Chapter 87: Ultimate moves...?

By AsheDragon_Warrior

I posted in a... "cold second." Lmao, sorry. Nothing interesting to say here, just read :)

I wasn't in a much better mood the next morning, for multiple reasons. They were all minor, but they had affected my sleep enough that I was on edge.

I avoided talking to anyone, save for a brief question of "who won?"

Throughout the morning, my mood had improved, and by the time we were in class I was already feeling better.

"I believe I mentioned this yesterday, but for now, Class 1-A of the hero course will be focusing on getting their provisional licenses."

"Yes sir!"

"A hero license bears with it the great responsibility of human life. Of course, the exam to receive on is very difficult. Even the provisional license has only a 50% passing rate each year."

"Just the provisional license is that hard?" Mineta sounded dismayed. Mr, Aizawa's eyes narrowed in response.

"That's why today, we will have each of you come up with at least two..."

At least two... what?

The door to the classroom opened as he finished, revealing the Pro Heroes Cementoss, Midnight, and Ectoplasm.

"...ultimate moves."

Ultimate moves...?

"Ultimate moves?! It's like a real school thing and yet—" Kaminari and Ashido started.

"—It's like a super normal hero thing!" Kirishima and Sero finished.

How in the world can creating "ultimate moves" be considered a normal school thing?!

"'Ultimate'! This means that this move will give you a sure win!" Ectoplasm explained.

"A move so ingrained into your body that others cannot copy it. Battle means seeing how much you can force what you're good at on your opponent."

As Cementoss spoke, I briefly thought back to our exams, when he completely crushed Kirishima and Sato.

"Your moves will represent you. These days, pro heroes without ultimate moves are an endangered species."

"Your moves will represent you"...

"We will tell you more as we go along. We want to proceed logically. Change into your costumes and meet in Gym Gamma."

With that, Mr. Aizawa sent us off.

~

We entered a huge gym with a high, arched ceiling and a cement floor. Windows spanned the walls on either side of us, behind the viewing balconies.

"Gym Gamma, also known as the 'Training Dining Land,' or TDL."

TDL might make a certain mouse mad at us...!

Cementoss knelt to the ground, activating his quirk. "I came up with the idea for these facilities. Terrain and other things can be prepared specifically for each student. That's what the 'dining' part refers to."

That's cool and all... but I still don't get it.

"I see..."

Even Kaminari gets it?!

"Please allow me to ask a question!" Iida's hand shot up. "Why must we have ultimate moves for our provisional licensing exam? Please tell me your reasoning!"

"I'll tell you everything in order." Mr. Aizawa pinned him with a tired stare. "Calm down."

With that, he began his explanation. "The job of a hero is to save people from danger, like crimes, accidents, natural disasters, and man-made disasters. The exam to become one naturally looks at how well you are able to do that. Your ability to gather information, make decisions, move, and fight, in addition to your ability to communicate, draw people to you, and lead. Every year, a different test is used to look at how well you are able to do those things."

Midnight stepped forward, raising a finger. "Of those, your ability to fight is especially important to your futures as heroes. If you are prepared, you won't have to worry. Whether or not you have an ultimate move will greatly affect whether or not you pass."

Cementoss spoke up, "Not being influenced by circumstances and being able to act consistently will make you a great asset on the front lines."

"Your ultimate moves do not necessarily need to be of the attacking type. For example, Iida's Reciproburst. The temporary burst of speed is enough of a threat to be worth calling an ultimate move."

Iida sounded excited by Ectoplasm's praise. "So that's good enough to be considered an ultimate move?"

"I see..." Sato mused, "so we need to find something that allows us to feel like, 'As long as I do this, I have the advantage. I can win.'"

"Exactly!" Midnight winked. "Kamui Woods, who played a big part in the fight the other day—" I flinched imperceptibly at the mention— "has a move called Lacquered Chain Prison that is the perfect example of an ultimate move. It restrains his opponents before they can do anything."

"The training camp was cancelled, but the training you did to develop your quirks was part of the process to create your ultimate moves."

So that's what the suffering was for, Mr. Aizawa. Good to know...

"In other words—" Cementoss activated his quirk once more, and raised platforms of cement rose around us as Mr. Aizawa spoke— "until the beginning of the next semester—" Ectoplasm activated his quirk now, and clones appeared— "for the next ten days or so until the end of summer vacation, you'll be working out your ultimate moves as you develop your quirks. You'll be doing intensive training!"

I glanced around us. I think I get the "dining" thing now...

"In addition, you should think about how you can improve your costumes to work better with your developing quirks. Get through this with a 'Plus Ultra' mentality. Are you ready?"

I'm not sure...

"Yes, sir!"

"I'm getting excited!" Even though I was unsure of what I was going to do, I agreed.

This will be great!

~

Atop of my stone pedestal, I sat cross-legged. I had requested some time to think, and the clone had agreed.

So, I sat with my eyes closed, in thought.

To make an ultimate move, I needed to understand my quirk. My quirks.

But I didn't know what they were.

However, it hopefully wouldn't be too long before I knew. They were supposed to be interrogating All For One and my father, so there was a chance that they'd get some useful information, or —at the very least— a lead or two.

I had my fingers crossed.

For the past 15 or so minutes, I had been focusing to block out the noise around me. But, a shake of my shoulder broke that concentration, and I opened my eyes to see the clone in front of me.

"All Might is calling you. He wants to talk about something."

"All Might? What is he doing here?"

The clone shook its head. "Go down to him, it's important. I'll wait."

"Alright sir."

I made my way slowly down the side of the rock, locating his shock of yellow hair as I went.

At the bottom, he said nothing as I fell into step beside him— he had started walking once I had reached the ground.

Once we were outside, he spoke.

"I've got important news."

Is it what I think it is...?

"And...?"

"I received a call from the station not too long ago. I decided it was too important to you and your training to wait, so I came right over."

I waited, my breath caught in my throat.

"Young (L/N), we've got some leads about your quirk."

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Yesss, another cliffhangerrrrr!

I'm sorry. Today's been a... special sort of day.

Not in a bad way, necessarily, just a... special sort of way.

Moving on, I plan to edit this story soon. I've been collecting corrections and suggestions made by you guys, so thank you all for that!

Quick question: do you think that I should remove the censoring of the "swear" words? So if them aren't even really swearwords, but I'm just not quite sure what to and not to censor. The story has a profanity warning anyways...

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed! Till next time, bai Marshmalløws!

-Cøcøa-Malløw

P.S. Maybe I'm the only one, but every time I see Iguro (the snake hashira) all I can think about is how he's "not wearing his mask properly" lol.
