It has been six months since you and Alec started dating before something triggered you to doubt if he really is the one for you. To say Alec loves you is an understatement. He adores you, but you've never faced any major troubles before that fateful night.
It is the day before your final exam from the subject that you dislike the most. Your nerves are a mess and you are easily pissed off. But all that is nothing compared to the phone call you get in the late evening. It is your mom and you barely understand her through the tears and sobs when she tells you your pregnant sister is in a hospital.
"Why? She is in fourth month..."
Her answer breaks your entire world apart when she says a stranger has attacked your sister during her way back home from the store.
"Is she okay? Please tell me she is...She is in a c-critical condition?!"
Breath hitches in your throat as you try to comprehend your mother's words. Your older sister is in a critical condition because some maniac attacked her?
"Mom, I am coming home. I-I..."
But your mom orders you to stay in Los Angeles and focus on the finals. Easier said than done. As soon as you say your goodbyes, you burst into tears, leaning your head in your hands as uncontrollable sobs escape your lips. How could you possibly focus back to studying after hearing devastating news? Still you want to pass the exam with flying colors and prove your professor you are smart enough, so you somehow concentrate back on your notes.
The next morning looks like the whole world is against you. First you don't hear your alarm and you nearly miss the bus to the university. But before you actually get to the bus station, you nearly trip over Alec's hockey bag on the top of the staircase and if you did, you'd roll down the stairs and miss the exam entirely. Plus, Alec is asleep on the couch, so you have to move around quietly, yet fast. Him sleeping on the couch is his way of giving you time you need to study, so you can go to sleep whenever you want and he doesn't disturb you. But today that means you have to be really careful with plates and make no noise. Or at least make as little noise as possible.
"Damn it!" you curse when the plate nearly slips out of your grip and wait quietly for few second to hear whether Alec is awake. When you hear his soft snoring, you get back to preparing breakfast. Before you begin cooking, you check the wall clock and decide you have enough time to make yourself a toast with an egg. You put bread into a toaster and start preparing eggs. After few minutes you smell something burn: "Shit! Shit shit shit, could this day get any worse!?"
The answer is yes. You drop the plate and the sound of breaking porcelain wakes Alec up. He stumbles down the stairs into a kitchen, his hair sticking up: "Y/N? What are you doing? You okay?"
"Leave me alone, Alec! I am fine!"
"Okay, okay, sorry for asking. You want me to take you to class?"
"No. Just...leave me alone."
You look away from him and lean your palms on a counter before breaking into loud sobs. You hear a chair move and you can sense his intentions.
"Leave me alone, Alec. Don't touch me."
"Baby, why are you so tense? It's just an exam and you are smart. You will pass it with no problems."
"You have no idea, have you? This exam is the most important one I have to pass! If I don't pass this one everything will be for nothing. But how would you understand?"
"Y/N?" he asks and you hear in his voice you've hurt him bad. Quickly grabbing your bag, and an apple from the fruit bowl on the counter, you run out of the kitchen and leave your surprised boyfriend behind.
Two hours later you come back home and throw your bag on the floor in frustration. The test couldn't have gone worse, your mind was occupied with thought of your sister, struggling for her life.
"Y/N, is that you?"
"No."
Alec comes around the corner, his eyebrows furrowed in confusion. When he sees look on your face, he hurries towards you: "Y/N, what happened?"
"Just leave me alone!" you yell and push past him. When you get to your room, you lock the door and collide on a bed. You bury your head in palms.
I shouldn't have taken it out on Alec. He has nothing to do with it.
"Y/N, open the door. Please. Can we talk?"
"Go away, Alec."
"Y/N..."
"GO AWAY!"
You hear him sigh on the other side of the door: "Y/N, please, tell me what's wrong? I love you and I don't want to see you like that."
After minutes of silence, you hear him say: "Fine. You know where to find me."
A week later you get the results and your sister is still in a critical condition. You did pass the exam but not with an A and that pisses you off. That leads to even more arguments with Alec. During one of the arguments, he slams his fist on a table and yells so loud you can hear glasses breaking: "OH COME ON, Y/N! YOU ARE ACTING LIKE A BITCH AND FOR NO REASON!"
"NO REASON!? MY SISTER IS IN A HOSPITAL AND I DIDN'T GET AN A ON THE EXAM! AND I BELIEVE YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA HOW DOES THAT FEEL!"
His face softens a bit: "Why didn't you tell me? I thought you know you can trust me with anything."
"Well, I didn't tell you. So what?"
He looks so wounded when he whispers: "I think we should take a break."
"Alec...I-I am sorry."
"So am I, Y/N, but it's for the best."
Something in your eyes stops you from further argument. With a small nod of your head you turn around and walk to your bedroom, where you gather your stuff. When you turn around, there's Alec.
"I am sorry for throwing you out like that, Y/N."
"I am sorry for not trusting you. So I guess this is a goodbye."
"I guess it is," he pecks tip of your nose and moves away.

It has been two weeks or maybe three since Alec asked you to leave and think about everything. All these time you spent thinking about you, your family, Alec and your relationship with him. And now, after all this thinking you've come to conclusion you still love Alec and that your probably shouldn't yell at him or shut him out. He knows your family and he likes your sister. If anyone, he would listen to you. Not only because you are together, but also because that's just who he is.
With trembling hands you take your cell phone in your hands and hesitate before typing in first few digits of his number. After typing in four of them, you stop and inhale. You can't do this. What if he doesn't want to see you ever again? Or hear from you? You decide you can't take that and delete those four numbers. As soon as you delete the last number, your phone rings and you see the person calling you is the person you longed to call.
"Alec?"
"Y/N. I am glad you picked up," he says and you can see his smile. Only this time he sounds nervous.
"Of course. Glad you called... how are you?"
"Good, good...oh, hell, who am I lying to? I am not okay, Y/N, I miss you. I am sorry I threw you out."
"Don't apologize. We both needed a break. And you did the right thing. It must've been hard living with me for the last week."
"You were stressed. I understand and I should've understood back then."
On the verge of tears, you whisper: "You did great job sticking with me. Alec...I miss you and I am sorry. For everything I put you through."
"Y/N, I miss you too. It took me two weeks to realize that, but now I know for sure."
"What does that mean for us then?"
"I don't know. Do you want to move in with me again?"
"Only if I can keep my apartment in case of troubles."
He laughs and it makes you realize how much you've missed his laugh: "Deal. Oh, and how's your sister?"
Smile draws on your face: "She'll make it. Mom called me few days ago to tell me she is better and that she'll live. And the baby is okay as well."
"That's a relief! Looks like everything worked out just fine."
"Looks like."
Awkward silence falls upon the two of you until he clears his throat: "So, uh, Y/N, you ready to come back home?"
Your smile grows wider as you whisper, tears of happiness slowly gathering in your eyes: "Yes. I am ready to come back."
