want to stay up. Stay up with me."
"Mm okay," he says closing his eyes. "But if I fall asleep you can't be mad at me."
"Daddy don't be boring."
"Daddy just played a game. You're tired when you play games right?"
"But daddy I haven't seen you in ages," Cora pouts.
"We have to be a little quiet okay? Jenna's asleep," he nods to the woman laying beside him.
"Is she mad I said she was going to be my new mommy?"
"Of course not. Why would you think that?"
"She seemed mad."
"I think she doesn't want you to feel like she's replacing your mom Janelle."
"But she's going to be around and she's nicer and doesn't smell funny."
"Smell funny?" Shawn laughs.
"Yeah, mom usually smells funny when I see her."
"Do you miss her? Be honest," he asks.
Cora shrugs. "I dunno. Gramma says she's my momma and I have to love her. She wasn't really aorund though and I don't remember a lot about her."
"Well I think you'll love having Jenna as a mom."
"Me too," Cora nods. "Go to sleep daddy," she giggles as Shawn dozes off.
"I'll see you tomorrow okay?" Shawn says, watching Cora nod then hanging up.
