I know that I have a habit of describing my strangest stories as taking you guys for a trip down the rabbit hole. So, given that, I had a flash of inspiration, and realised that perhaps I should actually take you all down that hole. This could work out to be another long one and I will try and include as much of Carroll's amazing work as possible but with my twist. I hope that you all enjoy. 🐰⌚

The team all squeezed into the hospital room and gathered around the bed upon which lay one of their own. The machines that she was hooked up to, beeping steadily and reassuringly.

She wasn't supposed to have been there. Hell, it was only at the last minute that the others had decided that they could use her expertise on the mission. And given that, they couldn't help but feel guilty. They couldn't help but want to turn back the clock, and leave the already injured woman, in the compound. Steve, Bucky and Sam feeling worse than most. The three men having more in common with the former airborne ranger, than the others. The three men well aware of what she had already been through. Yet they also knew that (Y/n) wouldn't blame them for not having been able to watch her back as thoroughly as they had promised. Wouldn't have blamed anyone for her current predicament. That just wasn't her.

She had been annoyed when Steve had told her that she should stay in the compound. That they could handle the mission. The former ranger stating that she was good to go. That she wanted to help. That her injury wouldn't hold her, or anyone else, back. So, when the rest of the team had managed to change the captain's mind, (Y/n) had been delighted, being the first to make her way to the Quinjet. But the last thing that any of them would have expected, was that they would nearly lose her.

"Well? How is she?" Steve enquired solemnly, as he looked at Bruce and Strange. The ex-neurosurgeon having appeared, once he had heard about the extent of the head injuries that (Y/n) had incurred. Not one of the team liking the look on either doctor's face.

"It............it............"

"I must advise you all, that it doesn't look good." Stephen interrupted, Bruce. Strange sensing that Banner was struggling with the news about his friend, as much as he was sure that the rest of the team would be doing.

"There is a cerebral edema that has increased intercranial pressure. (Y/n) will need an operation called a decompressive craniectomy, to relieve that pressure. If not, the swelling could prevent blood from flowing to the brain or not allow other liquids to leave the brain. The first instance, depriving her brain of the oxygen it needs. The second, increasing the pressure further inside the cranium. Both of which can result in brain damage or even death." Strange explained in his usual matter of fact way. His typical cold nature and tone, not endearing the doctor to anyone at that moment.

"And what does that all mean in layman's terms?" Bucky huffed. Not liking that the doctor seemed to be talking about his friend, as if she were a piece of meat. That she was some thing that didn't matter.

"What it means, is that they will have to remove part of (Y/n)'s skull. That will relieve the pressure that is building up inside her cranium. Once they have done that..........well I am afraid that the rest is up to her. We will make sure that she is looked after. That she has everything that she needs. But a full recovery will be down to her." Bruce explained. Getting the sense that Strange's form of a bedside manner, was not really working here.

"Do what you have to do. I want the best doctor to do the operation. The best. I don't care how much its gonna cost. (Y/n) is one of us. She is family. And we want her back at the compound. We want her home." Tony said. The billionaire feeling as much to blame for the ranger's current state, as anyone. His hand reaching up and grabbing the one that Nat had just placed on his shoulder. The billionaire squeezing the Widows fingers, tight.

"You know we will, Tony. Only the best. But I would suggest that you guys go and get some rest. You aren't going to help (Y/n) if you're dead on your feet." Bruce agreed. The team reluctantly making their way out of the room. Each one of them placing a small kiss to (Y/n) colourless cheek, as they passed. Until only Tony, Steve, Bucky and Sam were left in the room.

"See you soon, sweetheart." Tony said softly into (Y/n)'s ear, as he finally convinced his legs to move. The billionaire knowing that as soon as he could, he would return to make sure that she was still fighting.

"We........we're sorry, doll." Bucky said. His voice barely above a whisper. The other two men thankful that he had been able to say what they couldn't.

"We, should have.........we should have been watching you.........." The Winter Soldier added. Doing his best to fight back the tears that were threatening to fall. All three of the remaining men, already having lost too many important people I their lives, to want to lose another one.

"She knows, Buck. And (Y/n)'s a fighter. If anyone can come through this, its her." Steve tried to assure. The captain not sure whether he was trying to convince Bucky and Sam of that, or just himself.

"Steve's right. You know how stubborn she is. Rangers lead the way, and (Y/n) is no exception to that rule. We all know that she is the kind of girl that would stand in front of the grim reaper, and spit in his eye, before telling him to bring it on. She will be back with us before we know it." Sam said, as he made his way over to kiss her cheek.

"Now, I don't know about you two, but I need a large drink. Maybe even two. And I think that we should have a couple for (Y/n) too." Sam continued, as he made his way through the door. The two old soldiers reluctantly following behind. Both hoping that Sam was right.

                                                              >>---------------------------------<<

(Y/n) scrunched up her eyes, as a bright dappled light hit her face. The last thing that she could remember, was that she was racing between tumbled down buildings. Doing her best to avoid the bullets and explosions, as she had dropped into a shallow foxhole. It had been cold, The sound of battle, deafening. Yet now, there was a warm breeze that was gently kissing her cheeks. The smell of flowers and grass filling her senses. The air, peaceful and still, apart from what sounded like a babbling brook somewhere nearby. The whole feeling, in complete contrast to the one she had just been in.

Slowly, she opened her eye. The former ranger finding herself not in a war zone, but in a beautiful little glade. Sweet, green grass beneath her, and a large old oak tree at her back. She had never seen a place like this before. A place that appeared too perfect for words. For a second, she thought that she may be dead. That this was what her form of heaven looked like. But as she looked down at herself, checking her form for extra holes and other injuries, only to find none. (Y/n) theorised that perhaps she had been knocked unconscious by one of the explosions. And that this was in fact, just some kind of lucid dream. And in reality, one of the others had got her back to the Quinjet, and they were all speeding home.

It was then she saw it. (Y/n) rubbing her eyes in disbelief, as through the leafy glade, hopping over some steppingstones across the brook, appeared a very, very large, gruff looking green rabbit. (Y/n) quickly clamping her hand over her mouth to stop herself from laughing out loud, as she realised that the rabbit looked every inch like Hulk, apart from a pair of long ears, and a fluffy green tail. The Hulkbbit suddenly stopping and looking at a large watch which it had just pulled from the pocket of a tattered waistcoat.

"LATE!" The creature suddenly bellowed, before stomping through the trees. (Y/n) feeling the need to follow the big, green, angry bunny. The ranger knowing that whatever was going on, a Ranger always leads the way.
