Chapter 16

I ran down to the Hospital Wing, and walked over to Annabeth’s bed. I found her reading from a file, her lips pursed in concentration. She looked up and she looked a lot better. The green was gone around her eyes and the color returned to her face.

“Hey Percy.” She set down the folder and sniffed the air. “Is that takeout I smell?

I opened the bag and pulled out various cartons. “Yep, smells good right?”

She opened one carton and her face broke out in a huge smile. “Pad Thai! My favorite! Percy, you really are the perfect boyfriend.”

I rubbed the back of my neck. “I wouldn’t go that far.”

She leaned forward and planted a kiss on my nose. “Don’t ever doubt yourself.”

I think I blushed. Then another thing occurred to me. I pulled out the clipboard and handed it to her. “Chaos needed some signatures on a couple documents. It’s just for your induction into the army.”

She took the documents and pointed a chopstick at the folder she was reading. “One of the messenger boys dropped that off about ten minutes ago. Said to read it and then give it to you.”

“Okay, thanks.”

I flipped open the file and a carton of fried rice and began to read. Inside were five pages with a picture and information underneath about that person. A sticky note was attached to the first page reading: Hello! Just wanted to let you know that the war thing looks serious. These are your team members. They’re all highly skilled. I just need to run a few thousand training exercises to make sure they can function as a group. Should arrive a week or so after you. Good luck! Also, you, Sam, Zoe, and Annabeth should meet me in my office tomorrow to discuss code names. Chrissy said Annabeth would be done healing my then. I finished the note and peeled it off to reveal the first page. I started to read the documents in turn:

I cocked my head. I wonder why Chaos included their code names. I turned the last page and found another stick note. Remember, bring this file to the meeting. We’ll discuss then. Ta-ta!

I snickered and stuffed the papers back into the folder. I finished up my carton of food and peered over Annabeth’s arm. “How are the forms coming along?”

She placed the pen cap on the tip of the pen and stuck it into her bun. “Mmm, okay. I think I have a couple more things to sign and circle.”

“Well that’s a good thing. Looks like you finished your food. Getting your appetite back?”

She nodded. “I am. I think those pills Chrissy gave me did the trick.”

“Did I hear my name?” Chrissy poked her head around the corner and smiled gently. She rounded the corner with a grey bottle in her hand. “I have your last round of medication Annabeth.” She poured out a small dose onto a spoon and handed it to my girlfriend. She took it and grimaced at the taste.

“Why is it that your medicine always tastes terrible?”

“It’s not the taste that helps you get better.” Chrissy scolded. “Besides, that was your last dose of it. Tomorrow, you’ll be off to your own quarters.” She checked her vitals, marked them down, and left.

I glanced out of a nearby window and found it was already dark. “Well, I should get going.” I stood, stretched, and yawned. “I’ll come and get you tomorrow for the meeting with Chaos.”

I kissed her goodnight and flashed out to my room. I lay on the bed thinking for a couple of minutes and then fell into a deep slumber.
