The Return of the Plot

20th July 2007:

"Is there any progress?" L asked, almost out of obligation at this point as Kiyo walked out of the kitchen, placing the detective's breakfast on the table in front of him.

"No, but I'll make sure there is," Kiyo replied, before moving to sit down on Watari's seat, her seat.

A flicker of disappointment flashed across his face, a moment of frustration sparking in his mind just as quickly as it extinguished. There was no point, he realized, in trying to control something he could not. There was also no point, he realized, in annoying someone who could control the something he could not. So L had resorted to thrusting himself deeper and deeper into the mysteries of the Kira case and the weird behavior of his suspects.

"It's been fifty days, Ryuzaki," Matsuda almost mumbled, not wanting to cross any line, but not being able to watch his superior go through this torture anymore either, "I think it's about time you let them go. Light is clearly not behind any of these recent killings."

"At least you could let the chief go," Aizawa piped in, clearly disturbed since spending fifty days in such confinement was no joke, "He trusts his son too much and he wants to support him, and I understand that, but for someone his age, someone who has already had a heart attack because of immense stress, this might take a heavy toll on his health."

A thoughtful hum left L's lips as he noticed Soichiro's hair that suddenly seemed more grey, his eyes that seemed more sunken, and his skin that seemed like it had been drained of all its color.

"Mr. Yagami, are you alright?" L almost reluctantly asked, switching on the button that allowed him to directly speak to the man, "There's no reason for you to keep doing this to yourself."

Soichiro remained silent for a moment, trying to process L's words, or trying to formulate sentences before he could speak, "It's been over a month since Kira started killing criminals again, and as far as I am concerned that is all the proof that I need to be sure that my son isn't Kira. So then all that's left is for you to be sure. One way or another, when I get out of here, it will be with my son."

"Wow.. the chief can be pretty stubborn," Matsuda murmured, before being interrupted by the sound of L flipping on another switch.

"Light, how are you feeling right now?"

Just as Soichiro had taken a moment before speaking, Light groaned, remaining silent, before raising his head to face the camera, "I'm okay.." He managed to say, even though it was clear he himself hardly believed in those words, "Ryuzaki, I know that in the time I've been in prison, no new criminals have died.. however, that suggests to me that Kira must be someone who is intimately familiar with my situation and if that's the case-"

"No, Light, the reason criminals have stopped dying, is because you are Kira."

Whatever tired state of mind Light had been in, was clearly shaken out of him as soon as L uttered those words, "No!" He exclaimed, "I'm not Kira! How many times do I have to say it?!"

The sudden loudness of his voice had stunned everyone into silence. It had been fifty days, but Light just didn't seem to break, he just didn't seem to accept the accusation even in the slightest. He was just as determined to deny and defend himself against any claim that said he was Kira, and it momentarily made L feel like there was the slightest possibility that Light was actually innocent.

"This is just cruel," Aizawa said, gaining Kiyo and Matsuda's attention, "I don't care if he is a suspect, Light still has a right to know that criminals are being killed again."

Another switch and another loud click.

"Amane?"

"Yes.."

"Are you okay? You seem tired."

"Is that supposed to be funny?" The girl almost rasped out, "How are you expecting me to look after being tied up and questioned for so many days?"

"Hm, that's true."

"Please, just let me go," She begged, "I want to see Light. Please," A shaky breath left her lips, "Light... Light... light..."

"I'm not sure how much more of this the three of them can take," Matsuda, in a sudden spurt of panic, quickly said. It was beginning to worry him, just how harsh and insensitive L was getting.

"Ryuzaki, you have no reason to keep Light locked up anymore!" Aizawa almost shouted in agreement to Matsuda's words, "Do the right thing and let him go, then we can get the Chief out too. Criminals are still being killed even though Misa and Light haven't had access to any of that information. We know that much already, so what are you waiting for?!"

"Not true.." L spoke, licking up the frosting on his finger that he scooped up from the glass of the ice cream cup Kiyo had placed in front of him earlier that day, "All we really know at this point is that Amane harbors an unnaturally strong devotion for Light Yagami."

