Life of Fire

From the ashes
A fire rises to dance
Twisting body and flicking lashes
Roaring to life with a gust of wind
Through torrents of rain
It's strength won't give in
And when the fuel is running low
Starved for life
The wind refuses to blow
Like a tree hangs on
Through winter and snow
The fire won't let in
Cruel waters flow
Though time takes its toll
Beats down its youth
To swallow it whole
Extinction's steady creep
Flames lie down
On their way to sleep
Desparate embers want to grow
Trying to relive
Its youthful glow
But there's a drain in the air
And in walks time
Takes away its will to climb
Nothing to hold onto
Ember turns to smoke
And the ashes are taken
By the roots of the oak
