at the edge of the cliff

The End

Grayson wasn't kidding.

When we turned onto the road that led to the cliff, he tossed a white bandana into my lap and said "You know what to do." Now I am trusting him to guide me up this cliff without him walking me into a tree or letting me trip and fall on my face.

My foot hits a branch causing me to trip.

"Grayson-" I warn. I feel him behind me, hands on my shoulders, slowly pushing me forward.

"Sorry! I'm sorry." He apologizes but I could hear the chuckle he is hiding. When my body goes forward, I let out a screech, my arms ahead of me ready for the impact. But, not surprisingly, Grayson grabs me and pulls back onto my feet. Or I thought I was going back on my feet.

"What are-" I feel my body being scooped up into his arms as he begins to carry me.

"You're to clumsy for you own good." He mumbles. I basically complain the rest of the time just to get on his nerves. Which probably wasn't the nicest thing because he is taking me on a date, but I'm me and I do those kinds of things. "We're here." He chimes. I was getting annoyed by this blindfold. I have been staring into darkness for like, fifteen minutes.

"Oh my! Wherever could we be?" I say painfully sarcastic, playing along to his pointless "I don't know where I am" game. He chuckles, mumbling something like "just you wait". He sets me down and I instantly feel for his arm, holding on as he pushes me a few steps forward. "Ready?" He asks. My heart stops. The nerves come back.

"No." I say the first thing that comes to mind. I sigh and nod, realizing how stupid I probably look. I feel him untying the blindfold, purposefully going slow. When its removed, it takes a minute for my eyes to adjust back to the light. Except it wasn't as light anymore. The sun was just about to set, causing the sky to be a dim orange color. I look around. There was a small red and white checkered blanket spread out on the ground, the picnic blanket you see in every movie or show. A cute woven basket sat in the center, a pizza hut pizza box sticking out out of it. I let my eyes wander around. The trees that were closer to the edge had lights strung and hung all through the bottom half.

I couldn't help but laugh. But I still was speechless. And really impressed.

"You laughed." Grayson said, underlying worry in his voice. He suddenly appears in front of me bring my attention to him. I laugh again. "Why are you laughing? Do you not like it?" He looks around himself, as if double checking everything. When I realize he is actually kind of freaking out, I grab his hands, interlocking our fingers.

"Gray?" I say. He looks down, his eyes flickering to each of mine. "I'm laughing because its very cheesy and cute. And I love it a lot." I explain. He relaxes and squeezes my hand lightly.

"Okay." He breathes out. "Good." He drops one of my hands and tugs me torwards the picnic all set out. We both sit and I watch with a smile on my face as he pulls out the pizza, followed by two chocolate milkshakes. With such pricisness and caution and opens the box, placing it directly between us before pulling out napkins. "So I got pizza because we both love it and what the hell else are we gonna eat up here?" He says making me laugh. "And I got milkshakes." He continues, handing me one. "And," he pauses. These are some of those moments where I am left breathless and speechless. He stops for a second and just looks in my eyes, through my body, and into my soul. "I have a surprise after." He says quietly. I could only nod. Thankfully he looks away and I can breath again. He gets both of us a slice of pizza. We don't even talk at first because we just sit, eat, and watch the sunset.

It lowers behind the water that was reflecting that warm colors above. The wind lightly blew making it a little chilly. The waves crashed below, hitting the rock. The sun lowered behind the horizon more and more until it disappeared, leaving everything dim.

It was beautiful. And every thing was perfect.

Until I realized that it was over.

Now what?

I felt his eyes. I tensed up and slowly put down the milkshake in my hands. Slowly, I turned towards him, and as predicted, he was already looking at me.

"Your so damn beautiful." He says shaking his head like he couldn't believe it.

You know what I couldn't believe.

The fact that I ended up with a guy like him.

I watch as he scoots over to me and pulls me onto his lap facing him. He continues to stare at me, through me. "What?" I ask.

-No One's Point Of View-

Shay sat on his lap, her heart racing as Grayson stared into her eyes intently. She didn't know what he was going to say, but could tell it was something.

He knew she was over analyzing every little thing that was happening, taking it in in every way, shape, and form.

One of the many things he loved about her.

"What?" She ask, her nose scrunching up in that way that he just loves so much. Her dark hair cascaded around her, her eyes sparkled with so much happiness, nervousness, hope, and fear. He smiled, bringing his hands to her face, cupping it gently.

"I love you." He says. Yes, they have said it before. This time felt different. He felt different. He could see himself fifty years older, sitting in the same spot, with the same girl in his arms, watching the same sun set over and over again. She was it for him. And he had the perfect thing planned to tell her just that.

