Chapter 22

Three hours

thirty minutes

20 seconds

Exactly the time I got before I woke up and started panting like a big heavy dog. Nightmare.. yet again they had started haunting me. I knew that I was not going to get any sleep so I jumped out of my bed and put my sports shoes along with a black hoodie and black running pants. The clock displayed 4 am as I took my phone and tiptoed my way out the room. Carefully I closed the door trying not to wake Kelly knowing she was not that of a heavy sleeper I ran towards the Hotel gate. The cold wind slapped me as I stepped out into the dark night with shimmering stars forcing me to pull my hood up and started running to beat the cold. Part of me wished to keep running away from reality away from the past but part of me knew I had to stop running and face it. The journey I had set off on was not easy but what is life without risk. You either survive life or you live it. 

After successfully running around the city I stopped at a park and sat down on a bench as empty as my head. I took out my phone and realized I had been running for an hour and a half. 'Adam and Carl already killed, two more to go before the real culprit is executed' I thought to myself. Suddenly I heard a little shuffling noise behind me and my ears pricked up. I swiftly turned around to see who might be the one to wander around at this point in time and was surprised to meet none other than Ethan.

"What in the world are you doing here?" I asked him springing up to my feets

"Isn't this the question I should ask you?" Ethan said folding his arms. He was wearing running shoes and a tight fitted shirt through which his well-defined muscles were visible. Damn, he worked out.

 What am I thinking

"To be the wise one in this following conversation I am going to tell you- I was out for a run"I said formally holding my head high, my habit.Surprisingly I heard fits of laughter instead of a snarky comment. I looked at him with a confused expression

"OH. You are so... no words to describe" He continued laughing " Are you always this serious?" 

"No need to laugh" I said as I crossed my hands over my chest and pouted, I haven't done that in a while

"You know back at my place whenever I used to annoy my mother she used to do the same thing. But was not good at it" 

"You had a family?" I said more like whispered which led to him raising his eyebrows " I mean you are a traitor anyway" I regained my composure

"That is what you believe but back in Wisconsin, I have a family whom I left to set out to find a job for myself. But joined you guys instead. At my place, there was a girl whose family was ruined by James and she was like a sister to me" He said as he took a seat beside me. Woah maybe I was really just being paranoid and he is just another person like Jeremy who wants to help.

"I didn't know you were.." But that did not mean I had to be soft there is no place for sympathy " Good you have an aim, anyways it's time I head back and start shifting and planning" I continued as I stood up and started walking away

"Didn't know you could hide that well. Have a nice day" Ethan called out.

Reaching the room I heard voices so I got cautious and went in. I saw Jeremy desperately trying to wake Kelly up.

"Thank god you are here. Please wake her up" He said more like begged

"Didn't know she could sleep that heavy" I murmured as I took her arm and tried to get her off Jeremy

"She has been through a lot" Jeremy said getting emotional

"Yeah.... move aside" I directed Jeremy and pulled the rug under Kelly making her fall

"Crap" came her voice as she struggled to get up " What the heck Alex?"

"You were not waking up" I shrugged like nothing happened " get ready we are moving in an hour"

I had expected foul smell and dirt but found none when I opened the doors of the warehouse Mark had given me the address of. I opened the doors further and set the noise canceling device at the center. At the corner of the warehouse, there were old boxes piled up along with some computers

"Jeremy set up the computers and give me some information on Jeff Jones and Kelly and Ethan lets begin the training" I said going out in the backyard of the warehouse which was surrounded by trees.

"  believe this is the deal you had with Mark" Kelly said catching up with me.

"Yeah, this is exactly what I had asked for" I said looking in the woods " you can fight right ?"  I said directing myself at  Ethan

" I am going back" Kelly said in the background

" Can you?" He said smirking

I throw a sweet smile at him and the next thing I know is that he had his arm around my neck as he tried to strangle me. I grab hold of his arms and kicked his foot, my elbow shot back and a groan came as it came in contact with his jaw. He set me free

"I am not going easy on you "

"Neither am I Alex, neither am I" 

We lurched towards each other, I threw a kick at him and he dodged it punching me in my stomach. I staggered back and perform a roundhouse kick propping up my elbow to hit his chin again, this time he staggers back. In seconds he charges towards me and punches me in my face, I dodge but don't see the kick coming my way as a sharp pain shoots through my stomach. He grabs hold of my wrist and twists it behind my back making me let out a small scream. I tried to get out of his hands but failing I choose what was very common, with another hand free I grab his hair and pull them and kicked him in the shins. He let out a groan and fell on his back.

"That's against the rule" He winced in pain

"What rules are you talking about?" I said smirking

As I turned around he caught hold of my wrist bringing me down and pinned me hard on the ground. I struggled to get off but he was way too strong and heavy

"How much do you eat?" I say between my struggle

I look up finally to meet his blue eyes which were mesmerizing and caught hold of my senses.  Gazing at him and his blue eyes I finally realized the depth it held and the way it made me feel like as if I was on a boat sailing through the quiet peaceful ocean. I felt calm and composed.

" I like the position we are in " he said smirking as he caught me staring at him. I pushed him off me and he let me do it

"Not funny" I said standing up and shoving off the dirt 

"You fought well" he said standing up

"So did you" I said "Surprisingly" I added

"Did something happen here? " Kelly said as she came out of the warehouse

"We fought" I said

"Something else happened  I can smell it" She teased

"Well then you can be a good sniffer and can replace police dogs" I teased back

She was going to say something when Jeremy cut her off

"Jeff is in the town"

and I smiled another mission on the way.
