The day Logan got his mark

Logan woke with slight chill running through the room. He looked to his mother, seeming as the alarm clock would never work again. His mother, Jamie, nodded. Seeming satisfied that Logan was awake, she left. Logan sighed, starting his daily routine. He hoped for a happy birthday, however his parents found it useless. He wouldn't be getting one at school either seeming as no one knew he was deaf. He was turning 16 today. Something many kids dream of. The day you receive your soul mark. Logan pushes the covers to the end of his bed, kicking them against the footboard. He wished he could hear the soft thump like he used to be able to. That was a way for him to test if his wish had come true. He wished for his hearing to return but it never happened. He shook his head, going to the closet. He hummed in decision, wondering what he would wear. He chose a black tank top, a plaid blue shirt, and some simple jeans. He rushed to the bathroom hoping his soul mark was already there. He undressed and looked himself over. Unfortunately, it seemed he would have to wait until this afternoon, the time he was actually born. He was born at 12:36. So he finished dressing himself, putting on his glasses which he saw no point in having. He felt as though he could see pretty okay. But then again he knew he was just used to not being able to see. He brushed his hair back a little, before leaving his room, walking to the kitchen where he made some toast. He didn't realize when the toast had popped and because of that, his toast wasn't very warm anymore. He groaned, cursing the gods for his lack of hearing. He took the toast nonetheless, spreading some jam on it. He ate quickly, running back to his room to brush his teeth. Afterwards he grabbed his phone, headphones, which were a comfort item now, his bag, and watch. The watch was modified by him, it vibrates every hour. He felt very proud of it even if it was that simple. He nodded to his parents as he walked to the bus stop. He saw a few others there, but he also saw a boy who he had never seen. The boy had scars down his face, along with what looked like self harm scars. He was going to ask about them but realized that some may not want it to be talked about. So he instead, simply slipped the headphones on and continued to listen to silence. He missed the time when he could listen to podcasts, he mostly missed welcome to night vale. Which he had only gotten to part three before going deaf. He soon felt someone tap his shoulder, he looked over seeing the boy he was staring at earlier. The boy said something, obviously unheard by Logan. Logan wanted to cry, he hated when this type of stuff happened. He wished he could hear the boy. He instead, glared, and looked away. He studied the road, hoping the boy would go away. The boy next to him looked upset. Logan felt bad, so turned and motioned for the boy to repeat what he said. The boy perked up, and Logan tried to read his lips. Logan wasn't very good at it so only caught a few words.

"Patton! Name?" Is all Logan saw. He panicked, and hoped the boys name was Patton, and hoped he asked what Logan's name was. He knew he said something else but couldn't figure out what it was seeming as he only saw the word 'what.' Logan knew his voice was horrible so he took out a pen and paper.

'I'm Logan, I lost my voice so I can't talk. I also don't wish to metaphorically speak with you anymore, so goodbye.' Logan ripped the page out, handing it to Patton,  he then turned away. The bus soon rumbled up to the bus stop. He didn't spare a glance at the other boy.

After a long bus ride, mostly filled with people pushing and messing with him, he stepped off the bus. The classes he had we're harder than almost all the classes. He sat with no one during home room. The only person in the room was the teacher. Who he was with all day, every hour. Except lunch. The teacher knew ASL and was teaching Logan. He had said that once Logan master it he could start reading lips. So he did the normal introduction of the day.

'Hello Mr. Sanders. It's Logan. How are you today? I'm okay right now' Logan signed. The teacher, Thomas, smiled, signing back.

'It's Thomas Logan. I've told you many times,' he said with a teasing smile, 'I'm good thank you for asking. We're going to be going into math and English for a little then before lunch do some ASL then do some more after and finish the day with History, sound good?' I nodded in agreement, sitting down at my desk. I waited for the announcements to go off. They had modified this room for the speaker to vibrate. And with me being right by the speaker, I could tell when it did so. However, I read in the meantime. I felt the vibration and looked to Thomas. He wrote everything the speaker said down seeming as there were some words I didn't know in ASL. I've been deaf since freshman year, and I'm now a Junior. So I've been learning ASL for at least two years. At first I didn't study, I was certain that my hearing would come back but now I knew it wouldn't. I started to read the announcements.

"Good morning students! We have an assembly tomorrow! Everyone has to come. A few classes have been canceled due to the assembly tomorrow. So the classes that are canceled are all Last period classes. This is for tomorrow. The rest of your day will be normal. We also have a few things we have to share! We want to remind everyone that it's mental heath month! Everyone should try and ask at least one stranger about their day today! Also, spirt week is coming up! Get ready for it everyone! This years going to be very different! Thanks all everyone! Have a fantastic day!"

I sighed at the sight of that all. Basically tomorrow was a day I had to sit and work all day. I had a plan in place to be able to decide wether or not to go to assembly's. I always chose not to, and instead chose to learn more ASL during that time.

'You got all that?' Thomas asked, I nodded and he erased the board. I look back and he smiles, starting to get into his book of lesson as he calls it. He pulls a few sheets out and hands them to me, 'tell me if you need help, it's mostly review but some is new'

'Alright' I said. I grabbed the paper and a pencil, starting on the work.

Two periods down now to learn some ASL. Thomas went to the board, writing all the phrases I was to learn today. A few of them were things like 'bear in mind' or 'lesson learned' and some others were simple things I just hadn't fully picked up on.

It was a long hour, but an hour nonetheless. I waved bye to Thomas, walking my way to the bathrooms. It was almost 12:36! Soon I could start looking for my soulmates. I stood in the bathroom for about four minutes. I checked my watch for what was the eighth time. One more minute. I closed my eyes and waited. When I opened my eyes, I found 5 strings attached to my left hand. They seemed to float into the distance. I tugged on one, but nothing happened. The red string was all over me, so I decided that I would just clean it up, letting it run up and down my arm and my shoulders. Once I had, I left the bathroom, heading back to my classroom. When I walked in, Thomas had a small cupcake on my desk and happy birthday written on the board. He looked over me and waved. I smiled, giving him a hug.

'I see you got your soul mark?'

'Marks' I corrected him. I had five soulmates. Holy shit, I had five people who were meant to be with me as long as we lived. I smiled to myself. This was a amazing day.
