Chapter 36 - no escape

Start from the beginning

"I think we should talk." He says. I narrow my eyes, now he wants to talk?

"You're kidding right? I think you had plenty of time to do that for the past month." why did I have to sound like such an annoying girlfriend, that was definitely my intention, he averted his gaze to somewhere behind me, so I scoffed knowing this conversation was getting us no where.

"Look just let me put some clothes on and let me talk to you." He pleaded with his drowsy voice. "I feel like we've got some long pending things we need to sort out"

"I promised Andreia I would help her with lunch." I tell him, it was still early to even start thinking about lunch but I would use any excuse to get out of here.

"Melissa it's 10 o'clock." He shot back.

I scoffed. "I'll be downstairs, just find me when you're ready." Might as well get it over with, maybe he'll even end up forgetting about it. I wish he did.

Seeing we finally had come to an agreement he let me go. Making a wave of relief abruptly hit me.

As I headed downstairs, I reached up and tied my hair into a ponytail. I turned the corner and spotted Toni sitting at the counter on his phone. Andreia was at the stove cooking away and the smell of chocolate cake filled the air. Toni looked over at me and smiled.

"Hi Toni." I greeted him.

"Do you know where Mr. Aveiro is? Ricardo told be he's supposed to have a meeting in like 10 minutes." My eyes widened, maybe he forgot about that small detail while he was harassing me into spilling was happened yesterday.

"Yeah.. I..I don't know." I answered, tying the apron strings meeting Andreia's amused gaze but chose to ignore it.

"So how can I help?" I shifted my attention to something else and began seeking things to do.

...

It takes a few minutes before I register that someone is talking to me. And a few more for me to snap out of my nearly catatonic trance.

My eyes have been riveted to the kitchen counter unseeingly, the cutting board of vegetables left untouched. A frown creasing the space between my eyebrows. The erratic rhythm of my heart is no race for the racing thoughts running rampant throughout my brain.

"Everything okay?" Someone asked, soon realizing it was Andreia, a smile creeped to my lips.

"Yeah of course." The knife I had in my hand soon rendered the carrots into the cutest of matchsticks upon the wooden board. Maybe this will get my mind off things.

"You seem distant." she comments trying to look right through my soul. It was strange how absolutely no one knew was happened between me and Cristiano, frustrating must I say. But something told me Andreia was starting to suspect.

The backdoor opened and Cristiano spotted me immediately. His eyes roamed my expressionless face for a few seconds before I averted my eyes somewhere else.

"Sir! You're here! Are we going to leave now?" Ricardo asked, standing up.

"No, I cancelled my meeting, something came up." I couldn't help but connect eye contact with him yet again, he couldn't possibly be talking about me could he?

He walked slowly to the side of the island opposite me. Not only had my breaths turned shallow, my hands were trembling slightly and I couldn't help but wonder how difficult it was to remain still and not fidget.

We stared, neither of us saying anything at first. It felt like the temperature in the room was rapidly rising. I could hear the clock hung up in the wall ticking away the seconds. I couldn't remember ever noticing it before.

"Can we talk now?" He finally spoke, breaking the awkward silence, Toni's eye balls kept traveling between me and Cristiano, evidently confused as to what was happening.

I nodded slowly taking off my apron.

"I'll be back in a sec." Andreia smiled in agreement, I proceeded to exit the kitchen feeling his presence right behind me.

"Let's go into my office." My brain has mentally established that being alone with Cristiano can never be good.

He leads me on to the room and shuts the door, an indecipherable look plastered in his face, his eyes were dark and I tried to return the intensity of his stare but it was practically impossible.

My breath hitched and I sat down, I could feel this was going to be a long talk.

...
Hello everyone, I know I disappeared for a while, but I'm back! I tested positive for covid and my head wasn't really in the mood to write, but I promise I'll update more frequently! Sorry it took so long to post this chapter, but on the bright side, I've organized the plot of the story and it'll be less messy from now on.

Anyways, if you've waited this long and didn't give up thank you lmao <3
