January 26, 1998

Today when I got home from school, Matt called. I said immediately, “Zach dumped me, right?”

“Well… yeah.”

Why does he always do this?”
“Are you sad?”

“No,” I quickly answered. “I just don’t understand him.”

Matt giggled and said, “You know tomorrow he’ll just say he likes you again. Lisa does that to me, too. In school I’ll be like, ‘Are we going out?’ and she’ll say we’re not, but then she’ll call me and say she wants to.”

We ended up talking a lot about that – Lisa and Zach and how weird they are – and then I said, “All right well… bye.”

“NO!” He cried. It surprised me.

So we kept talking about other things, like how girls don’t eat so boys will think they’re thin. It was weird – we never ran out of things to talk about.

Then my mom came in and told me to get off the phone because I’m grounded from it (as always). A little while later, Matt called back. He said, “Call Zach.”

“I don’t even want to…” I told him.
“Trust me,” he said, “You do.”

“Do you know what he’s going to tell me?”
“Yup.”
“Then why can’t you just tell me yourself?”
But my mom came in and I really had to get off the phone then.

[Reading these entries, I had forgotten that Matt could be nice sometimes. He was just an eleven-year-old boy, after all, not a real villain.]
