Yeah, so here I am, almost half an hour later, standing in front of Will.
"Hi," he says, grinning unsuspectingly. He doesn't know the fucking embarrassing question I'm about to drop on him.
I open my mouth to speak but no sound comes out of me. Get it together, Cat, I scream to myself internally, you'll get to go to the prestigious Upper Lake Institute in London if you ask your long-time best friend one simple question. At least I want to believe it's a simple question but it really doesn't feel like it right now.
"Uh...um-er..." I'm stuttering so bad right now, he's gonna know something weird is up. I gotta get it over with.
From the look on his face, I think he's already guessed from my discomfort.
"Hey?" Will asks, getting concerned. "You doing good over there?"
I want to say, "Yeah, just give me a minute," but that's gonna make it seem like this is something big. So I just swallow back my anxiety and blurt it out.
"I was wondering whether you have, like, a thing for me, if you know what I mean...?"
At the end, my voice gets higher, like I'm asking a question. I immediately cringe at that and look down, waiting for Will to say something.
I've been waiting for a long time. It seems Will has also lost his ability to talk.
Finally, he says something. "Maybe."
I look up at him. He looks defensive and very red. "Maybe I do," he repeats, looking away. He's so shy, it's adorable. "What's it to you?"
I try to grin reassuringly, trying to make it seem like it's not a big deal, but to me it is a big deal. "It's nothing, I was just trying to see," I assure him, my voice faltering at weird intervals.
"Oh, okay," he says offhandedly, looking uncomfortable. "Yeah, well...yeah."
"Well, thanks for telling me!" My voice is too sugary and I start walking away, trying to act normal but I'm stopped by Will grabbing my wrist to stop me. "Huh?"
"Are you mad at me?" he asks quietly. My eyes widen.
"No!" I protest, trying to frantically wrestle out of his grip. "Why would I be?"
He doesn't say anything.

"So, didja do it?" I ask Cat as we head to the parking lot. She doesn't look that great.
"Yeah," she says in a small voice, not looking at me. "And he said yes."
Actually, I already knew he did because I might or might not have barged into Will's mind at lunch. "So why are you so depressed about it?"
She thinks for a couple moments before saying, "I'm not sure. Maybe it's his reaction."
I already know how he reacted too. "Well, you did it anyways. That means you're going to Upper Lake."
