"Skylar- hey- yeah. My job is done, she'll need you now.."

A revolution had emerged within ourselves. We were closing in on the end game. The breeze picked up.

"I'm NOT going back in. She wanted to speak to him in private. I'm out, I'm done and I'm SO.. FUCKING MAD.."

She yelled over the phone, one hand in her hair.

"YOU.. DON'T GET TO TELL ME WHAT TO DO ANYMORE. I'M SO FUCKING TIRED. NICKY NEEDS YOU, AND YOU WILL BE HERE IN TEN FUCKING MINUTES. THAT'S IT!"

The breeze turned into wind. Travis had left with the car, leaving us to walk. I shivered in the cold.

"Skylar, I'm so fucking mad? That I don't even want to argue now - no, I am mad at you, you are at fault. Tell me you EVER listened to me when I needed you, Sky! I was BROKEN, you wouldn't CARE listen to anything. EVER! All you cared about were the fucking plans-"

I wish I could listen to the other side of the call. I stepped away, leaving the friends to it. I didn't know Alex, did I? I didn't know what her life was like..

"SKYLAR, YOU ARE NOT MY FUCKING LAWYER. YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE MY FRIEND!"

I leaned against the wall. I heard banging in Nicky's house. Was this it? Was this actually it?

The truth had to come out an ugly way.. but I didn't want to lose my fiancèe. Her phone went flying across the street.. which she'd found in her own pocket earlier.

I never looked at things from anyone else's perspective, did I? I never wanted to think anyone else would be hurting.. somehow maybe because of my own self.

In truth.. I never asked her how she was when I was away. I never thought she'd be hurting, did I?

It wasn't my fault that she was.. but it was my fault for not asking.

Although, the truth was.. I never felt entitled to ask her anything intimate. I never felt deserving of an explanation.

None of her plans made sense to me.. and it was my own fault.

Her phone's screen lit up in the distance. Alex sat on the pedestal, resting her head in her hands.

My concerns grew largely.

"Alex?", I walked close to her as she appeared to be breathing loudly.

"Alex..", I kneeled in front of her, "baby, you haven't eaten anything.."

She didn't look up. I put my hand on hers and she immediately pulled away.

"No- I just.. I don't want anything", she croaked. Her hair was a mess. It seemed like she was gonna cry.

"Hold on, I'll get you something", I stood hurriedly to walk to the closest store.

"No", she cried, "I don't want to owe you even more.."

"What?", I frowned.

She scoffed.

"Alex, what the fuck?"

"I don't know what to SAY, just LET ME BE.."

I put my hands in my pocket and stood still. A vehicle passed by, horns blaring. The back of my head felt a sudden pang, almost like parts of my body associated memories with the sounds.

"Where did that come from?"

"It's dug deep, Rose.. I'll never be able to repay you for what you've given me.."

"Alex, you don't owe me anything.."

"I always have! You were born with a silver spoon, you grew up in a wealthy, elite family. You could have anything you'd ask for..-"

"Where is this going, Alex?"

"I was a lost cowboy, who could write some random thing and call it poetry.. I was fucking lost. We are miles apart, Rose.."

I had no response to that. My face hurt as I watched my own fiancèe reject herself.

"If it weren't for you, Alex, I wouldn't have been here", I croaked, "you saved me from the fucking hell hole, Jesus Christ..!"

"Did I?", she objected, loudly, "or was I too late, Rose? You think I'm the hero when I couldn't even punch him there.."

"Words..", she looked away, "that's all I'm good at.. and I'm absolutely victimizing myself in your eyes. Now you'll sympathise and I'll be the same, long lost pathetic and bootless said orphan.. whom you can't stop obsessing over!"

I smiled, sadly, "it sounds like it would make a good story.."

She looked up with sad eyes, "that's all I'm good at.."

"You do tell good stories..-"

"But this is real, Rose. I suck.."

The cloud rumbled, like the weather was about us. Like Alex, herself set a story in our own setting.. and the Gods agreed.

"I'll call Travis. You can go wherever you want after you eat", I knew she needed space.

And I didn't remember if the old Rose would take things in her own hands, or if she had the power to bend her fiancèe's anger.. if she knew at all, any better than Alex herself.

Her phone buzzed, still on the ground.

The screen flashed, Aiden.

How long has it been ringing for?

As much as I didn't want to, I received it and quickly handed it to Alex, who looked like was about to faint.

"What?", she greeted, obtrusively.

"H- what? Y-", she panicked, barely able to keep her head still. Her terrified eyes met mine as she looked for comfort.

"I'm coming just now-", she scrambled to her feet, immediately losing balance.

"Alex, what happened?"

"We need to go, now!"

I held up her arm over my shoulder as she pulled us to the main road.

"Please, hurry, hurry, hurry. TAXI!"

"Alex, I deserve a fucking explanation!"

"Abuelita.."

-

"Which way?"

"Upstairs!"

We jostled through the corridors and stairs, zooming past people in white coats.

"Teresa Garcìa, please?"

"Right around the corner. She's in the ICU.."

My heart sank.

"Aiden!", Alex yelled as soon as she saw him. My eyes connected with two other people's. A sobbing woman in her fifties and an ice-cold man with a pot belly.

The woman tried to approach Alex but she walked straight past her as if she hadn't even seen her.

"What's going on, Aiden?"

She'd barely finished her sentence, when her palm reached her mouth and she turned on her heels, racing towards the washroom.

Her dad's stone cold eyes met mine.

Fuck.
