the tunnel
Lily walked into the tunnel, her hair in a tight ponytail. "What happened?", James asked, followed by the other three boys. The aurors sitting at the table were sniffling, and some were crying. Seven chairs were empty.
"Seven aurors were murdered last night. Maria Torres, Aishani Marnin, Lenin Keven, Jackson Tubman, Charles Percy, and Jimena Park.", Dumbledore said, looking out at everyone. Marlene let out a gasp, covering her mouth.
"W-what happened?", Peter stammered. "They were murdered because these aurors were pureblood witches and wizards who were together with muggle borns or half bloods.", he continued.
Murmurs went up, and Lily looked at James, her heart pounding in her chest. James stared at the empty table, his eyes hardened. "You all may leave. There's no mission. If you are not a pureblood, and you are with a pureblood, please be cautious.".
"Mr. Black and Mr. Lupin, may I speak with you?"
back room
"Since no one knows about you two, you are safe. We managed to Obliviate Walburga Black, and I trust Regulus won't tell.", Dumbledore said.
"Everyone in the Order will be grouped into several safe houses, I'll put you two, James, Lily, Emily, and Peter together."
safe house #1- sirius and remus' room
"You okay?", Remus asked, looking concerned, as Sirius stared out of the window. He shook his head, looking at him. "Yeah, you?", he asked, climbing into one of the two small beds.
"You sure?", Remus asked, limping to the other bed. "Just- just scared.", Sirius admitted.
"Yeah. Me too.", Remus sighed.
safe house #1- james and lily's room
"Evans?", James asked quietly, as Lily let out a choked sob. She lifted her tear stained face, looking at James, and then the ring on her finger.
"I can't-", she said, wiping her eyes. "James, I love you so much. You know that, right?"
"I love you too.", James said, kissing her cheek. This only made Lily cry more, tears rolling down her face. "I don't know what I'd do if something happened to you because of me."
"What are you saying?", he whispered. "It's too dangerous. I couldn't- I can't put you or the other boys in danger.", she said, touching his cheek. "Lily, no.", his voice broke. "Please, James. I love you too much to put your life in danger.", she sobbed.
"Lily-",
"I'm sorry.", she said,feeling numb. James headed to the living room couch, furiously wiping at his eyes, leaving Lily alone.
a few minutes later
"James? What happened? Red's crying and she went to Marlene and Dorcas' safe house, and I heard you crying in here.", Sirius said, walking into the room. Peter and Remus followed, their foreheads creased in worry.
"We're- we're done. Lily and I.", James choked out. "Why- what happened?", Remus gasped.
"She said it was too dangerous. That- that she didn't want to put my- our lives at risk."
"Oh, James.", Peter said, sitting down next to him.
a few minutes later
Lily walked back to her and James' room, opening the door. James wasn't there, he was probably in the living room. She flopped down on the bed, sighing as a tear spilled out of her eyes.
that night
Peter Pettigrew woke up to the smell of smoke clogging his lungs. "Emily! Em, wake up, the house is on fire!", he choked out, pulling his shirt over his nose. "What?", Emily coughed, opening her eyes, and widening them at the black smog filling their room.
Peter pulled out his wand, shooting water at the flames, which only made them bigger. Emily ran to the door of their room, opening it. "Come on!", she yelled to Peter. He turned to the hallway, where his friends were staying, and jumped back as a flaming beam fell, knocking him out of the house.
"My friends!", Peter yelled, but the door to the house was stuck.
Aurors began pouring out of their houses, running to the first safe house.
"Remus! Moony, wake up, I think the house is on fire!", Sirius yelled, pulling the blanket over Remus' face.
"What?", Remus coughed, the smoke entering his lungs. "Smoke.", he gasped, his eyes tearing up.", "Okay, we're getting you out first, alright?", Sirius said, his eyes wild. He tore off his shirt, wrapping it around Remus' nose and mouth, like a mask. "You'll ge-get burned.", he said, his lungs burning. "I'll be fine.", Sirius grunted, the flames tickling his back as he ran for the door. He pulled on the knob, the door not coming open, even as he waved his wand.
"The window.", he coughed, running back to Remus. "I love you.", he whispered, opening the window.
"Sirius-", Remus choked out, as Sirius waved his wand, levitating him out of the window, and safely on the ground. "He has a- a condition, smoke isn't supposed to go in his lungs, get him to a hospital!", he yelled, before running back into the burning house.
"James! James, open the door. Prongs!", he yelled, before kicking the door open. Lily was surprisingly asleep, and James was nowhere to be seen.
"What- James?", she muttered, the flames dancing around him. "The bloody house is on fire, where is he?", Sirius yelled, coughing.
"Oh my- James? Sirius! Sirius, wake up!", Lily yelled, as Sirius fell to the ground, his eyes rolling to the back of his head. "Fuck.", she cursed, picking him up. She pulled off her sweater, wrapping it around him, as she ran to the window on the side of her room, levitating Sirius down.
"Lily? Lily, where are you?", a voice called out. "James! I'm coming!", she yelled. A wall of flames blocked the living room, the fire dangerously going higher and higher. Lily didn't hesitate as she ran through, wincing as the fire burned her arms.
"Lily.", James coughed, his eyes red as he practically fell into her arms, soot on his face. "Close your eyes, we're getting out of here.", Lily whispered, struggling as he leaned on her for support. She grabbed him as they ran through the wall of flames, jumping out of the window.
There was complete and utter chaos outside as James and Lily came out of the house, James leaning on her.
James fell on the grass, his head rolling to the side. "James. James, sweetheart, can you hear me?", Lily asked, leaning down next to him. James let out a small cough, smoke coming from the house behind them
"I'm sorry, I tried to get to you guys-", Peter coughed, Emily in tow. "It's okay, Peter. We're all safe, that's what's important."
"Remus?", Lily coughed. Remus looked at her, letting out a whimper of pain, pointing at the throat. "I have your medicine, Mr. Lupin. Don't worry, we'll get the person who did this.", McGonagall said, handing him the potion. Sirius got up, wincing.
"Sit down.", Remus coughed, drinking the potion and grimacing at the taste. "You idiot.", he gasped, nudging Sirius. "You took off your shirt in a burning house? Bloody dumbass."
"Anything for you, love.", Sirius grinned, coughing and looking down at his burned torso.
"You ran through a wall of flames for me.", James coughed. "Of course I did.", Lily said softly.
"I'd die for you, Lily. And- I don't care if I die doing the right thing.", James choked out, his hazel eyes glinting. Lily looked at James, at the soot on his face, his ruffled hair. The determined look on his face as he looked at her.
She put a hand on his cheek, pulling him into her, kissing him. James smiled at her, as she leaned into his shoulder, sniffling. "I'm sorry.", she sobbed.
"Remus, you okay?", Sirius asked, as Remus coughed into his arm. "I'm fine.", Remus whispered, leaning on him tiredly. "Can I sleep on you, fy annwyl?", he coughed.
"Yeah, you can.", Sirius said quietly, as Remus rested his head on his lap. "What does that mean?", he asked softly. "My dear. It's Welsh. Do you like it?", Remus breathed.
"Of course, mon chéri.", Sirius responded in French, coughing into his elbow. Remus closed his eyes, his breathing uneven. Sirius put his hand in Remus' curly brown hair, stroking it softly.
