"Okay so we've bought four books, three pairs of shoes, a couple of hoodies, two shirts, three blouses, a set of metallic brush pens, a sketchbook, a small pizza, and a cola flavored Slurpee. Need anything else until you eventually agree to do this with me?" He asked, laughing as he stared down at the shopping bags he was holding. "I mean, what else could you possibly want?"

You.

"Damn, when you put it that way, it sounds like I'm abusing your willingness to do anything in order for me to help you." I said, swirling the straw around in the drink. "Don't worry, I'll pay for half of that when we get home."

"No need. I've literally missed three of your birthdays and four Christmases. Think of this as an advanced thank you gift as well as belated presents for those occasions."

"Shawn, this is literally too much."

"Think of it as an 'I'm sorry for not being there' gift." He said as we both took a seat on one of the benches by the fountain.

"Shawn-"

"All throughout the years when I barely even got to say a single word to you or even smile at you in acknowledgement, you still made an effort to try and keep the friendship alive. I know you've secretly been giving gifts to Aaliyah to sneak into my room during my birthday and even Christmas Eve. I never really got a chance to thank you for that or even made an effort to do so."

"It's really okay, Shawn."

"No, it's not."

I didn't know how to react. Apparently, everything I try to say will only fall on deaf ears as he tries to counter them with his self-loathing. I could only wrap an arm around him and place my head on his shoulder. I felt him move his head and press his lips against my hair.

"Shawn?" An annoying, high pitched voice called as the ticking of heels got louder and closer.

"Shit. Can we run?" He whispered.

I looked up and saw her getting closer by the second. I let my arm slip and sat up straight, pulling against the sleeves of my gray cardigan. "Too late."

"Shawn we need to talk. I know what you saw earlier and I promise you that you're the only one I want." She said, looking down at him with a pout that was supposed to make him feel sympathetic towards her. Her eyes then shifted to me and scowled. "Um,  move away, peasant. This conversation is between only me and him."

"She's not going anywhere, Sid." He said protectively, putting some of the bags down onto the floor in front of him and wrapping that free arm around my waist, pulling me closer to him.

"Oh my gosh! I just kissed a guy and now you're basically going out with one of the losers? Did you even love me anyway?"

"Oh, trust me, I never did. I've been looking for an opportunity to dump you and escape your crew. After all, I had no say in this relationship. You always found a way to make it all about you. Besides, this girl right here is more than deserving of my attention instead of you."

"Ugh! Says the guy who was tearing up earlier!"

"Those were tears of joy, Sid."

He stood up, taking the bags from the floor and turning to me, nudging his head to the side. I stood up as well and held onto his arm. He looked back up her with a smirk, clearly enjoying the look of complete and utter shock.

"Now if you'll excuse us." He said as we walked past her.

"Who knew that the captain of the hockey team will also be as cold as the ice he skates on?!" She yelled as we made our way to the exit.
