My best friend dangled by her neck in Gaea's hand.

My dad's trident was in the other.

The rest of the Seven are dead and the gods are captured.

Gaea cackled. "Make your choice. Kill your father or condemn your friend."

My jaw clenched. I looked at Annie, struggling to free herself.

Then I looked at Dad who was staring at me.

I looked between the two of them.

"Percy!" Dad yelled.

I closed my eyes a tear trailing down. "I'm sorry."

I looked at Dirt Face.

She smiled. "Just kill your father and then your friend is free to go." She threw the trident at my feet.

I picked it up and walked over to my dad whose eyes were wide.

"Percy. No." He said quietly.

"I told you so!" Athena yelled struggling in her chains.

"We should have killed her when we had the chance!" Guess who?

I pressed the tip of the trident to my dad's throat. He swallowed causing a bead of ichor to form.

"Percy. Why are you doing this?" Apollo asked.

"I'm sorry." I said again.

"I understand. I love you Percy." Dad said gently.

"Get on with it!" Gaea yelled.

"I'm sorry." Tears fell down my face.

I channeled my power through the trident causing it to glow.

Gaea cackled.

"I'm sorry." I whispered as I fired the energy beam.

Straight at the chains binding my dad.

They melted into water and I forced the trident into Dad's hand.

He got over his initial shock and freed the others.

Gaea threw Annie to the side and howled in rage.

"Annie!" I ran towards her but I knew I wasn't fast enough.

She hit the ground with a sickening crunch.

I reached her side only to see her spine was definitely broken.

"Percy-" she coughed. "You made the right choice Seaweed Brain. And it was a good plan. Even if it didn't work."

I was vaguely aware of the ground rumbling as Gaea was killed.

Annie coughed up blood. "It wasn't your fault. Never was. I don't want to see you for a long time."

"Annie, we're gonna see each other at breakfast tomorrow. And your pancakes will drown."

She chuckled lightly. "We both know that's not happening. I'll miss you Seaweed Brain. But I'll wait."

With that her eyes fluttered close and a final breath left her body.

"Annie!" I screamed and I pulled her body to me.

I sobbed and begged her to come back. To wake up. To not leave me.

I buried my face in her neck, the warmth already leaving her.

I felt hands pull me away and I fought to stay with my best friend's body.

Gently the same hands pried me off of Annie.

Dad turned me towards him and his eyes softened.

He pulled me towards him in a hug and rubbed my back, attempting to soothe me.
