"Xavier... Violet... come down here, please."  I blinked as I heard the concern in my father's deep voice.

I skipped down the stairs and paused as I saw him and my mother whispering to each other.  I watched them, my brother, a carbon copy of our mom.  They both had electric, blue eyes and raven colored hair.  My father, on the other hand, had sandy, brown, wavy hair, his long lashes framed hazel to green eyes.  Xavier could only hope to get our dad's height and muscular build.

I always wondered how they could be my parents, other than Mom's small frame and hair length, my hair was silver with a purple tint.  My eyes were an odd shade of grey that would seem to change colors depending on the light.

They took special care to hide them, using wigs and color contacts to make me look almost normal.  Xavier stumbled down, almost running into me, clearly just waking up.  "Yes?"

They looked up at us and smiled, but it didn't reach their eyes.  Our mother gestured to the seats, and we took them.  "How was your first day?"

I shrugged, and Xavier pouted.  "They picked on me some, but okay otherwise."

Her eyes widened.  "That is horrible, should I ca -"

He shook his head wildly.  "That'll make it worse.  It'll pass. It always does."

Our father turned his gaze to me.  "And you?"

I shrugged again.  "Another school, another set of people to ignore until I'm invisible again."

He frowned.  "So, no issues."

I met his eyes.  "Nothing I can't handle, I assure you."

He grunted, and my mom put a hand on his sleeve.  "Xander..."  He nodded.  "We've been invited to a banquet, and they've requested they you play, Violet."

I frowned.  "Who is they, and why have they requested such a thing?"

She frowned slightly.  "No idea... it was quite sudden.  They... are... our family of sorts."

I tilted my head.  "Of sorts?"

She nodded, and my father took her hand.  "We've tried to keep you two as far from this as possible, but you've drawn someone's attention."  He looked directly at me.  "When they discovered you were our children, they jumped on the chance."

I pursed my lips.  "I've done nothing to draw attention."

He seemed to be trying to draw a truth out of me.  "Nothing?"

I crossed my arms.  "One friend, subpar grades, don't really talk to anyone... unlike your golden child here."

He frowned.  "Yet, you took that test."

I didn't break eye contact.  "Could've just gotten expelled. That would have been the icing on the cake, I'm sure."

He flared his nostrils.  "Violet..."  I tilted my head.  "That calm, cool demeanor is what gets you in trouble."

"Xander..."

"Chloe... what other reason would there be?"

She sighed.  "It can't be helped now.  So, it's in two weeks.  Can you please just keep it tame?"

I frowned.  "Why?"

She took my hands.  "We don't need too much attention. Just tone it down for all of our sakes."

I crossed my arms.  "Whatever..."

My father stood, looking down at us, and my brother automatically averted his gaze while I looked at him through the corner of my eye.  "It's not whatever... keep it simple and stay under the radar."