"Ryuzaki, I'm sorry, but with all due respect from where I'm standing it's starting to look like you're only doing this because you don't want to admit that you were wrong about Light!"

"Yes, I figured you'd say that."

"Okay, fine! But we do know that Kira killed Lind L. Tailor and those FBI agents, right? As Light said, if Kira could kill under surveillance and without access to information there would have been no need! If they didn't pose a threat to him then why would he bother killing them? Kira doesn't kill without good reason, I've heard you say so yourself on more than one occasion..

It's already been fifty days. There's no point to this anymore. Ryuzaki, it's time to start looking for the real Kira."

L couldn't help but feel like something was incredibly wrong over here. How had Light changed so much so suddenly? Why was he behaving like this? Why was Misa behaving like this? It was almost beginning to seem like she worshiped him as though Light were god itself.

"Aizawa," A stern voice had L pausing in his thoughts, "Do not simply sit and question L's judgment, we owe him that much trust, and do not act like you did something to prove Light's innocence through these fifty days. You also just sat and watched Light through the screen, so do not blame L for being selfish and egoistic, when you took no action against it earlier.

As far as the killings of the Lind L. Tailor and the FBI agents are concerned, you never know what motive Kira had behind killing them. It could have been to save himself, it could have been a statement or a warning of sorts, it could have been a right-out threat. If Light is in fact Kira, he might have just killed them to get out of a situation like this, to make sure someone would give the very reasoning you just gave so that he could be granted freedom.

That being said, the case has come to a standstill because of this confinement. There has been absolutely zero progress in the past fifty days other than the initial two weeks of no deaths, but that has also been compensated for. At this point, I could also only suggest that you release them, not because you think they are innocent, but because that's the only way to make the case move forward."

It wasn't because Light is innocent, L replayed Kiyo's words in his mind, but rather because the case needs to move forward.

"Yes, I understand," L spoke quietly, already conjuring up a plan in his head. Flipping on the switch that connected him to Soichiro, he continued, "Mr. Yagami?"

"Yes," Said man replied, "What is it?"

"Would you be willing to come to headquarters just once? I'd like to discuss my thoughts with you but it must be done in person. However, above all else, I need to talk to you as Light's father."

After what seemed like a moment's contemplation, Soichiro spoke, "Alright. I'll come."

23rd July 2007

Light and Misa had finally arrived back at the Headquarters after that extremely traumatizing execution drama Mr. Yagami and L had put up. As happy as L was that the Chief did not end up dead, it was somewhat disappointing that his two suspects had come out of this whole setup scot-free.

He wasn't going to lose hope though, he had enough of that in the past few days.

His usual morning question of whether or not there was any progress regarding BB had come to a stop, since L figured there was no use in asking it only to be disheartened. If there was any progress Kiyo would obviously inform him first.

So trying his best to pay no mind to the investigation in London, L focused on trying to understand what could have happened here and whether Light was actually controlled by Kira or if this was an elaborate plan to get him out of suspicion. Either way, the not so brilliant idea of being handcuffed to him till the 'real' Kira was caught allowed him to continue his surveillance without actually having to keep Light in his solitary confinement, and for now, as uncomfortable as that was, it would have to do.

-----------------------------------

Light's heart was beating out of his chest.

The very moment he arrived at the hotel headquarters, his eyes had managed to catch a glimpse of Kiyo, and that was more than enough to make him feel like the absolute love-struck teenager that he was.

He could feel heat rush up to his cheeks, and the tips of his ears, and his neck, as his mind suddenly conjured up in front of his eyes the images of all the moments they had shared together, the moments they had shared before he left. He couldn't help but think about the hug they shared, about the kiss they shared, about the words they shared, about the loving gaze she had held him in, the gaze that made him feel like the most incredible person in the world when it fell on him, as she promised him that she would wait.

And when she smiled that smile as he walked into the hotel room, with his long, messy hair swaying everywhere, he saw the crinkles in the skin next to her eyes as they formed little crescent smiles of their own, he saw the wobbling of her bottom lip that told him she was so happy she could cry, he saw her twitching toes that showed him just how much she wanted to run up to him and engulf him in the greatest and warmest hug ever know to mankind, and he felt it once more.

