If things weren't as serious as they were and the threat of losing all three of her friends didn't loom over her head—Astrid would certainly have belly laughed at the stupid looks on her friends' faces. She would have even mocked the way Ron's mouth fell open and nudged Harry too relax, his hands in tight fists.

But she couldn't laugh, if she started now it would end in crying.

"You're all mental" Ron muttered

"Ridiculous!" Added Hermione faintly

Astrid hummed and squeaked a few times—no words could leave her mouth to convince them to believe their story was in fact real

She wondered herself if it was

Scabbers had been just as present in her childhood as he was in Ron's—she played with him everytime she went to the burrow and knitted him a small sweater with daisies on it just last Christmas—hoping he would turn up

And he was not a rat after all—but a man, her fathers friend

"Animagus" Astrid mumbled—hearing nothing of what Hermione was rambling on about

"Right again, Hermione!" Lupin's gentle voice awakened her from yet another daze "But the Ministry never knew that here used to be four unregistered Animagi running around Hogwarts"

Astrid stared at her father—had he always known? How many times since first year had Ron brought Scabbers over and not once had he flinched

She shook her thoughts away "unregistered? that means—she furrowed her eyebrows at Jasper—I'm telling mom"

"Mom already knows" Jaspers voice drifted in song— sticking his tongue out at her

"If you're going to tell them the story, get a move on, Remus" said Black, who was still watching Scabbers's every desperate move "I've waited twelve years, I'm not going to wait much longer"

Astrid nodded in agreement—it was too risky to be missing for as long as they were, surely someone would notice.

"This place is haunted!" Ron said—nodding his head at the door that had creaked twice and rather loudly while they all stood still

"It's not—Lupin looked at the door in a puzzled way—The Shrieking Shack was never haunted, The screams and howls the villagers used to hear were made by me"

"Fenrir Greyback" Lupin shared the story of his childhood—a childhood that ended abruptly by a werewolf bite and returned to him later in life when he started at Hogwarts and met James Potter, Sirius Black, Jasper Clearwater and Peter Pettigrew on the train

The name sent a shiver down Astrid's spine—a name that caused her father to instantly jerk his hand forward, grabbing ahold of her own and squeezing gently
