Chapter 13

Tiffany's point of view

I close my eyes and let sleep wash over me. I'm a cloud, miles above the world, and if I look down below I'll fall into darkness. Suddenly I bolt upright in bed, screaming. "Mom! Dad?"

They don't answer, because they are no longer here.

Tears are running down my face, and I frantically reach for my phone. My sisters are asleep in their own rooms and I don't want to wake them. I type a text quickly.

"Hey Jeff."

His response beeps back.

"Yeah? Tiff are you okay?"

I sniffle. "No."

"OMG What's wrong? Did your house burn down?"

"Yes."

"What? Are you serious?"

"Yeah. Lindsey, Ashley, Chelsey, and I are orphans now."

"I'll be right over."

I put the phone aside and got up to get changed. The hotel manager gave us some clothes that people had forgotten in their rooms over the years, so I put on a pretty blue sweater and some faded jeans. Then I took the elevator to wait in the lobby.

Jeff showed up a few minutes later, holding a stuffed bear.

He hugged me tightly. "Tiff, I'm so sorry."

"Me too." I said. "Who is the bear for?"

"It's for you," he said, handing it to me. "I wanted you to have it. Do you like it?"

"I love it. I'll call him Jeffrey."

He stared at me. "Thank you, Tiff. That's so sweet of you."

We hugged again.

"I should go," he said. "But I'll see you tomorrow. Let's have lunch."

I nodded. "I'll miss you."

He kissed me. "I'll miss you more." I pushed him away playfully.

"Nerd," I said.

I'll always love him, even if he is a dork sometimes.
