- VFR (Visual Flight Rules): rules to govern procedures for conducting flight under visual conditions or to indicate weather conditions that are equal to or greater than the minimum VFR requirements used by pilots and controllers to indicate the type of flight plan.

- IFR (Instrument Flight Rules): rules to govern the procedures for conducting instrument flight and also used by pilots and controllers to indicate type of flight plan. ICAO defines IFR as a set of rules to govern the conduct of flight under instrument meteorological conditions.

- VMC (Visual Meteorological Conditions): meteorological conditions expressed in terms of visibility, distance from cloud, and ceiling equal to or better than specified minima. 

- IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions): meteorological conditions expressed in terms of visibility, distance from cloud, and ceiling less than the minima specified for visual meteorological conditions.
