Swimming Pools- Kendrick Lamar
The hallways of the pit are cold and seemingly unforgiving. I hold Ty's hand as we make our way to Zeke and Shauna's house to tell them the news. They live in one of the chasm apartments, and have been ever since Ty was born.
We turn corners through the winding pathways and halls of the chasm corridor, along our way to Shauna and Zeke's house.
We eventually turn down their hall, Which is very close to the chasm, so close that you can hear the waves crashing against the rocks.
Ty lets a shaky breath pass through his lips. "Don't be nervous, Ty." I reassure him, lacing our fingers together as we stop in front of the door. I press a quick kiss to his lips, and lean our foreheads together.
"It's going to be okay." He tells me. I hear the crack in his voice and know that he doesn't even believe that himself.
I close my eyes, wrapping my arms around his neck. I Kiss him softly, and feel him kiss back, adding extra pressure. I feel his hands slip to be placid on my sides, eventually yet slowly moving up to my ribcage.
Everything is muffled- it's just the two of us.
I don't even hear the sound of the door opening.
"Woah," I hear someone say in a seemingly chastising way, and I pull away. I can see Ty nearly cringe from beside me, out of the corner of my eye.
It's Zeke, standing in the doorway of the Pedrad apartment, his coat draped over his arm and a file in hand. He purses his lips. "Hmm..." He looks at Ty expectantly. "Tyler?" He asks.
"Yes, dad..." Ty twists his foot on the rocks, his arms folded behind his back.
"P," he looks Ty directly in the eye. Ty sports a confused look as do I. "D," he looks in my direction now, his eyebrows raised and face aglow. "A." He waves his finger in between the two of us almost disgustedly.
Ty sighs. He ignores Zeke's comment, "May we please come in?" He folds his arms in front of him.
"Yes," he says simply. "But I'll be going on to work. See you," he swirls his head around, "On the flip side." He walks past us, and Ty grabs his wrist.
"Can you just stay here one more second?" He asks.
"No," Zeke says sassily as he slips free of Ty's grip.
"Well," Ty grabs his shirt and pulls him back. "You're gonna have to." Zeke reluctantly walks back to the doorway, stepping inside with Ty. I follow them, and we sit down.
Shauna smiles up at us genuinely as she threads a needle through a piece of black fabric. "Hi Ty. Hi Maddie." She nods at us, sitting on the couch near the edge, hovering over the coffee table. Three small candles sit on show in a holder, their flames flittering and flickering in the room.
She places the needle down on the table. "Have a seat." She says as Zeke sits down beside her.
The house is relatively dark, only a few small lamps on here and there- and hardly any windows at all. Only one, which is very close to the ceiling and covered up with black curtains.
"So what brings you here?" Zeke asks, eyebrows raised. His face looks tinted and shadowed in the pale darkness. Ty almost looks like a reflection of his father- their emerald green eyes and smooth brown hair.
Ty looks down at the candles, his eyes glittering and shimmering, then back up at his mother. "We have news." He licks his lips as he reaches over and interlaces our fingers, a smile creeping onto his face.
Shauna smiles at us, her hands on her lap, the needle and thread still on the table. Zeke looks confused. "Well what is it?" He asks, his eyes narrowed. Shauna rolls hers, playfully hitting Zeke on the shoulder as he slouches into the couch.
He looks from me, the smile growing wide as he opens up his mouth, to his expectant parents. "We're having another baby." Zeke stiffens.
"Do you know if it's a boy or a girl? Do you know how many? How long? Deets, man. Give me all the deets. You know, as in details? Yeah. Give them to me." He rambles.
Shauna smiles, laughing, and, in this pale darkness, I see a tear of joy and genuine happiness slip down her cheek.
>>
Ty wraps an arm around me protectively, and looks down at me, our eyes meeting each other's and not letting go until we blink. "I can't believe we're going to have another baby." Ty says in awe as he smiles. I smile too, not knowing what else to do or how else to respond.
"It's going to be nice." He adds, and I sigh. "Hey," he nudges me with his arm that's still wrapped around me. I look up at him expectantly. "What's wrong?" He asks.
"I just feel like we're not going to have any time together, Ty." The words slip out quietly, a sigh of their own proportions.
"Baby," He speaks, "We'll always have time. And, as I've said before- if we don't have time, we'll make time." He closes, and I hug him as we continue to walk, but then he stops us.
He smirks sheepishly as he cups my cheeks with his hands, leaning down to kiss me, tilting his head the slightest bit before he does so. I feel a grin creep on my face when he pulls away. I wrap my arms around his neck, leaning our foreheads together.
"This is it, Ty. This is the start of another new chapter. Another new addition. And I look very forward to going through it all with you by my side." I breathe. He kisses me again, placing his hands on my sides, drifting up to stay placid on my rib cage.
"I am too." He says simply, a cheeky smile plastered across his face.
This moment, this little infinity, if you will, is what I hold onto in my darkest moments. When things aren't at their best, I think back to a time when they were, and that time is now. That time is right now- this moment, this little infinity.
It's ours to hold, ours to remember, ours to never forget, and ours to keep.
