"i promise you don't need to be concerned about your son," phil started the conversation with. dan had excused himself to the bedroom, phil saying he'll be up in a little bit after he finishes his drink.

"i don't think we were too worried. he seems extremely happy with you," dan's mum laughed. his dad cracked a smile and phil felt the nerves all over again. he had worked up the courage when dan was in the room because dan made him feel like he could do anything, but now that his other half wasn't by his side everything seemed to crumble.

"yeah," phil nervously chuckled. "i decided i wanted to be traditional tonight, no matter how untraditional our relationship really is, and i was wondering if i would have your permission to ask dan to marry me."

they both looked a little shocked at first, but dan's dad quickly put himself together before smiling, "i know you're hoping for a traditional answer, but whether or not you marry dan is not up to us and is entirely on him. i appreciate the gesture, though, and i can speak for both of us when i say that we are glad that dan found someone like you."

phil let out a relieved breath, "thank you. i was worried you were about to say no then."

"we couldn't possibly say no when dan is so happy," dan's mum said with a smile. "i know that he would say yes even if you didn't have ring. do you know when you want to ask?"

"not really, no. i just wanted the reassurance that it was actually going to happen."
