remus & sirius' room
Remus smiled at Sirius, who was sleeping on their bed peacefully. He kissed his forehead, laying down next to him, feeling something warm on his back.
Blood.
"Sirius- Padfoot, your arm, it's bleeding!", Remus said, shaking him awake. "Moony- what're you doing-"
Sirius paled, staring at his arm. "Remus- it's not-"
Remus waved his wand, his face draining of colour as the wound stitched itself up, Sirius gritting his teeth,
"What happened?", Remus asked dumbly, as realisation dawned upon his face.
"No.", Remus gasped, "You said-"
"Moons-"
"You lied to me.", Remus said, his voice trembling.
"I was trying to- I didn't want to make you feel worse, I promise it doesn't hurt too much.", Sirius said, pressing a hand to his head.
"Who else did I hurt?", Remus said loudly, his voice loud.
"You didn't hurt anyone else!-"
"How am I supposed to believe you?", Remus yelled.
"I'm sorry love, I know-"
"Fuck off, Sirius.", Remus snarled, stalking out of the room, slamming the door.
"Remus? What happened?", James asked, standing up.
"Did I scratch you too? Almost bite you? Maul you?", Remus yelled, turning to him. James blanched, not knowing what to say.
"Remus- what happened?", Lily asked, confused.
"Your husband and my boyfriend lied to me- they said I didn't hurt them but I attacked Sirius.", Remus spat.
"Oh my-"
Remus turned around, ignoring Sirius running after him, slamming the door of the flat, apparating away.
Sirius ran back in the flat, glaring at James, who didn't say anything. "I think we should let him cool down, let him-", Lily started.
"This is your fault.", Sirius spat.
"My fault? How is it my fault?", James asked, surprised.
"If you had just-"
"If I had just what? Healed you? Like I said I should?", James yelled.
"You can't fix everything!", Sirius shouted, throwing his hands in the air. There was a pause, as the two of them stared at each other, breathing heavily.
"Don't fucking talk to me, Potter."
"Like I would, Black."
Silence took over the air. "Sirius-"
Sirius stared at him, hot tears rushing to his face as he swiped at them angrily, storming out of the flat.
"James.", Lily said gently. "I know- I didn't mean it, I just-", James said.
"He hates me. I'll give him some time."
the next day
"Kreacher, are you sure that's exactly what happened?", Regulus prodded.
Kreacher nodded, his whole body trembling, "The Dark Lord made me drink it- I saw it, he had a locket."
"A locket.", Regulus mused, thinking.
"Can you take me there, Kreacher?"
Kreacher nodded. "I need to write a letter, first."
Sirius,
If you're reading this, then I'm probably dead. I want you to know I died doing the right thing. I'm sorry, I know I should come and see you, but I can't. If I did, I wouldn't be able to leave. I'm sorry, Sirius. I love you. You were the best big brother and you always protected me, now it's my turn. I should have come with you that day you left, I would've never gotten the Mark. Maybe we'd be a family. I'll see you again, beyond this world, but hopefully not soon. You deserve a long and happy life.
Regulus Black, your brother
To the Dark Lord,
I know I will be dead before you read this but I want you to know it was I who discovered your secret. I have stolen the real Horcrux and intend to destroy it as soon as I can. I face death in the hope that when you meet your match, you will be mortal once more.
R.A.B
"Kreacher, make sure this gets to my brother."
Regulus read the letter, folding it and setting it on his desk. "Kreacher, I might not come back.", he said hesitantly.
"What do you mean, Mas- Sir?", Kreacher asked raspily. Regulus stared at him, but shook his head. "Never mind, Kreacher. Let's go."
"Mother, the Dark Lord is calling me!", he shouted. "Good boy. I'll see you later? I'll make your favorite.", Walburga said, offering him a rare smile.
"Yeah. See you after.", Regulus said quietly, disapparating with Kreacher.
the cave
Regulus and Kreacher appeared, with a loud crack. Regulus winced, taking a deep breath, before taking a sharp rock, and drawing blood on his hand.
"I'll do it, Master! You have- pure blood, cannot be spilt.", Kreacher groaned.
"What does it matter?", Regulus muttered, as the blood dripped on the rock.
The rocks fell away, and he stepped into the dark cavern, Kreacher following him. The rocks closed, shrouding them in darkness. Regulus shivered, his wet robes clinging to him.
