They got back on the road and, for a while, everything was quiet. Then, Evelyn suddenly pulled into a Shell gas station with only one visible vehicle in the parking lot. Jasper looked at his aunt, confused. They had enough gas to go on for awhile and they didn't need anymore snacks for some time.
"Evelyn?"
"I can't take you directly to the house, so... This is where we say goodbye. This is where the trail ends."
"You're just gonna drop me off at some stupid Shell station and leave?"
"Well, yes, but-"
"What if I get kidnapped or the police come and find me or the monsters catch up and kill me?"
"I-"
"What am I supposed to do once you leave? Just sit here? Where am I supposed to go? Why didn't you tell me this before?"
"Jasper!"
Jasper jumped and looked at Evelyn with widened eyes.
Evelyn huffed out a breath and shook her head.
"Do you see the vehicle right there?"
Jasper looked where she pointed. It was a rundown little white Jeep Wrangler, the lower half splattered with mud.
"You're going to get in that and the driver will be taking you to your new home. Got it? There's nothing to worry about."
"There's plenty to worry about..."
Jasper mumbled. He opened the truck door and slid out of the vehicle. Evelyn climbed out next and helped him gather his bags. She helped him put them in the back of the Jeep, then grabbed him up into her arms. Jasper hugged her back, squeezing his eyes shut.
"You stay safe, Evelyn... Don't go dying on me."
"Same goes for you, kid..."
Evelyn ruffled her nephew's hair and sniffled.
"Ok... Time to go. The quicker, the better."
She let go of Jasper and pushed him toward the Jeep. Jasper looked at her, but all he got was her back while she went to the truck. She didn't even look back. Just got in and buckled up. Jasper sighed and turned to the Jeep. He looked in at the driver, hoping to see a friendly face, but instead, only finding a figure shrouded in darkness. Their clothing was black and they wore a hood that hid their face well.
Jasper gulped and looked at the truck, but it was already driving off. He was all alone with this stranger. For all he knew, they could be a murderer. But, if that were the case, Evelyn wouldn't have left him with this person.
"You gonna get in, or what?"
