"Do you mind if we stop by my house really quick?" Maya asks.

"Sure."

The drive to Maya's house wasn't far and in the small neighborhood in the outskirts of Hollow Grove. She lived in a very quiet suburban neighborhood that wasn't protected by some security guard.

Maya's family wasn't very rich, in fact the only reason why she went to our school was because she got a scholarship. We reached her small blue suburban house with a cute white picket fence.

"Mami, ¡ya llegué!" Maya yells as we enter the house. (Translation: mom, I've arrived)

"¡Estoy en la cocina!" Maya's mom, Maribeth, yells from the kitchen. (Translation: I'm in the kitchen)

Maya leads the way to the kitchen where I make sure that my sweater covers up my neck to hide any bruises that Ethan had left. I didn't want anyone to be asking questions or probing around about what might've happened to me the night before.

I could smell the spices in the air as Maribeth was cooking something. Once we entered the kitchen, Maribeth was chopping up vegetables and stirring things into the pot. She looks up from her spot and a warm smile grows on her lips.

"¡Angelina!" Maribeth's face brightens as she sees me standing at the entrance of the kitchen.

She walks over to me and wraps her arms around me. The smell of spices that clung to her clothes welcomed me and I felt tears prick in the corner of my eyes. I just wanted to go home and see my parents.

"Hice tu favorito, caldo de pollo ¿Tienen hambre?" She asks. (Translation: I made your favorite, chicken soup. Are you guys hungry?)

"Gracias, pero no tengo hambre," I say. (Translation: Thank you, but I'm not hungry.)

"Después que regrese," Maya says. (Translation: After I return)

Maribeth continues stirring the pot and Maya motions for me to follow her to her room. Her room was right across from the kitchen and she shared it with her younger sister, Marisol.

"Hi, Angie!" Marisol's nine year old voice screeches as she sees me enter the room.

She rushes over and tackles me into a hug.

"Alright, booger, let her go," Maya says. She heads over to her dresser and starts looking for something.

"When are you coming over again? You haven't been here since the beginning of the summer?" Marisol asks.