>> Four
I sit in the control room, my eyes scanning over each tape for anything suspicious in the compound, the city. My mind isn't really here right now. I still can't get over the fact that Maddie is having another baby.
It pains me to say this, but she really is growing up. She's not the little girl she used to be anymore. She's tough and strong- she's a woman, she's just like her mother.
I just don't like how she's getting so serious with Ty so fast. They got married just a few months after they started dating.
I know that Ty is Zeke's son, but I just don't like the fact that Maddie and Ty are already having children what seems to be so early in their relationship.
I'm just glancing at each of the camera views as they pass by, and then one catches my eye. I pause it and look at the film. I see two people hugging near the chasm. I rewind the tape to find out who they are.
As I rewind the tape, I see the two people, a boy and a girl, kiss, and then I rewind it far enough back to see them walk back to the darkness in which they came from. I gasp when I see who it is.
It's Maddie and Ty.
"Four?" I hear a voice ask from the doorway into the control room. It's Zeke, I can already tell.
I look up. "Yes?" I ask.
"I need to talk to you, follow me." He says, and I do so reluctantly. We walk out of the control room, into the lightness of the chasm sky roof region, and up onto a ledge where Zeke has brought me before.
It's an overhang right into the pit, but it's so high up I never come up here. I could just slip right off the steps and I'd be dead.
We lean against a wall that's perpendicular to the large overhang's edge. "What do you need to talk to me about?" I ask, and all Zeke does is scream and hug me. "How very feminine of you, Ezekiel." I state, and he merely smiles wider.
"We're going to be grandparents again!" He cheers. I force myself to smile- for Maddie, for Tris, for Zeke, for Shauna, and for Ty- they'd all want me to be happy for the two of them.
"I was about to go to work when I opened my door and there they were- making out!" Zeke squeals like a teenage girl getting the latest gossip in the whole faction.
My eyes widen at what he has said. Making out? That seems so unlike Maddie, especially in public. I feel like Ty brings out the worst in her- he's making her do bad things- things it seems like she's never done before. "They're way too physical for me." I purse my lips.
Zeke doesn't acknowledge my response. "They were so deep in it they didn't even realize I was standing there at the door!" He screams, "Oh yes they're too physical!" He smirks.
I mentally face palm myself, knowing what he's referring to. They are definitely too physical for me.
I scoot to the edge of the overhang, and, ignoring how high up it is, I look at the people below. More specifically Maddie.
I see her standing with Ty on one of the rocks near the pit- it's very high up I may add. They stand on the rock, and Ty holds Maddie as she spreads her arms out wide, like she's a bird.
She then starts laughing, and she takes Ty's face in her hands and kisses him. They're actually really close to us, maybe a level below us, actually.
Zeke stares at me from a distance, before coming over beside me. "Whatcha looking at, Buddy?" He asks me.
"The two love birds themselves." I say softly, but it comes out with a bitter tone. I point down at them, and Zeke simply sighs.
"They really are in love," Zeke says. "It reminds me of you and Tris. You two were exactly like that when you were that age. You would look at each other so lovingly, so-" I cut him off.
"I know, it's just... She's grown up so fast. She's already married with one kid and another on the way. She's not a little girl anymore, Zeke. I just don't like the fact that she's already grown up." I sigh.
"I know how you feel buddy. It's not the same, but Ty's already grown up. At least you still have Alex- Ashton is already engaged and getting married soon too." He says. I nod.
I guess I am just overreacting. She's grown up. It's time for me to accept that fact and move on.
>> Maddie
Ty and I left the path of the chasm and decided to go to the pit overhangs where Ty and his father would spend a majority of their time together when Ty was young. My father never brought me to the overhangs- they were too high up for either of us.
I've since overcome that fear, and now, I actually feel free when I'm up high- like I'm a bird that can't be shot down.
We walk hand in hand, eventually ending up at the lowest overhang. "Where do you want to go?" Ty asks, looking into my eye.
"Up higher." I say simply, and so we climb up higher, maybe about three or four overhangs- there's about six or seven of them, all clustered together to form a giant stairwell of rocks.
We end up on the second overhang from the top, and I take a moment to just look out at the pit- the center of Dauntless life. From Dauntless Secret, where Olivia happily holds a job, to the coffee shop where Ty and I argued after the night.
I look at the pit, and remember Ty's face as we stepped out into the confetti filled hollow room, a smile plastered across his face on his birthday, at his party.
I suddenly feel my arms being lifted up beside me, and I truly do feel like a bird. Ty kisses my neck, then smiles down at me.
"We're having another baby, dear." He kisses me when I turn to him, and I laugh.
"Yes we are, dear." I take his face in my hands and kiss him swiftly.
There's no better moment than now, and I choose to live for the moment. To live for now, which is spectacular and beautiful in its own aspect.
I will choose to live my life, no matter which way it goes, as Long as I have Ty and our beautiful children by my side, because that's what makes now so beautiful. So spectacular.
It's watching those you love grow and shape themselves into who they are, and it's beautiful, and I wouldn't miss watching it for the world.
