Chapter 1: Jo Yuri

Hey, Cupid:

What would be better: to accept one’s fate because it will be the best for everyone or to try to be the writer of one’s own destiny despite the fact that it will crumple the smooth path ahead of him/her?

Third Person’s POV

“Kuya, okay ka pa ba? Bola lang naman ‘yon, hindi ka pa naman siguro patay ano? Kailangan ko na bang tumawag ng ambulansya?” Yuri said, tapping the shoulders of the man who got knocked out because the ball that a group of children plays flew to his direction.  

Pagkatapos ng ilang ulit pa na pagtapik, unti-unti nang nagkakamalay ang lalaki. What welcomed him was an angel, he thought. Not to be exaggerated but her innocent worried eyes staring directly into his, her fair complexion which perfectly matches the white flowy dress that she’s wearing and her wavy, light brown hair which naturally moves along with the rhythm of the wind, all seamlessly spells an angel. Or maybe a Goddess, because she doesn’t have a pair of wings and a halo. Lost in the trance of such divine beauty in front of him, he uttered: “Patay na ba ako? Ikaw ba ‘yong anghel na susundo sa akin?”

“Hala hindi po.” Yuri chuckled. That made her shine even brighter in the man’s eyes making him captivated once again. He finally got back to his senses when he felt a hand smack the back of his head, the same part where the ball hit him.

“Aray! Ano ba!” reklamo ng lalaki.

“Gago nawiwirduhan na ata si ate sa ‘yo. Kung ano-anong pinagsasabi mo r’yan.”

“Huh? Buhay pa ako?” Kinapa-kapa ng lalaki ang sarili n’ya para makasigurado.

“Oo naman, gusto mo bang batukan kita r’yan para ma-double check mo?” Akmang babatukan muli ng bagong dating na babae ang lalaki ng biglang nagsalita si Yuri.

“Ah sige po. Mukhang okay na naman si kuya, aalis na po ako.” Binigyan muli ni Yuri ng isang ngiti ang lalaki bago s’ya umakmang aalis. Her honey smile made the man’s heart flutter, sa ‘di niya maipaliwanag na dahilan. Not wasting any moment and even if he feels like he would be 1000x even weirder in front of everyone in the park, he got up and quickly grabbed Yuri’s right hand to stop her from walking away.

“Wait lang, miss. This might sound crazy but, will you marry me?”, the man said with one of his knees bended on the floor as if doing a wedding proposal.

‘Oh no, not again’, Yuri thought. Pahamak talaga ang pagiging maalalahanin niya eh. Lagi na lang ganito ang kinakalabasan. Habang nag-iisip siya on how will she respectfully reject the man, her eyes caught the woman who has been staring at them for quite some time now. She worked her powers, digging up the history between the two. She found out that the woman is the long-time best friend of the man who is now currently holding her hand and she seems to have hidden feelings for the man. The man, too, seems to like the woman but is holding himself back because he doesn’t want to cross the uncertain line of having a romantic relationship with the latter.

‘Myghadniss mahal n’yo naman pala ang isa’t isa pahamak lang talaga ‘tong beauty ko eh. Hassle talaga minsan.’

“Hmmm.. kuya ganito kasi, can you see my ring finger? I’m already engaged kasi so I cannot accept your feelings for me. And because I can tell that you have this brave side of yours, based on your actions just right now, I wanted to subtly remind you to use that courage to pursue someone you had long been in love with, because who knows, things might get better between you too that way. I’ll cheer you on.” Inalis n’ya ang kanyang kamay mula sa pagkakahawak ng lalaki.

‘I have to work my magic now.’ She snapped her fingers and the atmosphere between the two people changed. Without bidding goodbye because she might just, yet again, spoil a romantic confession, she walked away from the scene leaving the two people behind who are now exchanging confused glances of what had exactly happened. Amidst their confused faces, nobody can deny their eyes filled with love and feelings now fueled with courage—courage to pursue the love that they are long depriving themselves of. ‘Yes! Mission accomplished na naman. Galing mo talaga, Yuri.’

