"Steve," you said as you heard the sound of an aircraft.

He looked at you before looking into the sky where a small dark circle gradually became larger. "That's me," he whispered.

You wrapped your arms around him, feeling wetness from tears. He fought his away from you. "I can stop it. I can save me. (Y/N) I can - " He stopped the moment he saw the look of devastation on your face. He bit his lower lip. "Please. Please. Don't look at me like that. Please."

You couldn't help but cry. Was this life - the one that the two of you shared - not enough for him? Did he need Peggy to make it worthwhile?

"(Y/N)..."

You shook your head. "I know it's selfish, but if you pull him out... Just think about it, Steve. There won't be a you and me. There won't be the Avengers. You don't know what's going to happen - " But before you could finish, he'd left. He'd jumped off the ice sheet you were on and onto the next, and the next, and the next until he was a considerable distance between the ice and the craft that was clearly nosediving.

You didn't know what to do. You ran after him, finding it hard to stop yourself from sliding around.

"Steve! Stop!" you cried.

He stopped, turning back to look at you. You get a couple metres closer. He grit his teeth in fear not anger. You knew it. You knew that he wouldn't chose you.

He turned back around and ran.

You continued to run, feeling your lungs burn and ache. You continued to run, regardless. You new what was going to happen.

He reached the sinking craft and pulled the door off the back before jumping in. You looked at the gap between you and the door. Jump? Die in here?

Your eyes caught a small remote shaped object and you thanked God for it. You picked it up, pocketed it and jumped before pressing the one button that could seal this aircraft.

Steve looked at you. He had the other Steve, unconscious from impact, over his shoulder. He looked at you. "What are you doing in here?" Why was he shouting?

"I'm not leaving you, Steve."

He grit his teeth. "Don't you see it? I don't want you!" He calmed down slightly after his outburst. "I love you, but I love her. I couldn't see it before because I knew we could never be together, but I love her. Not as much as he - previous me - does, but enough to remember how much I miss her everyday. I can't live knowing I could've change it, and I didn't."

It felt like someone had punched you in the gut. "I..."

He wrapped his arm around you, picking you up like a rag doll. He pressed the very same button that had shut the door, and going against the water, he got all of you out, throwing unconscious Steve on the ice the moment he surfaced.

You swallowed hard the moment you got your breath back, your teeth chattering as your body was awakened to the shock of the cold post adrenalin. "So what do we do?" you asked.

He turned to you. "We go back and let him live his life."

You couldn't help but tear up. "And then what?"

"Then nothing."

"Steve, I can't go on like this."

He looked at you, apologetic. "I'm sorry."

You sighed, and with the sound of the other Steve coughing, you grabbed the current Steve's forearm and pressed the button.

You returned, no machine in sight, listening to the sound of footsteps. You both turned to see Tony there. He looked at Steve before turning white. "Why?" he gasped. "This is a hallucination. I'm not seeing this. This is all fake. Go back to bed, Tony. There's no such thing as aliens or people from space, and Captain America is dead." He turned and walked back, leaving the both of you in the darkness.

You let go of Steve's arm.

That was the last time that you were ever together in any time from there on. You mused about how that one moment had changed it all. You never spoke, or saw him again. Call it a messy breakup.

Silently, you parted, the both of you in agreement to let it go.

Hey guys. I'm going through something at the moment so my fics might not be as well written as my thoughts are kind of all jumbled right now. I'll try my best thought! Thank you for your consideration and sorry if that was too sad.