He felt like the most incredible human to have ever existed, as he realized that the most incredible girl in the universe would always be by his side.

However, while Light wanted nothing more than to run up to her and kiss her till he physically couldn't anymore, he couldn't. Not only because of all the eyes on them, but also because of the binding chain that held him back - a physical one, that was attached to his wrist on one end and L's on the other, and a metaphorical one, the suffocating chain called Misa Amane.

"Are you sure this is necessary Ryuzaki?" He hesitantly yet exasperatedly asked.

"This is as difficult for me as it is for you." L simply replied.

But that wasn't enough, was it? Because Misa just had to yap even when her words clearly had no value.

"So is this what you meant by being together twenty-four hours a day with him? Looking at you I never would have guessed.. Are you on that side of the fence Ryuzaki?"

He didn't want to hear her voice. He wanted to hear Kiyo's voice. Why the hell was she not talking?!

"I told you, I'm not doing this because I want to, okay?"

"But Light belongs to me!"

'No I don't!' Light wanted to scream, because he didn't. He didn't belong to Misa Amane, belonged to-

"I don't want to share him with you!"

Was he some sort of rag doll to her? Was she a kid in kindergarten? Light knew she would never say anything like that about him. She would never share him or- or claim him as though he was an inanimate object one could buy.

"If you're with him twenty-four/seven then how are we supposed to go on dates together?!"

Wait- what?! What dates was she talking about?! Better yet, why was she still talking?!

"Oh, you can still go on dates, but it'll have to be the three of us."

"No way! Are you telling me we have to kiss in front of you and stuff?!"

The man was too stunned to speak.

What in the holy moly guacamole fuckity fucking fuc-

"I'm not telling you to do anything but yes, I suppose I would be watching."

"That's so gross! You really are a pervert, aren't you?"

"Light, please make Misa stop talking now."

With pleasure, Ryuzaki, with pleasure.

"Listen, Misa, that's enough! The police have already established that it was you who sent those tapes, so you're lucky to even be here right now. They have every right to keep you in prison-"

"Hah?! How could you even say that Light? In case you forgot, I'm your girlfriend! Don't you trust your own soulmate?!"

"U-uh what do you mean soulmate..?" He questioned, sparing a glance at Kiyo, wanting to make sure she knew that Misa was not his girlfriend, "You're the one who said you fell in love with me at first sight Misa."

"Hahhhh?!" The girl sobbed, "So why would you kiss me if you didn't have feelings for me! You took advantage of me? Huh? Stupid stupid stupid! Stupid stupid stupid stupid!"

Oh, trust me, as Light saw Kiyo nervously fidget with the notepad in her hand, as he realized what he could have had and what he had missed - when I say Light knew how stupid he had been by kissing Misa, he knew how stupid he had been by kissing Misa.

This book is literally leaping at this point, it ain't even jumping. We've gone from 10k to 12k between three chapters, and I simply cannot express how grateful I am.

I read through a few previous chapters of this book, and saw the notes of 250 views, 750 views, 4k views I had left, and I can honestly still feel how excited I was when I reached those marks.

I can officially say that I am proud of myself for having the courage to post the first chapter, and I cannot thank you enough for all the kind comments you have left, for all the votes you have left. It means so much to me, I cannot even begin to tell you.

We aren't that close, but we are getting to the end of the book, I'd say fifteen or sixteen more chapters at the most - It could be more or less depending on how much drama and detail I decide to throw in, but yeah, I can see the end of this book coming closer and I can't help but be so damn happy.

Not only because this is every first of mine (My first book, my first death note fanfiction, my first fanfiction ever, my first piece of work on Wattpad - the Naruto book is what I uploaded first, but I've been writing this since even before that) but also because each one of you guys has been there with me through this journey and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I love you all to the furthest parallel universe and back ♥♥

P.S.- I haven't replied to all of your comments, but I have read them all! From the pedophile ones to the petitions to ruin Light's life (Is it going to happen.. or is it not....? Hmmmmm.....?). I have also read the ones that call this book a 'masterpiece' and all I want to say to you is - Stawwp  (*////▽////*)