"Am I actually doing this?", he muttered, his heart pounding.
He searched his head for the research he did, wishing he stopped to say goodbye to Sirius. Regulus lit his wand, turning it to the water.
"Inferi.", he whispered, feeling like a little boy again. "Master, we'll turn back.", Kreacher pleaded, but Regulus shook his head.
A boat made its way over to them, slowly. Every second seemed to pass by like an hour, but eventually, reached them. Regulus and Kreacher climbed into the boat, sitting in silence as the boat moved across the murky water.
They stopped at a platform, and Regulus got out, taking a shaky breath as he walked towards the basin, leaning into it. His reflection looked back at him, and he winced.
He looked unhealthy, pale, and bone thin. But also, he looked like his brother. One that he didn't say goodbye to.
Regulus blinked down at the locket in the basin, the one identical to the one in his pocket. It was gold, with the letter S engraved on it.
"Master, the potion- one of us has to drink it, I'll do it."
"No.", Regulus' voice was cold, echoing through the cave, stopping Kreacher in his tracks.
"But-"
"Kreacher, I command you to let me drink it."
There was a goblet, a crystal one, at the edge of the basin, and Regulus knew what he had to do. He picked it up, filling the cup with the liquid, lifting it to his lips.
"Master-"
"Kreacher, you've been an excellent house elf.", Regulus said, tears filling his eyes.
"Thank you, sir, but-"
Regulus took a sip of the potion, tilting it all into his mouth. The taste wasn't bad. He blinked up at Kreacher, opening his mouth to say something.
Pain shot through his body, and he fell to the ground, clutching his stomach.
"Master Regulus-"
His yells echoed through the cave, but he stood up, drinking more and more of the potion. He collapsed to the ground.
"Kreacher- there's one more left, please, pour it in my mouth.", he begged.
"Master-"
"That's an order!"
Memories flashed through Regulus' mind, the Cruciatus, the first person he had to kill, Sirius saving him, Barty breaking his heart.
Regulus managed to stand up, switching the lockets. He handed the real one to Kreacher, wailing in pain.
"GO! Go, Kreacher, don't let anyone find this. Destroy it. Mother can't know, no one can."
"I will, but-"
Regulus couldn't breathe, his chest felt tight, and he felt lightheaded. "GO!"
A crack sounded, and Kreacher was gone.
Water. He needed water. Maybe he could make it, if he drank the water. Regulus mustered his last bit of strength, cupping his hands into the cool water, forgetting about the warning Kreacher gave him.
A cold, dead hand grabbed his wrist, and he screamed. Other hands grabbed him, pulling him under the water, as he struggled and choked. My wand is gone, was his first thought.
Regulus had been holding his breath too long, and without thinking, he took a breath. Water filled his lungs, and he began to struggle as the hands tightened around him. Panic filled his mind, and he couldn't think.
He felt like he was five again and running into Sirius' waiting arms after a nightmare. He choked once more, the cold water filling his lungs. Spots of darkness clouded his vision, and soon, he saw nothing. It was painful, he couldn't breathe, he couldn't think, he couldn't even cry out in pain.
This was the scariest thing he'd ever been through, still continuing his struggle against the undead, his thoughts clouding and slowing down.
This was the end, wasn't it?
His eyes fluttered, closing, and he couldn't feel the hands dragging him down anymore.
later
Sirius stalked into the kitchen, clearly still peeved. "Did Remus come back?", he asked, pointedly ignoring James.
Lily shook her head, biting her lip nervously.
"D'you want something to eat?", James muttered, after a look from Lily.
Sirius ignored him, acting like he didn't hear anything, sitting down at the table.
"Sirius.", James said, louder.
"D'you hear anything?", Sirius asked, turning away from him. Lily sighed, frowning as he poked at his food.
"Eat something, please.", she said quietly. Sirius frowned, but shoveled some food in his mouth.
"Sirius, I'm--"
"Sirius what? Certainly not Sirius Potter, you've made that clear.", Sirius said, clearly still stung. James sighed, wanting to say something. Sirius stood up, storming out of the flat.
He threw his legs over his black motorbike, zooming off.
An owl flew through the open window, dropping the paper inside.
James leaned over, picking it up, his eyes moving from side to side, reading the headline as he took a sip from his tea.
The paper fell from his hands.