She found herself speechless at the words, despite him saying it to her before. She couldn't help but smile. And damn, it was a beautiful smile. "I love you too." She nods, more comfirming it too herself than anything. She knew she did; of course she did. How could she not? But there was always that fear, you know? And now, in that moment, she said it without any fear. Any doubt. Nothing but pure love in her mind, body, and soul. Not just for him, but for herself. He manage to get her to love him, and find self love along the way.

He took his hands from her face and reached into the picnic basket beside him. Shay watched him confused, thinking that it was empty. She knew nothing about the tiny velvet box at the bottom; a box that held the surprise.

His hand touched the box and his heart sped up, pounding harder than he ever had before.

He was sure he wanted this, wanted her, but again, there's always that fear.

Yes, he had it to.

He met this random, crazy, badass girl and instantly became terrified of what she did to him. The feelings were foreign, but made him feel the best (and worst) he ever had. She did things to him. He used to stare at the stranger in the mirror, wondering where the old him went. Of course, he thought he died with his brother. But no. He only burried him deep inside, hidden under the feelings of pain and sadness, guilt and fear, and the thought of if he would ever be happy again. He thought he was gone forever. But she found him, brought him into the light to shine. He didn't know how she did it, but was sure glad she did. He wasn't afraid to smile, to be happy. He still got that guilt sometimes though. The thought of him being happy when his brother couldn't be there with him would always be a pain, but now he knew he wasn't alone. He had her. Shit, she even managed to bring him and his parents together once again. He was happy. The happiest he had ever been. All because of this one girl.

He couldn't wrap his head around it.

He finally pulled out the box. Shay sat frozen. She didn't know what to do, what to say. So she sat and waited. Of course, when he pulled out a ring sized box, her initial thought was he is proposing. But he isn't that crazy, is he?

"I'm not proposing." He joked. If only he knew what was going through her head. She managed to get out a little chuckle.

"What exactly are you doing?" Her eyebrow arched, her lips in a playful smirk. This is what they loved about this relationship. When things did get serious, they didn't stay that way for long. It was light, not difficult. They could breath freely without fear of saying or doing the wrong thing. They were. . .them. And they were loved by eachother for it.

He glanced at her before opening the box, revealing a gold ring with an infinite sign on it. She gasped. She couldn't believe what he was doing, even though she didn't fully know yet. "Wh-"

"Its a promise." He inturrupts her, all the right words suddenly coming to him. "It hasn't been that long, but its felt like a lifetime. I- I knew a long time ago that I was completely whipped. Even if I didn't admit it to myself, I knew." He chuckles, remembering all of the late nights arguing with himself on if he had completely fallen for her or not. "I didn't think I deserved you. Still don't. But I know that I couldn't even picture life without you even if I tried." As he said the beautiful words, Shay found herself tearing up the tiniest bit. "You're the only thing that has kept me sane. Kept me. . .me. Kept me happy. And I'm forever thankful." He slowly started to pulled out the ring, taking her hand gently in his. "I wanna promise you that I'll spend every waking moment there for you, protecting you and making you happy. Because I wouldn't be here without you, and you wouldn't be here without me. We're perfect for each other." He slowly slid the ring on her finger as a tear slowly slid down her cheek. "We haven't even graduated high school yet and I have found the one I want to spend the rest of my life with." His speech was interrupted at that by Shay pulling him to her. She wrapped her arms around his torso as he held her tight. She held in the tears and smiled, no grinned from ear to ear. He held her as close as humanly possible, never wanting to let go.

"I love you." She said after a moment of composing herself and processing what just happened. He didn't say anything. Grayson pulled away, and once again held her face so gently in his hands. His eyes flickered back and forth before pulling her face to his, their lips meeting in the most magical, most perfect kiss that said it all.

Who would have thought, huh? Shay Daniels. The girl that has been through hell and back. Everything from rough childhood to abusive dad, psychotic stepdads and stalker students, motherless for years and attempting suicide. So yeah, hell and back.

And then there's him.

Grayson Delgato. He went from school's golden boy who came from a picture perfect family, to a boy who didn't even know how to smile anymore. A boy that lost his idol, his best friend, his big brother and never thought he would be happy again. A boy who thought he was a dissapointment, living everyday feeling guilty because he was the one who lived. I guess he had his own hell too.

It all started when she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Guess now it was the right place at the right time. Their lives were so different, but they were going through the same internal battle with themselves. With love. Wih happiness. They helped each other find themselves and found love along the way. Its funny how things work isn't it?

And it all went down in the same place.

At the edge of the cliff.