“Iced cappuccino for miss Yuri?”, the man on the counter called the girl’s name, signaling that they had already finished preparing her drink. She stood up to get her order, showing the boy her refreshing eye smile and a slight bow to show the latter her gratitude. She quickly went back to her seat because she could be in trouble once again. What is meant by trouble is that the scenario earlier might happen again but this time, with the man in the counter. ‘No, no, I couldn’t let that happen again. Hassle na naman ‘pag nagkataon.’ Yuri thought.   

She sighed recalling what happened earlier. She opened the book that she was reading earlier in the park after sipping from the drink that she ordered. The caffeine kicked in her system, giving her comfort. With the help of the peaceful atmosphere in the shop, she continued reading the part where she had left off. It’s a pretty popular story—Cupid and Psyche and it’s not an overstatement to say that everybody knows the main character in that book, even if they hadn’t read the story itself.

Yuri thought to herself: ‘It’s funny how people have come to conclude that Cupid is a man. Maybe because, well, it is basically how the Greeks have pictured him out to be. I mean, I am a cupid myself and I can assure you, Cupid has many identities—by that I mean, whenever the present cupid is nearing his/her death, another member of my lineage from the next generation carrying a certain symbol would be informed that he/she would assume the role of being a cupid. It’s the real Cupid who gave our family this job. His gender? I don’t really know because for goodness sake, he is a god, does he really have to assume a gender?’

Anyway, going back to her story, the family itself is not really sure how it works but, it was said that all the chosen people from their lineage that would serve as cupids has the same symbol which signifies that they will carry on the said job—that is, a little mole on their noses. Whenever a child was born and he/she carries such that, it was already her destiny to learn the secret of the family, of how special he/she is and the power that he/she possesses. Afterall, he/she is the reason why the family has immense luck and success in everything that they do.

For the entirety of Yuri’s life, she has experienced so much love from her family. Sabi kasi nila, since she’s their lucky charm (literally), she should always be showered with love and every good thing in this world. That is why; when she was at the right age and the family had informed her of her job, she had accepted it wholeheartedly. Love, for Yuri is a very precious thing that shall be shared to everybody. Which is why, she was very much delighted of having the power to help couples be successful in their romantic relationships. It was a proven fact (though of course, only their family knows this) that whenever a cupid gives its blessing to a certain couple, they will always find love even in the most difficult point of their relationship. Beautiful, isn’t it?

However, there are two things which Yuri considers drawbacks of having such job. She’s not really sure if it is part of her powers as a cupid but people just magically fall in love with her the moment they were caught in her presence. ‘Yong tipong you would literally experience ‘love at first sight’. Hindi naman sa ayaw ni Yuri ng ganoon. Aminin man natin o hindi, there is such a thing as ‘beauty privilege’. Beauty tends to capture the eyes so people will definitely feel a liking towards you because your appearance is very pleasant to the eyes. Judgemental kasi mga tao. Since it is the physical appearance that we always tend to see first, it is somewhat our human nature to judge based on what we perceive first—that is, one’s beauty through our eyes.

However, hindi sya convenient for Yuri at times. Kagaya na lang kanina. It’s her job to help people find their soulmates pero lagi na lang nakakasagabal itong ine-emit niyang ‘enchanting’ energy and their partners, be it a man or a woman tend to fall in love with her instead. Good thing this kind of enchanting energy only works on a ‘first time’ basis. Which means, they tend to lose their infatuation on her (she likes to call it infatuation kasi it wasn’t as if they really like her in the first place) the more time she spends time together with them.

Another drawback of having this power is that—

Yuri’s attention was caught dahil sa mga pabulong na sigawan ng isang couple few tables in front of her. Maybe this is another opportunity to help couples reconcile and have a happily ever after—how nice it is to love and be loved in return. Time to work her magic again!
